Finally, someone who is as chaotic as me when it comes to understanding this stuff. I’ve been watching tons of slick patchbay tutorials and whilst kind of getting it hasn’t been working for me. Now I understand the inputs/outputs! I was reading it as out to out on the front as well as in to in on the front, now I realise all the diagrams I’ve been looking at quite clearly show it as in to out at the back before you start cabling. Mayor difference! So hopefully, later today I can sort it all after staring blankly at my gear for weeks.

Dude, this is by far the most useful patch bay vid I've come across. Top job!

I think what would help people to get their heads around patch bays would just be to see them as a big collection of extension chords. It just extends all of your ins outs from some hidden back area to one centralized location.

I've had studios in England and Berlin, starting in the mid '80's. AND I STILL STRUGGLE WITH PATCHBAYS!!! I know the theory, but somehow I still end up on the floor, tracing cables, and muttering incoherently. Thank you, I feel (slightly) less of a total failure of a Human Being now.

Hands down the best explanation of a patch bay I’ve come across and this is going to come in useful for me this weekend when I set mine up for the first time

Oh holy poop, velcroing one of these onto my pedalboard would be a game changer.

Definitely a great introduction - particularly for guitarists as the application of the patchbay with effects pedals is very relatable - great work! 🤘

Finally a hands on patchbay video. I was starting to feel like a complete ding dong...a total moron you see, I just couldn't wrap my head around it. Just had to see it actually being done and connected. Beasters buster! Thanks and take care.

Brilliant. I've been looking for a video to explain patch-bay routing in an easy to understand way. I've had a Behringer unit for two or three months but never hooked it up because I couldn't wrap my brain around it.

MX1 Send/Return tip: You can change if the sends are pre or post fader in the system settings (hold Gain while restarting). I believe it's one of the four lit steps on the sequencer at the top. If you set it to post fader, you won't get the ghosting from the returns when muting a channel.

thanks for the “down to earth” explanation. i am/was scared about so many possibilies. patchbays should make the work easier with less cables, but it seems like the cables just stick now somewhere else and make it just easier to reach… well now i got time for sound experiments;-)

tip. you'd be better off using straight jacks as apposed to angled ones. wont clutter up you wires as much

Behringer patchbays are configurable , Normal, Thru, Half normal Modes. In a studio patchbays are you best friends. I use half normal mode for insert points.

This is where old school mixers excelled, multiple sends and bus outs to run your effects and other outboard. Patch bays are great though for flexibility, it's the additional wiring round the back that puts me off! I cheated and got an old Yamaha 02R, six aux sends and two built in effects units which are perfectly useable. Mine cost £265 with an extra 8 inputs (so 32 total) and meter bridge - £8k back in the day, got to be the best value kit I've bought by a mile :-) Is the quality as good as a modern digital mixer? Not on paper no. Can 999 people out of 1000 tell the difference? Certainly not. Another bonus is the ability to have noise gates on every channel, perfect for my spaghetti wiring! Yet another bonus is it's built like a tank, only downside is that it weighs about as much as a tank.

Left Mono haha....that certainly is a bargain. Sounds like a great piece of kit. I have to admit I like gear that is heavy...you know it won't break and it makes it feel more expensive! Lol

Rezzonator - it certainly feels solid, you wouldn't want to carry it to gigs! Anyway, thanks for putting your work on Apple Music - commute home much more enjoyable with some 303 goodness on the stereo :-))

agreed, putting auxs in a sub menu is mental and a deal breaker for me.

Nice explanation..i was too thinkin that out goes to in and vice versa, like midi, so it seems that a good way to remember the routing, is the opposite of midi....Keep up man..!!

You shook should chain all the pedals on the back in stead. Then you don't have to patch your chain all the time but you can still change it if you want.

Thanks a lot. Is your patchbay made of balanced jacks or unballanced? Does it make any differenc to you when connecting line level signals? Cheers!

Great video thanks. Often wondered how patchbays worked! Think one might be on my shopping list now. I just can't get on with the MX-1 send/return. And I see you are using the Digital channel of the MX-1 now :)

Excellent video. Just one question though if you had a synth that was stereo like minilogue and you wanted to patch it into one of the mono pedals would you only get the pedal through the left mono Channel on the input chain on the minilogue? Hope that makes sense
