How to make the Simple Lacy Shell Stitch. This one is lacy and airy.
If you already know how to make the chain, the single crochet, double crochet and slip stitch, you should be able to make this stitch pattern.
Chain a multiple of 6 plus 3 chains. Sc across chain.
First row of shells: Ch 3, turn. Skip 3 sc, make a shell of (3 dc, ch2, 3dc) in the next stitch. *skip 5 sc, make a shell in the next sc. repeat from * across row. End with a dc in the last sc.
Second shell row: Chain 3, turn. Shell in the chain space of the first shell,* skip space between shells, shell in ch-sp of next shell. Repeat from * across row. Dc in the top of the turning chain.
Repeat second shell row to desired length.

Beth thanks for the great tutorial. I've been following your tutorials for several months. As a beginning crochetier, I 've learned quite a lot from your videos and can say that I've mastered the V-stitch thanks to your videos. Now I'd like to try the new shell stitch and will follow along.

thanks again Beth for the tutorials. I've been following your videos and can say that I learned how to crochet just by watching them and been crocheting for about 6months. you're right you only show a stitch but I've applied the videos to the patterns for the scarves which I've made. currently working on a shawl for my mom using the V-stitch which is very easy even for a beginner.

I would place long stitches between the shells and short stitches on top of the shells divided by chains. I would have to make something with the shell stitch to work it out.

@mustlovepink14 No. you have to make the chain a multiple of 6 chains, then 3 more. In other words, make your chain counting six chains at a time until it's the width you want, then add 3 chains.

Oh wow Bethintx your a great teacher. I think I can do this stitch as well. The way you do the shell stitch is the best one yet. I've been wanting to learn this stitch for a while. I love this stitch! I want to make a triangular shawl out of it but dunno how to do it in a triangle? Can you help?
@Bethintx1
@Bethintx1 11 лет назад
You end off you yarn and join your yarn to the foundation chain and work the stitch pattern into the the other end of your scarf for a couple of rows.
@Bethintx1
@Bethintx1 12 лет назад
@red123828 You would have to find a similar pattern and look at that. I'm just showing how to do the stitch here. I have no idea how much you would need for a blanket.

Now I'm trying to figure out how to increase to do the front and the sleeves will need to decrease. I'll have a go. :) thanks again
@Bethintx1
@Bethintx1 13 лет назад
@eamccune Well, you would have to make a chain of 5 to start. Then sc in the chain space in the top of the shell. then chain 3, sc in the next shell. do this across the row. end with a double crochet in the last stitch. Then single crochet across that. I'm writing this from memory , so forgive me if it's a little off.

Hiya! i've finished an entire afghan and have come to the last row where i would like to finish the edge at the end to look like the other end (the row of double crochet) but for some reason cannot seem to figure out how to do that, I think working into the shells is where my brain refuses to continue to work.. Any help?
@Bethintx1
@Bethintx1 10 лет назад
I turn the piece around and work the shells in the foundation chain for a couple of rows, or for something like a scarf work half of the scarf, then work the second half in the foundation chain.

@Bethintx1

+Jaye Ramirez I usually leave it scalloped. To scallop each end, I turn the piece around and follow the pattern on the beginning edge.

@LockeyGirl This video demonstrates a stitch not a pattern for a complete object. I frogged it out after making the video. Some folks made scarves and blankets using this stitch. Perhaps if you Google an image search for simple lacy shell stitch you may see some things made using it.

@Bethintx1
@Bethintx1 8 лет назад
+Stephanie Johnson Make a chain the width you want for the curtain. Count those chains. Add enough to make them a multiple of 6. then add 3 more chains. Be sure to use something very light weight like crochet thread. Also use a hook size that is recommended on the label.

This is a wonderful stitch !!! how would you increase and decrease with this stitche ??
@Bethintx1
@Bethintx1 10 лет назад
There are several ways it could be done and it would depend on how much you would want to increase it. I have seen patterns that add chain stitches between shells, and others add stitches to the shells. Or add a V stitch (dc, ch2, dc) between shells then shell in the v-stitch. To decrease, I would guess you can use dc decreases in the shells. You would have to play with it.

can i use this as a blanket?
@Bethintx1
@Bethintx1 10 лет назад
The multiples are in the description below the video. How many chains you make depends on the size hook you use, the size yarn you use, and your tension. Make your chain the width you want your blanket, use any number of chains as long as it is divisible by 6, then add 3 more chains.

I'd like to have a squared off ending rather than scalloped. What are you saying? I'm a newbie too. Does end off your yarn mean you cut your yarn? Where is the foundation chain found on the scalloped row? I searched Stitch Pattern - but results are for cross stitch, knitting or embrodriery. A video might be of some help with this. Thanks!

I would end off the color at the end of a row, then join the new color where you ended off the old one.

Sorry. I thought you wanted a scalloped ending. Yes. end off means cut your yarn. I do not have the pattern written down as to how to square off the ends. You would chain 4, then sc in the ch space of the shell, then ch 2, and tr in the place where the two shells come together, ch 2, and repeat across.
