Some additional comments: use 1.5g of Cafiza [buy here: amzn.to/3gYSvaa] powder for the backlashing (CLEAN ME), @solmanJapan has a great suggestion to use the single cup button to program 10-12s (including pre-infusion) to do a clear water backlashing with the blind basket, @Delmar829 suggests putting a drop of dish soap in the drip tray to keep it clean while it's filling up with espresso water. and another cleaning item to keep your countertops clean! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vFXXUIn7GSk.html
Great video! I think I'll take some tips for my own home machine... So my suggestions are really just based on what we do in a cafe and have just become habit even at home. If you're not using the single cup button, program it to run for 10 to 12 seconds (including preinfusion time) and while you're dumping the grinds in your knock box you can press the button to rinse the group head. I'll do this a second time when I'm done using the machine but this time I'll move the handle back and forwards to help rinse the seal. while moving the portaliter backwards and forwards. If you steam milk, fill up a cup with hot water from the machine and let the wand soak for 5 minutes when you're done using the machine to help dislodge any stubborn milk stains. While the wand is soaking, that's usually enough time to clean your jugs, grinder, table and used glasses. I also empty out and clean the drip tray once I'm done for the day because I don't want coffee oils or water to sit in there. At home I just rinse it with water and once a week, wash it with soapy water along with the water container.
I was very interested but also exhausted and fell asleep watching this last night. Thanks for this straightforward video. I have the same cleaning products that were gifted to me by a friend who was moving but I have the cafiza tablets not powder. Glad I already have the good stuff... now to get the filtration system setup!
I was, in fact, going to watch this video and never come back! But you called it out, now I can’t. Now, I’ll have to be back. No, I don’t have other coffee buddies, I am the only weird one in my group. They think I am obsessed. 🙄
Changed the water filter a year ago. It did not taste any different from the day I purchased it. Used an other than Breville filter. For your drip tray after cleaning. Put a shot of dish soap on each side where the water enters. It will help cleaning the next time. Thank you for taking the time to do these videos. They are great.
@@GadgetsGearCoffee I left the 2 shots of dish soap in the drip pan and left it there after cleaning.. It helped keep it keep cleaner for the next cleanup. Thank you of the good work.

Hi there, great video thanks. I got some great pointers from you, thanks heaps. One thing I learnt from my mother when she worked in a cafe.. use a glass of water and dip the spout in like frothing the milk. Does a great clean after every cuppa after a wipe. Takes a few seconds and you'll see cloudy water.
that's a great idea for the in between cleaning of the tip (I usually do the cafiza soak bi-weekly). Do you exclusively do that and don't do a further deeper cleaning? that could be a good idea for me to replace the cafiza soak for the tip if yes
Very informative! I bought that Breville 920 db machine. I ordered a bottomless portafilter holder, the cleaning solution you recommended, and the pallo brush you showed. thanks a lot!
Did you get the same bottomless portafilter I have on my channel? I love that thing, makes things so premium with the wood. I have some BDB videos on my list of videos, specifically for light roasts and channeling if you're into that. If you're subscribed stay tuned!
Great videos, just found your channel - lot of people use food grade citric acid as a descaler, alot cheaper than the premade stuff (which is mainly citric acid anyways!)
I have heard this. You can also use it to clean your dentures and retainers. All the information kind of comes together when you start searching on the internet! Haven't bought any yet but this is such good information I figured I would give your comment a bump by putting a bunch of words here
Hi Jess, just got myself the Sage dual boiler, very happy with it. The only thing is the single basket which seems to need more coffee (10-12 gr) than the Italian standard (+- 7 gr.) Many thanks for your informative review !
Have you had to descale your baby yet? Your videos on this machine are SUPER informative. Would really love to see a video of how you descale. Thanks 🥰
I have not and I'm actively avoiding it, i read its not great for it, it is a pretty invasive process after all, so I've been buying the filters and got a new filter from LARQ that's supposed to soften the water
@@GadgetsGearCoffee I’m so close to purchasing this machine but am afraid of the descaling process. Wow it’s amazing that you’ve gone that long without having to do it! It’s probably due to all of the preventative measures you do. You really have the BEST informative videos! Tnx 🥰
@@mireya762002 aww thank you :) much appreciated, I'm just a big geek that gets a kick out of sharing the info. It would take a few years to descale anyway I think (depends on your tap water hardness), I've had it for only 1 year
@@GadgetsGearCoffee Hey Jess, thanks for the great content! Just discovered your channel. Anyway, I just sold my DB after 2 years of ownership and I never once had the descale notification pop up. I did maintain my machine really well and my water is quite soft to begin with ( live in Vancouver). I would also advise staying away from doing it if you don't have to, read some forums, sometimes the machine isn't too happy after the process. Also, in regards to the gasket, I actually never had to change mine, I think a big part of that reason is I never leave my portafilter locked in while the machine is not in use, it just sits on the drip tray until I turn it on. No point squeezing it down for no reason!
Hello Ms. Jess: Thank you for the AWESOME content as always. Coincidentally, if not all the time your topic feeds my curiosity and content needs. We have been using the same machine since May this year. So, your content timing is really perfect. Thank you so much for your content and for making our espresso making life easier which means more time to enjoy every cup.
Awww thank you for the kind words! Keeps me going I'm helping folks out there and hearing back from the community :) any other topics you find helpful or you're following just coffee? PS splurged on an Uber expensive grinder that'll be coming in the fall so stay tuned
BTW, I’ve had my BDB for about 5 months and it has not indicated descale yet either. A couple of weeks ago I had to send it in because of a steam leak. All indications are that to his happened because I had not yet descaled. Bottom line is that I will descale every 2 months now that I have it back in working order. Thought this could be useful to those out there who like me (and you) were waiting for the machine to tell me to descale. Don’t wait and end up without your machine for a couple of weeks like me!
I've had my machine for nearly over 1 year, maybe 2 now? I honestly can't keep track, never descaled, absolutely fine. I have been using the filter that's recommended with it that's supposed to soften the water - maybe your water is super hard because descaling regularly isn't good for the machine and prevention is key.
Love your video's And your personality. I have a Breville Pro, right now.I hope to buy the Dual Boiler, although there seems to be a lot of breakdown of this machine.I probably have to wait till Spring to purchase, as I don't like to use credit cards.Furthermore it depends at the shop where I bought the Breville Pro .weather They would take a trade in.I still think it is a great machine. Thanks Jess ,Greetings HR.
thanks for the kind words Herman! I've had mine 2 years and it's all good for now, 2 years isn't a long time so it remains to be seen how it'll fair and how "easy" it'll be to fix on my own
just got my BDB and already concerned because I read about sediments settling in the Steam Boiler and the water getting absolutely disgusting over time as pure water is extracted when I steam milk, leaving the gunk behind. have you had trouble with this? I assume simply draining some water through the tap every now and then would fix this, since the spout feeds off the steam boiler?
Had a dual boiler for about 1 year now. Finally ran into some issue. Steam and water for the epresso shot is no longer cpming out. But the hot water tip still comes out. Im stumped. Not sure whats going on
Hi Jess, can I use dish soap to wash my basket and portafilter? Cafiza is kinda pricey in my area since it’s limited 😢 I’m using Delonghi Dedica btw. Thank you for the awesome content. I’ve been watching your video for a year now and I’m learning a lot 😂
You can try but it won't do the same. Check my links in the description to see if it's cheaper. The bottle will last you forever cuz a little goes a long way
Hey! That's a harder one to answer. I don't know if breville has a recommendation in their manual, it would depend on your water hardness and all. I believe the filter has a 3 month dial ring on it off memory so change every 3 months ish. I sort of stretch mine out, the water in my area isn't that hard
Hey Jess, if you were to invest in a prosumer machine what would it be? I want to buy the Breville Dual Boiler since it everything I would want in a espresso machine but afraid of it's durability / longevity. I'm considering the Lelit Elizabeth v3 but not too sure... Do you have any advice?
I'm biased cuz I have the Breville Dual Boiler, I made a review on my channel ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Key1oQah3DA.html Also, Lance Hedrick made one on his channel and he loves his machine and he's an actual coffee pro. If you want value and features, BDB is the way to go.
Hey Jess, you've probably already seen this but have a look through this thread for a whole world of BDB modification options and maintenance advice. www.home-barista.com/espresso-machines/breville-dual-boiler-mods-and-maintenance-t61421.html One of the big ones there is not to use the descale function at all - quite a few cases of the steam boiler cooking itself during the process and burning out a thermal fuse mounted deep down in the bowels of the machine. Only a $5 part to replace, but involves pretty major surgery to get in to change it. Best option is to use quality soft water - either tap through a filter or via making up batches from de-mineralised/distilled water and measured addition of your own (non scale-forming carbonate) minerals. Cheers
I have seen that thanks for sharing :) I've gone through that list several times since getting the machine but get overwhelmed and confused by the content. A forum might not be the best way to display that information clearly unfortunately. I did not know about the descale! I haven't had to use it so far and am planning on using my LARQ filter once I get that but I suspect at some point I will need to run a descale at some point because even soft water will have some sort of scale build up with time + heat + use (I assume?)
