hi JP! would you be able to tell me how deep you cut the notches on the shelves so they mount on the other hole? I could totally use this hack because I need to make my shelves narrower and this sounds perfect!!! you might have just solved my problem, thank you! 🤯 0:50
@jp_makes
@jp_makes 4 месяца назад
Hi, glad the video is of help. As you look at the shelf from above, it is already notched 15mm. If you extend this so the total notch is around 42/43mm then it should fit comfortably on the next set of pins. Good luck!

Can you add some more detail about the jig you made to drill the holes for the top of the door? I'm assuming you used that for the bottom pivot pin as well? How did you determine how deep to drill the top and bottom holes?
@jp_makes
@jp_makes Год назад
Hi, yes the same jig was used for the tops and bottoms of both doors. The jig is just a piece of wood that has been drilled out on a drill press to ensure the hole is perpendicular. That piece of wood then has two more pieces screwed onto it so that they sandwich the door with sort of U shape, and the hole ends up centred on the door thickness. This makes it easier to drill perfectly straight into the door. The minimum drill depth was 30mm based on the kit instructions (but it's ok to drill a bit deeper for extra clearance) - an except is in the video at the top right at 3:57. It might be different depending on which kit you buy so check the instructions that comes with yours.

Nice looking table ? what type of plywood did you use Thanks, I am make an end grain desk for my Daughter but was going with the strip only no bottom sheet like you did MY table top is like 24"X 5ft thickness like 1 1/2"
@jp_makes
@jp_makes Год назад
Thanks! It was my first time trying this out so I just used construction grade plywood. If I was to do this again and for a cleaner result and no voids in the plywood, I'd use a nicer furniture grade birch plywood. Best of luck with your build!

I like when videos keep the mistakes and the ‘less than perfect’ I’m a total beginner and some of these ‘make a simple bedside table’ videos RU-vid suggests to me seem to be more about having £250k of specialist equipment and 20+ years experience, and less about just trying to bring an idea come to life. Also totally love how it looks without the plinth, very sleek and modern.

If you're planning on making a bifold door like in this video then you shouldn't need any soft close hinges.

Curious, if you did this with sandpaper to finish the exterior, how would you do it? Some type of stain for color then a seal? How many hours to make also?
@jp_makes
@jp_makes 2 года назад
The piece was sanded on the lathe and then a final hand sanding. The colour and finish was achieved with a 50/50 mineral oil and beeswax blend. I can't really remember how long it took to make this, it was quite a while back. Thanks for watching

Maybe, depends on the type of kit you buy. Or you could buy two kits and have two doors on either side to make for a total of four panels?

This gave me hope that it's possible with low-cost materials... THANK YOUUU! 3:13 Why not use 3 hinges to connect it though? It'd be nice if the joint-like connector is sandwiched in between the two glued plywood so that it won't be too visible, but I guess it leaves a gap?
@jp_makes
@jp_makes 3 года назад
Thanks for your comment! I preferred the aesthetic of one continuous piano hinge, and when the door is open you don't see the gaps between three separate hinges this way. If you tried to put the hinge between the plywood layers, the hinge would not function as the two leaves would hit each other. I hope what I'm saying makes sense? Thanks for watching. ☺

Nice job! Is the hinge completely visible on the other side? If so, that kind of defeats the purpose of having such a minimalist and architecturally interesting door.
@jp_makes
@jp_makes 3 года назад
That's a fair comment if you dislike hinges. I used a continuous piano hinge top to bottom and I like the aesthetic but that's just my opinion! Thanks for watching. ☺

Thanks! ☺ I've previously used polyurethane, same as the plywood, and on another recent build the beeswax and mineral oil I also use on some wooden items. However this one I left unfinished and it looks the same as it did the day I made it and its over a year ago now.

Just softwood plywood, it would have been nicer to use furniture grade plywood but I didn't want to spend more on it. The plywood I bought was only £35/sheet
@11JackBenny
@11JackBenny 4 года назад
How thick plywood strips and what type and thickness of wood did you glue them to for the drawer front.
@jp_makes
@jp_makes 4 года назад
From memory the plywood strips were about 9-10mm thick, but it isn't critical, just need to be thick enough that they don't bend and warp too much whilst you're trying to glue them to the panel afterwards. The drawer front is 18mm thick plywood that the strips are glued to, so overall quite a thick drawer front. It could be a lot thinner, you could get away with 12mm, but I bought an 18mm full sheet to make the piece so just used that.

@jp_makes
@jp_makes 4 года назад
Thanks! The plywood is 18mm thick. I didn't include dimensions on this build because it's made to fit that particular wall, so it might not make sense to replicate it exactly as is. The overall width is 1550mm, depth 500mm, height 450mm + 55mm plinth. Each of the eight shelves are 365mm wide, 192mm high.
