Another great video! Wifey's Italian and figures that clove of garlic has to be sliced thinner... Me... Being from Russian/ German & Irish lineage, I can tell you potatoes are the best replacement for a shortage of meat. High Carbs give that filling factor. And we both figure a bay leaf or two in that stew & you could open a restaurant... LOL! Look forward to the next vid!
Tips and tricks for corned beef. Step 1 remove the paper it gets in the way of the key while your winding it. Step 2 place the unopened can on a stable hard surface. Use the heel of your knife or the tip if you are incredibly gentle and put a small hole in the opposite side of the can that your opening so air can get in. Step 3 open the can I prefer to twist towards where the tab is attached to the can. Step 4 once the lid is removed use your knife or if you're at home a butter knife, to gently scrape along the sides of the can the whole you made should allow air to get in and release all of the meet at the same time. I like to do this because it makes it easier to slice for sandwiches chilling the can in the fridge or cooler also helps with keeping it solid. Hope it helps. I'm going to try making this stew tonight.
Canned corn beef is one of my guilty pleasures and this is a nice simple recipe for the woods. Dad got paid at the end of the month so mom would cook it when the budget go tight. We kids loved it because it was something different...it came from a can! Trust me when every thing you eat was farm fresh something like this made in Brazil was welcomed. One of my favorite recipes is to sauté some onions and garlic, thinly sliced cabbage, ketchup, toss in the beef and simmer. Serve on a bed of Jasmine rice with my pepper sauce of choice...umm ummm good!
Corned Beef Hash was one of my favourite meals made by my grandmother when I was growing up. My mother made a broadly similar dish called Corned Beef Stovies, which was essentially fried onions and corned beef, topped with potatoes and some sausage or maybe a bit of leftover meat from Sunday dinner and boiled. (This will no doubt cause an argument as grew up near Glasgow, and it varies quite a bit between families as well as regionally throughout Scotland). Gran/ Mum's dishes were completely different to each other. The Stovies was more varied in meat content... Basically a potato based stew, with some degree of meat that changed on family budget on a weekly basis.
Reminds me of having supper at Grandmother's sometimes back in the day towards the end of the month we would have canned corned beef in scrambled eggs and any left overs for supper.
Used to dehydrate my vegetables and have a pack of each vegetable then try to figure out what I could make with that veg if out for more than 2 days. If you are putting in the miles corned beef is a good thing, The low fat things like tuna don't replenish your energy when you're burning through it. Paprika with beef, it is not too much for those that don't like much spice but it'll keep those that do happy too.
Another great video Blackie!! Thanks for the sharing. Love me some mustard and corned beef sandwiches, but am sure the stew is awesome 👌 also, if you let the can cornedbeef get good and cold first you can get it out in one big chunk and slice it. Again Thanks for sharing. Have a good week young man. Blessings to you and the Mrs's.
Looks like another winner Blackie, Thanks again. I'm wondering if maybe you could use beef bouillon cubes and water instead of the liquid broth, in case you want to save packing space 🤔 👍
Blackie , Great Video and Outstanding Recipe , Thanks for Sharing . You are making our time in woods and in the bush better . I have been in deer camp , one guy served Black eye peas and sweet pickle relish for all three meals when he cooked . That is why I didn't mind being the camp cook . Thanks for sharing your time and knowledge . Yes You Are The Master Woodman and Buschcrafter. You teach us in a way to make sure we understand , I have seen some instructors that talked down to their students . I never did do that . Thanks . Tim L.
Another fine video Brother ! Me for my camp cooking chores , I have found that a Mora Knife works very well they are inexpensive, sharp, and clean easily ! Stay safe !
Looking tasty, Blackie! Of course, I love me some corned beef. I like to take the label off before I work my key I find it gives me less guff. Thanks for sharing.
true i though about putting the onion and pepper and garlic in butter and pan fri it a bit them at the end add the corned beef and blend it all together
I always learn something from your videos... Good idea about adding the beef at the end... I'm gonna incorporate that idea in my home cooking ... I know what you mean about tasting the individual ingredients. All the best, and thanks 👍
Awesome video Brother! Quick off the topic question. Is there a particular first aid kit you recommend or better yet is there a Blood Clot product you recommend to carry in your kit?
Years ago I remember being in charge of a nice beef stew my wife prepared. I was off that day & she was at work, so I started cooking things during the day. I also had a cold & my taste buds were a little off 😂, I found the stew a bit bland & spiced it up a couple of times. I liked that stew but my wife & the father-in-law said it was over done spicy 🥵
Blackie, surely you have many knives. It seems that the WCSK may not have been the best tool for this video. No offense to you or Mr. Collins, who makes magnificent knives. Would you have preferred any other knife (Opinel, SAK, Kephart)? Also, where did you get your twisted fork/spoon? Thank you. BTW, when Ginger moved the tripod, she also temporarily disconnected my wifi. Talented cat.
Fact of etiquette... When eating among "civilized" folks or fine dining it is normally considered rude to add any salt or pepper or any seasonings to a meal before having at least tasted the dishes. Your supposed to have faith in the chef that it is already seasoned optimally... and then i pour hotsauce all over it. ^_^
Great idea Blackie, thank you. I never thought of using corned beef in stew. What size is the bush pot you used to make this ? Looks like it would good size for my wife and myself.
One man in his sixties is spending part of his Saturday night watching another man in his sixties slice potatoes. Do we know how to have a good time, or what? :) I really want to get one of those old Coleman stoven, do you recommend running a flame diffuser under your pots?
@@BLACKIETHOMAS It's one of those old items that most don't associate with it being old or they think of the Insapot or canning. I thought it was the the late 1940s and both my mother and grandmother used one. Found out that it goes back to the early 1800s in much the style of the Afgan one that is for the campfre. Humor author Patrick F McManus said it was his favorite pan for camp and he would pepper corn even venison and then use his small pressure cooker.
One of my dishes that I do is chicken a la king with a can of real chicken both from the dollar store and chicken instant rice in the green bag Another dish I do is chili no beans with beans whatever you want there's market Street 1 lb precooked chili one can of ham chopped up and again instant rice Spanish from the dollar store cheap easy dinners or lunches But if you like the salt the sodium bomb you can go with the plane can of chicken with top ramen or the pork top ramen in the can of pork government can giveaways of pork or beef works well in either any of these dishes too
Alright Blackie I got two questions for you. First off how many people do you think you can feed with that dish. The second one after use your knife to butcher stop stuff made cut stuff that's unsuitable for food how do you sterilize that knife in the field to make it or you can use it all food even if the food draw like fruit.
this pot would feed 3 adults who were hungery or too big men... as to the knife i used hot water a canteen cup of boiling water and a little scrub pad i carry for such tasks
Sorry but I have to disagree. Having had my jaw wired shut on three different occasions I can tell you that if you put that in a blender and I drank it through a straw I would be able to tell what was in it. I have blended spaghetti and meatballs with a Coke, cheese steak french fries and a Cherry Coke, pizza and root beer. You can taste each individual ingredient. That said, my jaws aren't wired now and I would definitely devour that chow!
