Lovely classic looking mantle. Very nice work. It’s so shallow though. Obviously the client wants it like that but you could barely rest a cup of tea on that.
That’s perfect exactly what I need for my fireplace that has been bare since I built the house! Sometimes those little jobs are thee most profitable jobs! I know it’s for a friend? So charge him double not triple?
at least 8/10, perhaps higher. I'd like to see the top portion of the mantle be about 30-50% thicker. I think it look more balanced. I could be wrong, perhaps only 1 inch thick is appropriate. But I'd do a couple mock-ups to see.
Thanks Mate, i tried a larger overhang and the top was a little thicker but i reduced it a bit which improved it, but its all personal preference isnt it. alot depends on the location its going
You’re spoiling us with all your latest videos Ollie! Thank you so much for taking the time to video what you do and share it with us. Great teaching as always and very much appreciated. Keep up the fantastic carpentry you share with us!👍👍
Cheers mate, It gets tricky at times, with money constraints, time constraints, and even finding the thing im working on a bit of a chore, but i try me best. The feedback really helps motivate to do more!
10/10 of course, and the same for the filming and voice over. Thanks for sharing what you do - it's inspiring and encourages me to film my own very simple efforts rather than hide them! Great to hear you recognise the beauty of your own work - quite right too.
Hi Ollie. Just after a bit of info. I’m looking but a power feeder for my spindle moulder. I have a Hammer B3 combo, and want to machine up a lot of t and g v groove boards for a few projects I have coming up. Would you have a recommendation. Also I see they have adjustable speeds which I’m guessing is for feed rate. How do you work out what is the best speed for the timber/profile you are cutting? And expert advice would be appreciated. All the best!👍👍
HI Mate, id avoid scott and sergeant, call jmj woodworking they were really helpful for me recently and im sure will advise you correctly. . Rule of thumb start slow and speed it up basically.
I like the mantle and give it an obvious 10/10. I do often roll my eyes when your friend/colleague/etc says to you 'ah, you do a bit of _{insert your job/hobby here}_ do you think you could make me...?' or my friends favourite way who brings me a picture of something he's seen on Pinterest and says 'I reckon that you could make this'. Thanks for the video Ollie
Nice. A simple 3 plank 🤔 project executed by a perfectionist.. Loving the post. Would appreciate the 'whys'. For example tulip wood: why (I know the answer here, but timber species is a dark art); the cupping - you stated a preference, but why. Gosh without even those 2 points I have taken away so much from that post alone. Same with every post. Reckon you are in the top 1 joinery manufacturers on RU-vid and your work is so fine. All those tools - you have somebody like me who doesn't have all those tools - feeling like wow, because even if I had all those tools it wouldn't help me. You know how to use those tools to craft with, not just 'anybody can do this if they have these tools'. They can't.
Great job - thanks for posting Ollie. What would your advice be to your humble audience who may not have a spindle moulder? How we can we make decent detail cornices or trimmings without one? Router table? What (if any) are the limitations? Thanks again
I know you know what you're doing , but for christ sake get some gaurds or pressure clamps on your work piece on the spindle moulder before you lose a finger or worse . It will happen one day it always does. I speak from experience I was lucky and only lost a tiny bit from the end of my thumb but I've seen far worse.
Very nice, disappointing your mate did not enquire into your three week finishing process. Good mates are great at knowing how to get people to ‘help’ them
Beautiful work as always! Concerning the planer, I don't think it's a spark plug since the Felders are long known to be diesels... You could however check the drive belt for the feed rollers. Looks like your machine has a long rubber belt that drives the feed rollers off the main motor. It's engaged by the lever next to the height adjustment. When left engaged while the machine isn't being used, the belt can be stretched into that specific shape and become lumpy, much like a bandsaw blade can take on the shape of the wheels if you leave it tensioned without running the machine. Not sure if this is the case but maybe it helps 👍
haha thanks mate, its the drive wheel, they are a common problem and the worst bit fot he machine tbh. it digs little bumps in the rubber drive wheel then bounces every time round.
"Just three pieces of wood" is the equivalent of what I get: "It won't take you long" or "Is that your best price"!? Lovely work as usual mate and yes, I for one would like to see the install.
Yes, Im afraid you guys probably keep the best stuff. Although, the whiter poplar like these bits are incredibly hard and dense. It can vary between purple, dark green and almost white.
So that dodgy sparkplug is the drive wheel for the thicknesser. It's not too hard to get off. When you have it out, just sand the worn spot smooth on the disc sander or edge sander & you'll be good to go.
Yeah thats the one, the back panel is off the planer, seemingly, whenever i sand it smooth the next day it digs another hole in it, but then it doesnt happen again until i sand it smooth haha. So its been left for a while until im enthusiastic enough again!
@@BradshawJoinery That's interesting. I had to do it a couple of times myself on mine, but that was over a period of 12 years, so not too bad at all. Clearly you must be working that machine harder than i did! 😆 Will see how long the new machine goes without needing to do it, as i'm sure it will be the same system.
@@brycecomerwoodworks haha to be fair I've only done it 3 times, 😂 it's usually when you put a really grippy bit of wood through that's tapered, so it stops on the bar, and the feed roller bites into it 😫. Not very often! I bought a replacement once it was about £100. My mate spent a shed load with Felder and they only charged him about £20 for the same part
@@BradshawJoinery yes mate, you know who I am! I was getting a bit political telling Fauci what I’m going to do to him if my kid gets sick with his poison. So I thought I’d make it slightly harder for his shit security to track me down 😜 ( still your mate down under 😂)
Just a joke haha, There is a rubberised drive wheel in these that is a common problem, when a lump of timber stops going through, it eats a chunk out the drive wheel and causes the knocking sound, hence sounding so horrible.
@@BradshawJoinery I'm an appreciate cabinet maker in Denmark, but unfortunately my Danish isn't great. Besides your videos, do you recommend any resources/books that I can look at to get more info on machines and uncommon aspects of wood working? Thanks!
thanks mate, plain but with some subtle beautiful detail, its being painted in with the walls, all the same so should look great. everyones taste is different though, thanks for watching
