Simple DIY Nesting Boxes for Chicken Coop | Homestead DIY Projects

We transformed an old shed into a temporary chicken coop for our young chickens and ducks. They'll live comfortably in there while finish the new fancy coop. The timing is working against us a bit and the feathered ladies are at the age where they should be starting to lay eggs. So Emma spent some time in the shop putting together some nice nesting boxes the chickens can lay in should they feel so inclined. It was a fun, easy and quick project that only required a piece of plywood, screws and some handy dandy tools. Hope you enjoy it.
Measurements/dimensions:
Each of the sections is 12"x12"12" so altogether the width is approx 36", height 12", depth 12". Feel free to post a comment or question below.

Little tip, next time you are sawing a piece of plywood or OSB board, once you start your cut about 6" in slip another small piece of any kind of scrap under the plywood it will hold up the part you cut so you do not have to try to hold it and injure yourself or pinch the saw. Nice job.

Thirteen Moons Homestead It’s taken us years to get it to this point and we still have more work to do in it. But we love having it and being able to build the things we need on the homestead.

I made the mistake of not having enough boxes when my 14 new hens began to lay...ooops I'm now finding eggs in strange places, I did not expect to relive my childhood Easters like Groundhog Day the movie lol It's been a mad rush furnishing milk crates and ambitiously building a roll-away style nesting box...I hope these ladies take well to the new boxes. Great channel I will be watching, thank you

CitizenXRP They have, thanks. All but the ducks lay eggs in them. If you have trouble finding enough milk crates, dish bins work well too. We’re building new nesting boxes for the new coop. Pretty exciting.

cody larson It’s a typical size of plywood, 4’ x 8’ that I ripped it into 12”x12” dividers, front and top pieces are 6” and full width approx 37-38”.

So that’s probably 3/4 inch plywood. Super amateur question here but what type/size screws would be best for this? I’m building currently but haven’t gotten to the nesting box yet. And Iv never worked with plywood so it’s new to me

I used 1 1/4 inch screws to assemble it.

Each box is 13”x13”x13” so that would make the whole build roughly 39”W x 13”H x 13”D.

Measurements please. I saw 2 at 4inches , and 45 degree cuts . Did I miss the other cuts .

Each box is 12"x12"x12". So the dividers and ends are just over 12" to accommodate for the width of the plywood. So the full width of the nesting box with 3 partitions is roughly 37". Hope that helps.

Hi Chris, I used 3/4 ply and each of the partitions, or nests, are 12"x12". So the the full size would be approx 36" L x 12" H x 12" W.

Hey Josh, thanks for asking! Each box should be around 12”x12”x12”. Maybe an inch or two bigger for larger breeds. But that’s the size I did for my Welsummer and Wyandotte chickens and it works perfectly.

Jessica Vigil Happy to help. Yes, the front and top pieces are each 4”. The box as a whole is approximately 38.25” W x 13.5” H x 13.5” D built with 3/4” plywood. And the angled cuts are at 45 degrees.

You use power tools in a very dangerous manner! Besides potentially damaging the wood and making it unusable...OR...damaging your power tool...using power tools in a haphazard manner can lead to a serious injury. Please be careful...and if you're going to be recording a video of your power tool usage...please use the tool safely to set a good example for those watching!
