Replaced a starter on a JD 624 in Fayetteville NC last year had to buy a set of inverted (male) Torx at the local harbor freight. The employee at the register told me if I ever break one to bring the whole set back. Maybe this is regional or just a new simpler policy.

I have been shopping at Harborfreight for over 20 years and when I was a mechanic for Bobcat, I priced three angle wrenches for hydraulic fittings with Snapon, and they were $300.00. I purchased the Harborfreight complete set for $39.00 I have them to this day!

These induction coils are usually only used in places where a open flame is bad, like hydraulic hose fittings, injection lines and fuel line screws, nothing replaces the oxy gas torch except maybe the oxy lance

I found sometimes you can take a torch and blow the bolt out without hurting the threads because of the mass of the frame. Melts the bolt but does't hurt the frame threads. Works great.

Just a hint. Nuts are not the same as bolts. The induction heater works better on nuts as it expands them off of the bolt. Heating the bolt causes it to swell in the plate. Of course a molten bolt will come out! 😄
@bobblundell2281
@bobblundell2281 7 месяцев назад
The little coils you use for that tool are small induction coil and to work properly they need a gap around the part, the more times you heat the steel it changes the property of the steel especially when you add the penetrant oil . we use to use induction coil on a larger scale but still work on the same principal. Heating the frame more may have worked better, we only heated bolt heads if lock tight was applied.

Maybe not so much at harbour frieght , butttt LOWES REFUSED to exchange my ratchet. I was Givin a set of kobalt 3/8 socket set. I went to go exchange the ratchet & the STORE MGR preceeded to argue with me about returning the entire 3/8 drive socket/ratchet set. I told him I didn't have issue with the set , just the ratchet. He said bring the set & lowes will be happy to exchange. That's just crazy.... Great videos gentlemen. Plz keep em comin

the ductive heater is designed for nuts stuck on threads not bolts stuck in threaded hole, for bolts stuck in threaded hole i heat the metal around the bolt then cool just the bolt , normally works
@PaulFrancisAAA

Exactly.... You're trying to expand the "hole" while keeping the bolt cool (and thus relatively the same size).
@robertnilsen3452

I agree. You should have heated the metal the bolt was in. I've been working on autos, trucks and heavy equipment for over 45 years. The only time I need to heat the bolt, was to get rid of Red Loc Tight, first. Bob

If you have a bolt that is stuck , you can easily remove it by heating it red hot then quince it with water until it’s cold . It will come out very easily , works every time . I have used that trick for 30 years. You keep up the great work.

You should have used a rose bud tip on the oxy acetylene torch and got the rail red hot. I worked o a lot of Turf Eq back in the 70's and it would work almost every time 😀

To loosen a nut -- heat up the nut & it will expand. To loosen a blot -- heat up the area where the bolt goes into or freeze the bolt. Heating the bolt will cause it to expand & get tighter.
@russellsmith3825
@russellsmith3825 7 месяцев назад
If you heat the bolt, it will expand into the cold bore of the frame, the frame is rigid so the bolt if got enough will compress, but then you need to let the bolt cool completely to get a couple thousandths clearance for penetrating oil to soak in.

I remember doing that years ago and after many nuts and washers plus many many cuss words and a few beers a buddy of mine said drill the center of the bolt and weld another nut on and I joke you not that bolt came out. We had the rail red hot at one time and it still wouldn’t come out until the center had that hole drilled in it. As far as the Harbor Freight deal on what others are saying I have had zero issues returning or warranty on anything I have purchased.

Heating bolts works because the hot metal expands. With no place to go, it elongates, compresses, or stretches the parent metal. As it cools, it is smaller than the original diameter. Let them cool as much as practical.

In order to get the bolt loose after heating it you must allow it to cool completely or heat the steel in goes into . Heating only the bolt will only tighten it until it shrinks from cooling. Any metal will expand with heat by cooling it the metal will shrink. You can see this on metal shaping .

You could try freezing the nut, with dry ice to shrink the threaded section. I used this idea on railroad traction motor flange bolts. Dry ice will freeze it down to minus 60 degrees C. And shrink the bolt a few thou. But you need to do this on every bolt before putting on the impact wrench. And before heating them as heating will soften the high tensile steel of the bolts. You need to make up a soda can with one end cut off, put metholated spirts in the can so you can have the head of the bolt immersed in the meths. Put the dry ice in the meths till it stops giving off vapour. In case you dont know what metholated spirits its just pure wood alcohol. I held the can with welding gloves. Give it at least ten minutes of soaking time. This method will keep the strength of the bolt.

I don’t have near the experience as you guys but when I worked on my 450c I had quite a few bolts break off. I kept welding on nuts and they kept breaking off flush. So I built up the bolt till it stuck up then welded the nut. That worked better. I also drilled a whole in a 1/4 piece of strap then welded it and tapped it back and forth with a hammer. Finally got them all out.

To undo really tight bolts we used 3/4 in drive breaker bar which was home made.We used a piece of 1 inch 4130 steel about 4 feet long and bent it 3 inches from the end with oxy to get 90 deg.Then filed the 3/4 drive onto it..This has the effect of removing any flex which makes a big difference.And yes still use heat.

Heat the part the bolt goes into, also air hammer around it, helps to break that stuff up a bit. And for those induction heaters, I use them for o2 sensors. The coil doesn't touch the fastener, it's not supposed to. Hence, the induction part of the induction heater.

If at all possible and you are not trying to save the bolt, cut off the excess threads. No need to try and run that extra thread back through the hole. Works well for long bolts with boggered threads or coated with paint. Had to do that many times when working in the oil refineries.
