In this video I make a key holder from a piece of scrap oak flooring and some bolts.
For this build, you'll need:
- scrap of wood
- 4 no. bolts - you can use more or less depending on your needs
- table saw / circular saw / mitre saw / hand saw - if you need to cut your piece of wood down to size at the start
- disc sander / belt sander / random orbital sander / sand paper
- drill press / hand drill
- beeswax / mineral oil finish / finish of your choice
- tape measure / ruler and pencil
I started by planing and sanding all sides of the scrap to smooth the faces and remove the finish, and the grooves that are a part of the floor boards. I then laid out where I was going to drill the holes to receive the bolts, spacing them out evenly. After planing and sanding, the piece of wood measured roughly 210mm by 40mm, and was 15mm thick. 210mm divided by 5 gave the spacing for the holes, making them 42mm apart. It's worth checking that this offers a comfortable spacing for your keys. I used a drill press to drill 6mm holes so that they would be square to the face of the wood and tapped the holes to thread them for the bolts. I made the holes slightly undersized so that the bolts would fit tightly. I then screwed the bolts into the holes using an alan key and a square to make sure that they went in straight. The piece was finished with a 50 / 50 mix of beeswax and mineral oil.
