In this video you'll see how I made my own Cat door and installed it in a door on my house. It's a pretty easy and inexpensive way to give your Cats a way in and out of the house. I can haz Cat dorz?
We cut our door hole and then put a used truck mud flap over it when our cabin was finally finished a few years back! Worked great! I didn't much like the nekkid lady on the flap, so we got another set that said Keep on Truckin'! The new ones were more flexible and a bit thinner, too but by using both, we were able to keep the wind and snow out, and the cat didn't seem to mind, as long as she could get to her voles, shrews and mice! :-D Living in Alaska is a DIY heaven, and of course, everything has to be about the Weather! Good job!
Thank you for posting this. I probably have all the parts to make this in my collection of odds and ends. I wouldn't put this in my house door because it doesn't seal air leaks but it will work in my workshop door so that the outdoor cats can get out of the weather.
I must say, Better lucky than good! I have watched plenty of your videos, honestly couldn't believe hackin' the cat door in and the door hinges lined up just fine. I never could get away with that. Great videos! you could probably build something outta' nothing! thanks multi-talent
Some guy on I think instructables, made a RFID cat door which kept out other animals. He mounted solenoids at the bottom of the door on each side and the extended pins kept the door closed. He make the antenna out of wire wrapped all around the door.
nice work. I would be concerned though about possible pinch in case the cat got spooked and tried to back in from half way out. A good rounded edge trim might help prevent scuffs.
Once you buy the screws, plexi glass, and hinge it would probably equal a ready make door from a pet supplier that has locking features and a molding frame.
See... now I am here and it makes more sense for me, because I just have a really really cheap hollow door that leads to my attic bedroom and I just need a way for my cats to get in and out while my door stays closed. No need for security as if this was going to be an exterior door application. But it seems it would make more sense to just buy a real one for that. From a safety and practical standpoint.
Ok, first of all... nice hack! Seems to work well. Secondly, what respectably J-FET named cat living in a House-Of-Hack doesn't have a RFID chip in his neck, commanding all cat doorz and food/water bowlz and cat toyzzzz??? Third... hollow core door, cold winter and burglars don't mix ;-)
Dude, spend the $30 on an actual cat door that looks professional and clean. It’s WAY easier and looks WAY better. You actually changed the entire door! This is crazy. I can’t believe all the awesome comments. This is totally inefficient and looks like a hack job. Sorry, not wanting to be mean.
c'mon it looked great ..what if he lives in the back end of nowhere, has loads of time to kill and odd bits and pieces then why should he spend 30 dollars on some ready made one if he can do what he has shown.....
You called it a hack job...you obviously can't read. In the video he clearly wrote "Life hacks for your cat". The time & $ spent was offset by him having a good time doing it himself. You're a sad sap.
you should dummy fit new/used door before you take time and effort into cutting pet door before u begin...what if it does not fit for some #@&*%:"?$# reason...then your screwed.
