Hello Geoff, I missed your video last week. I guess I got pretty use to watching one from D, Àdrock and you each week. I'm glad you're back up and running now. I love how you think out of the box and come up with inexpensive solutions for tools of the trade. I'm sure you're helping others who are looking to get into the hobby or even others who already are.

Thanks Susan. That's what I strive to do. I like to make things accessible to as many people as possible. I don't have a lot of money so I often have to swap finance for a little bit of lateral thinking. I share this in the hope that it does someone else a good turn : )

Next give us a cheap alternative to moulding silicone. The two part pouring silicone is very pricey here. Using caulking silicone, either with cornstarch or with soapy water method is a bit messy. I have not tried the cornstarch method yet. Also thinning caulking silicone with Naptha is smelly and downright bollocks! Thanks for this video. I have been thinking about wax injection for a while and here you come with an easy solution.

I agree the proper stuff isn't cheap. It's the one thing that puts me off Lost Wax casting. I have tried ordinary silicone and baby powder (same sort of thing as corn starch). It's VERY messy but it's not bad. The problem is there's no way of dealing with issues like trapped air. Plus it goes off quite quickly.

Generally, fresh silicone sticks well to cured silicone. This means you can spread cheap caulking silicone into a rough sheet, let it cure and then cut into small bits with scissors. The bits are then used as an aggregate in your pricey two-part catalytic liquid silicone (not putty ). The liquid flows around and between the solid bits, as cement flows around gravel. They'll fill more than 80% of the volume without jeopardising surface detail or flexibility. Oddly, I got that tip from a manufacturer of two part silicone who said never throw away scrap, use it as filler to economise.

Well it's a simple way to get it done and i'm actualy suprised that it worked just fine. But there are some things to keep in mind when injecting wax . 1.wax must be poured fast.why? 3:33 you can see the wax got cold and let a mark where two parts of wax met in will be cast aswell . 2.no traped air. Traped air can be the reason behind so many failed casts simply shine some light behind the wax to see the bubbles. These air bubbles will open up before you cast it and will cause the cast to fail. To avoid this you should cut some lines in the silicone mold to let the air escape. 3.dont use too much baby powder. Baby powder is used to help the fast flow and release easly but if you apply to much you will get a textured model. 4.you get what you see. The wax is the first step in casting meaning anything on the wax model will be cast. So make sure to clean and smooth out as much as you can so you wont need to do it in gold.silver or any metal you work on. If the mold you made has lines or any textures in it simply use lighter fuel on the wax to melt and smooth them out. I hope this could help.

I really want to try this one day, I think I can do wax over pla, as I don't at the moment have anything to burn out pla, wax shouldn't be a problem. Build a small vacuum chamber and get a flask. Should be easy enough. Thanks again for the inspiration.

Burning out PLA is no different to wax, just a little hotter... well, twice as hot. An ordinary kitchen oven will manage it. BUT it still wouldn't help. You need the proper plaster and that HAS to be cooked at 730C to make it properly porous. Save a few pennies and then have a go at a home made electric kiln. It really isn't that tricky. Check out my tutorials on that and don't be afraid to ask if you need any advice : )

Yes you can. Just place a container under the flask and remove as soon as its melted (usually less that 100 C). Filter it and it's good to use again : )

Aaah, baster looks a lot better solution. I've had at least two of the plastic syringes become so brittle from the heating cycles of the wax that they've snapped apart into many shards. Thanks for sharing! :) p.s. the outside of tins get rusty fast lol Use a jam jar instead :)

Hi Geoff, I am trying to cast some small parts for a project and tried this method with a 3d printed 2 part mold ...I used the proper wax and it turned out great!! I did have more luck with a small plastic clear syringe, since the parts are small.! I do have a question should I be concerned about shrinkage with brass or aluminum? What might you suggest I scale my 3d printed mold by? Thank you

Hey vog i bought one of them air wick wax melt pots to warm decals up when i build models... maybe that is hot enough to melt this wax too... just a idea instead of the hob

hello Geoff I have been using your Diy method and been using a wax pot to melt the wax instead of the pot/stove. The wax will melt when I set the wax pot at the highest temp but is it bad that the temp is higher than the recommended wax temperature? What happens if the wax temp is higher than the recommended ?

I want to get started with this but when I shop for injection wax I see all manner of colors, prices etc and I don't know what to buy. In the video you say is "what you do need is proper injection wax. I can't emphasize that enough". But the product you show doesn't appear to be on the market any longer or at least the URL shown on the bag is a dead link. What makes for a "proper injection wax"? Can I buy any ol' junk that says injection wax on the package or is there something special about one or the other? Why are there different colors? Do they have different properties?

Hi Dave. It's very confusing I know. Here's a link of what I'm using these days. www.cousinsuk.com/product/injection-wax-flakes Recommending one is hard because it's a preference. It tends to be about the hardness of the wax. Some folks like soft wax. I prefer hard. For that reason I'm currently using the Purple, but the fact that they sell so many varieties shows you that folks like different things. Wax is very much an art. Ideally you need to try a few and find the one you prefer 😊

hello thank you for this video -- im trying it out now but ive got purple injection wax - it solidifies much too quickly once ive sucked it into the injector. Did I make the wrong choice of wax? I see you have blue wax there. Also, as I am leaving the injector in the tin can whilst the wax melts, it is way too hot to touch once the wax has melted, but that doesnt seem to be a problem for you?

Hi Bonnie. All waxes cool very quickly which is why the injector needs to be kept hot too, so you're doing the right this there. Don't forget to only need the temperature to be just hot enough to keep the wax molten. A thermometer might you there. I fond my injector was hot, but not so hot I couldn't handle it - but where there's no sense there's no feeling 😁 Make sure your temperature is too hot, let everything stand for a good ten minutes so temperatures are consistent throughout, and maybe wear some gloves. Act quickly, practice a few times, and you should get there 😁

I believe so, yes. The real advantage is how clean it burns. It leaves only the tiniest amount of ash behind so castings aren't spoiled by residue etc. Look out for my video next week and you'll see what I mean : )

How does this compare to actual wax injecting machines? I’ve got my own jewellery business and have been using this method. It can take me hours to inject with the syringe before I even get a half use-able piece!

There's no comparison. If you're doing this professionally, you need a professional tool. This method is great for the amateur on a budget, but as you say, often it takes a long time to get the result you're after.

I need some expert advice. In order to have quality, affordable crucible tongs, do I have to make my own? I have looked for weeks and just can't find any good sturdy tongs for pouring. Any suggestions?

I'll be honest, I had the same problem. Eventually I took some sturdy steel and bent it in my vice with both hand and hammer. The end results were exactly what I needed - trying to buy that off the shelf is tricky : )

Hi vog, why the insistance on the "proper" wax. Shrinkage? I've messed with candle wax and jam sealing wax and they shrink a lot. Is that why?

Hi Ray. You sound like me, a guy that likes to experiment. I'm not one for taking the expensive option when cheap or free works just as well. But I've also experimented with candlewax, sprue wax and carving wax. None of them came out very well. I was convinced the fault lay with my syringe set up, but when I found a fairly large bag of injection wax was only £20, I took a punt. I couldn't believe that it worked brilliantly. Since then, I stick with injection wax for injecting : )

@@vogman I just had another idea. Sorry that they're often as unwanted as bouts of flatulence, but here goes. You mentioned that string might be a problem using flames to heat the wax. Try some wire or wire mesh affixed to the can, and just place it on top of your saucepan whenever you want to melt something. It'll take up more storage space, but is likely to be more convenient to use. Don't cut a hole in your wife's screen colander unless you have already gotten her a new one. 😉
