Simple Photography Hack For Getting The Perfect Exposure With ISO.
Get my "11 Days to Better Photography" free mini-video course right here froknowsphoto.c...
Lets be honest here, if I called this video how to get the proper exposure no one would click on it. Because I know this is solid info I used the words Photography Hack in the title which hopefully gets people in the door.
Welcome to "3 Shots Or Less" where my goal is to get the perfect exposure in only 3 shots. This time around I did it in only two and had to raise my ISO to let more light in. I could have changed the shutter speed but decided I only wanted to change one thing which ended up being ISO.

@cammac444

In certain situations... An example would be if your using flash in the shade on a brightly lite day. The background is blown out by the sun. but you have to light your subject with flash without darkening them and to balance out the background... You could use a flash technique called high speed sync to darken the background light your subject and balance the exposure. But you would lose lots of distance from flash in order to get that to work. The easyer solution in this kind of a situation would be to use a 2 or 3 stop Nd filter as opposed to high speed sync. High speed sync is a more advanced technique but sometimes its better to keep it simple. Espeshaly in the world of photography. Also use an Nd filter when you find yourself closing your apeture passed f11 and use it for longer exposures durning the day for creative effects.

1/125 1600 iso f 3.5 is around the right exposure, but he is not moving, so we could improve image quality: 1/60 and iso 800, however for ultimate image quality best is to take 3-4 pics with these setting: 1/30 iso 400, and if he is posing still, I guarantee 1 out of the 4 shots will be perfectly sharp, and 400 iso is 4x cleaner than 1600, - Im talking from own experience, and It works for me. Try it out. - ps: leave iso on auto ALL the time, so you will know what the possible image quality will be BEFORE taking the picture, and if iso is too high, lower speed (or open aperture if possible) Hope this helps! :)

Hey Jared, thank you for this series, I pretty much watched it in one go. It helped me immensly to understand what is going on and how I can control the situation. Your instructions and explanations are very clear, they also give me a tool / structure to figure out the correct settings without fumbling around too much... And yes, often the auto-functions do a good enough job, but your tips help me to gain control for those situations, where the auto-functions do not do what I expect, which immensly decreases my frustration-level! I also want to mention that your examples underline your explanations pretty good, as well as the displayed ISO / aperture / shutter-values. Thank you!

For understanding the triangle: F stop - lower = more light. Higher = less light. (think of it as a wider lens letting in more light, the higher the number) Shutter speed - lower = more light and motion blur. Higher = less light and moving subjects become stills/have less motion blur. ISO - Lower = lower light sensitivity and less noise. Higher = greater sensitivity and more noise

Jared you should do a video on understanding the histogram. I was amazed how useful it is when I learned about the spread of information.
@falcon048

The thing about shutter speed. If you lower the shutter speed because the subject isn't moving, doesn't negate the photographer moving, breathing, etc. My wife studied photography long before the DSLR cameras came to market. For her, a shutter speed of 1/60 is more than capable in any shooting scenario, but I find that on a DSLR, that can be too long to keep the shutter open if you're looking for sharpness. Bumping up the ISO looks great in smaller pictures, but when you begin to blow it up, you can see the colored-noise present in even the most shallow shadows. Even in the 2nd picture you took, you can already see the grain on the hand to the right.

Classic case study would be either landscape or subject in shadow with a bright sky. The easy out for a great camera is shoot with highlight metering and pull shadows up in Lightroom. But if the disparity is too great, it can still be tough to make look natural.

I'd like to see how to better interpret the scene with the histogram. In bright daylight looking at the image on the back of the LCD isn't practical. I have a loupe but shooting on the fly requires I look at the histogram and make a decision. Love to see more ins and outs of that.

I forgot how to set it up, but in A Priority Mode, you can set the ISO to be Auto 100 if it can be, and bump up if needed on Nikons. Been using that as I learn (still a noob) but I think it works well for outdoor shoots. Indoors, you are better at going either with P or S Mode at that point, in my noob opinion.

Hi Jared, What if I need to to get my exposure right the first time. For an example, I'm shooting a subject that is not there yet. How do I do that?
@oleggontar2942
@oleggontar2942 7 лет назад
I would like jst to argue with a word. Raising the ISO doesn't actually makes your sensor more sensitive. Still for the same amount of light the pixels will have the very same amount of charge. ISO just sets the amplification before digitizing the analogue signal. This is why higher ISO has more noise, as the charge on the sensor is low. (from that aspect shadow noise and this is close to each others all based on that the real signal is low and the noise level is comparable to that. Obviously it is a tutorial, where terminology is still not that important, but i like to argue.

Nice. I knew I could control the exposure with just ISO values in manual mode, although never tried it really. You inspired me to try it on the new d5600, and it looks like I can have better exposure that what Nikon suggests. But the use of this method is very limited I think. Probably good for staged portraits... The light constantly changes especially outside.

A Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200MM F/4-5.6G ED VR II. A Nikon DIGITAL fit 28mm macro wide lens. A Nikon DIGITAL fit 400mm 800mm 1200mm. Keep up the good work. I'll be watching. Thanks

As far as I can tell all current DSLRs from the major manufacturers have the capability of shooting at some ridiculously high ISOs. How do we determine what an acceptable ISO is when we need to use higher ISOs to get our exposure right? (personal preference, some unstated "rule of thumb")
@JG-bh9rz
@JG-bh9rz 7 лет назад
Shoot as high as you need to without going crazy, the higher the iso you can go without unbearable noise depends on your camera, and its sensor size, generally full frame is better than a crop-sensor, but a new crop-sensor like the d500 would beat an older full frame. Too high iso for your camera and you'll start seeing green and purple pixels and it will start to go a bit mushy, but before then you'll notice increases in noise and graininess. That bit is personal preference since some people don't like the look of ISOs above 1600 while some don't mind going up to 25'600. A tip is if you go to a higher iso and it looks bad, try the image in black and white as sometimes it looks a lot better.

OH muh man im sorry you lost it. This episode was about: 1) sp=1/125; f=3.5 This mean 2 things, sp is correct for a handheld camera and the f-stop is max aperture for a kit lens. 2) YOU have to choose, long exposure (handheld) more ligth using the f-stop (you cant cus kit lens) OR 3) YOU HAVE to rely on the ISO. DUH

You won't see stars everywhere, you need to be away from towns or cities otherwise the sky becomes orange from all the ambient light from light pollution. Once you get to a good location, use a tripod, set your lens to the widest aperture (lowest number it goes) set your iso between 1600-3200 and use a long exposure time between 15-30secs
@JerseySteve1

@tosvus
@tosvus 7 лет назад
Let me get this straight, you are trying to get a subject somewhat close, with a nice starry sky in the background? You will need to run at a very slow shutter speed (use Tripod!) and a large f-stop to keep as much as possible in focus. ISO needs to be adjusted accordingly. You may want to take multiple shots at different exposure and combine them on the computer. If you only want to take a picture of stars, nothing in the foreground, Josh has great advice. Just note that if you have to focus manually, don't set it to infinity (people tend to think stars are so far away, you should focus as far away as possible, but that is wrong - you actually have to pull focus back a bit)

See it here: images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41JhEjj6RcL.jpg It's the button on the left, closest to the the screen. The little flower icon button. As for RAW, you're shit out of luck. Inferior point-and-shoots don't have it. You're gonna have to upgrade to a superior DSLR camera with interchangeable lenses.

why not just look at your meter??
@froknowsphoto

i've explained this 37 times in the past 3 shots or less. It's about getting you to understand the exposure triangle by seeing what's happening and understanding the meter may not always be right.

+Sam Adams - Your meter doesn't know if you want motion blur, blurred background, etc. The meter checks for exposure, not artistic desires. Only you know what you are trying to achieve artistically.

+Jason Bone - Well obviously if you want any sort of image blur, you would not look at your meter and instead compensate for this manually. However, if you have a still subject (in the case above) then simply looking at your meter would do just fine.

but how would anyone know how to get the blur if all they did was look at the meter. That's the point of these videos, LEARN THE EXPOSURE TRIANGLE.

I literally just had this last night when taking pictures of the sunset after midwest flood. My meter said it was properly exposed, but it was way underexposed. The reason: Glare. It was after a flood. The road was wet, the grass was wet. The sun was going down behind a building. Everything was reflective, which is what i wanted,. So I ignored the meter and dialed it in on the next shot. One more to be safe.

I have a question. What are you doing alone in a hotel room with Todd? Not that there's anything wrong with that.
