@@honeybadgermerriemonarch2388 yes but as long as you know the meaning behind it. As long as non natives don't claim it as their own culture it's not cultural appropriation.
I'm a non-Native mom to three Native girls that need regalia for the powwow their school district puts on every year (I guess next year, since everything went to hell). We don't live near my husband's family anymore, so I have no one close by to teach me how - your video is SO helpful, thank you!
The best advice I ever got: tack down ribbon with craft glue sticks instead of pins. So much easier to sew and the lines end up cleaner for me. I use the kind that washes out with water, it works great and comes out nicely just with hand washing.
I just made my first ribbon skirt following this tutorial, almost cried tears of joy when i turned it inside out and it was finished! Thank you so much for sharing your easy ways! You should totally do an applique video! Much love :)
I just ❤️ your tutorial. Very practical and real, you dont skip a step that’s rad. I’ve made 14 skirts with your help! I enjoy your video so much I play it over and over when i’m up late night skirt creating. Youre good company lol 😉. The most useful advice for me was widening the bottom and sewing the sides of elastic to deter rolling. 👍👍
Thank you Chelsey! I didnt realize how many sisters dont have anyone to make them a ribbon skirt. I’ve made ladies their first ever.... such a blessing. It wouldnt have been even 1/2 as successful without you girl!! Best RU-vid channel i could ever come across
I've actually been wanting to make ribbon skirts for all my 4 older sisters but I never knew how to start, but your video really helped me get an actual idea lol I love your Wolf design by the way
I tried to go by my grandmother’s patterns for our regalia. This was so much simpler and less stressful. Thank you for a great video. I haven’t made any new ribbon skirts in years. They turned out great.
I had to watch 4 different videos just to get to this one, and i wished i had watched it sooner. I could not understand how to do the waist band! Great job! Skirt looks beautiful! Miigwetch!
I've never been good at sewing. But I've watched this video at least twice now, hoping one day I'll find the courage to attempt to sew my first ribbon skirt 😅
It is soooo pretty! Thank you so much for doing this video, getting ready to make my first ribbon skirts for a friend, and I’m going to use your method! Wonderful! Love it!!
Thank you for this. Reconnecting native here and my 9 yr old niece is learning all we didn’t. I’m obsessed with making our own tribal clothing. This helps so much
Such a great video! Really gave a lot of great information! The skirt looks amazing and has really good flow at the bottom. I can't wait to start on my own!
I don’t have a sewing machine that does that fancy stitching lol what should I do? I’m trying to get into my roots and I absolutely would love to make one piece of regalia for myself and my daughter.
Thank you so much for this video! I am going to be starting my first skirt tomorrow. This will be the first piece I have ever made. Can I ask what type of material is best used for the skirt itself? And would you wash the material first? I assume ones the ribbons are on dry cleaning or hand washing after would be best? Thank you!
Hey Chelsey, in your opinion can non-indig women wear ribbon skirts if they have children with an indig man. I'm wanting to make ribbon skirts for my nieces who are mixed, but I'd also like to make one for their mom. Any suggestions?
I have an unopened package of a spool of ribbon. I don’t want to open it yet but need to know how much it is and all it says is 10800. How many yards or inches is this?
HI, how do you measure the elastic for the waist? I know in this video you wanted it to be 34 inches , but how would you measure , can you explain. thanks
You can cut the bottom and top the same size, so that you’re basically cutting a rectangle. I would advise that you cut at least 55 inches tho so you have enough hem space to walk
Beautiful job! These ribbon skirts are too expensive to buy (believe me, I’ve been searching online for some ribbon skirts for about a year and I have 5 girls in my family), so yeah I’m gonna use most of your techniques 😊. Love the lighter trick -used that trick on the powwow trail many times. Miigwetch
Ann, you may not have had the ribbons well attached to the fabric before you began sewing. Try gluing your ribbon onto the fabric next time. Use a glue stick (cheap option) or “5o5 spray” (pricy option) to hold the ribbons in place before sewing.
@@redwillowcreations6919 thanks for the reply. That may be so now that I look at it I think it was because my zig zag stitches were to tight. Maybe a tension problem as well. Next time I'll use more glue.
If you did not prewash all of your fabric & ribbons they can shrink by different proportions. Prewash everything before you start. Make sure your sewing machine tension is well set & threads lay evenly on both sides of the seam. Don't pull your fabric when sewing. Just let the machine take it.
The hem of a tea length skirt or dress falls between just above the ankle & mid-shin. So-called because that's the dress length ladies would wear to tea in the 1920's.
