Simple Second Grade Curriculum// Charlotte Mason Homeschool// Since I imperfectly try to use Charlotte Mason’s educational philosophy in our homeschool, I try to use a curriculum that follows her methods well. Today, I’m sharing what I use for a simple Second Grade Homeschool Curriculum.
I’m on my third round of second grade so I hope to shed some light on how I keep it simple and delightful while still getting in the essentials each day.
Remember, POINT of a curriculum is to be a guide and a support. It is NOT THE MASTER!

I just discovered your channel and what a blessing! I started homeschooling this year and have figured out we are definitely more charlotte mason than traditional. I love the sweet simplicity of it. We use pentime also and almost thought we were the only ones! Lol. Beast academy sounds fantastic. I need to look into it. Thank you for sharing!

Hi Joy! Thank you for this video. I always enjoy hearing your perspective as a homeschool mom teaching multiple ages. I have five kids, ages 12, 9. 7, 5, and 2. I have recently been feeling the mom guilt creep up because my second grader is not reading "at level". I do see progress and realize that every child is different. However, sometimes I feel pretty down about it. Have you ever had a child that was "behind" in reading? Do you have any practical tips? How do you deal with mom guilt? Thanks!

Hello! I’ve had one child who was slower to read than the others, but I’ve found that kids “are where they are” when it comes to skill work. The mom guilt can kick in and be sneaky. A good thing to do is start with prayer. God gives us wisdom when we ask. Then I usually chat with a mentor, a peer and my husband. That helps me get perspective on if it’s a “big deal” or something to just allow time to work out. And, since I’m a researcher, I may spend time going back to books that talk about child development, the point of education and reasons to chill out. This helps me gain perspective and not put so much pressure on myself and my child. Since we are image-bearers we have language and math abilities in us. Often it takes more time for some than others. This is normal. Be encouraged! Your child will learn to read. Sometimes giving them easy books like Bob books to get their foundation more solid can be helpful- and even taking a month off and starting again. I’m always surprised how much a break can help them move forward. You e got this and your m ie your child!

@@joycherrick Thanks for the encouragement and words of wisdom. Much appreciated! I'm glad that you mentioned prayer because it is TOO easy to forget the most important step. Thank you for taking the time to respond!

Thank you for sharing. How long do the beast academy lessons take? My 3rd grade twins are using teaching textbooks, they do well with online programs but they think the lessons are too long. After mastering a concept they don’t want to have to sit and do 24 problems.

I only use a timer- so they may do two problems in 30 minutes or 15. The reason is bc it’s about problem solving and mastery and not just about getting through content

Hi Joy! Would you use this with a kiddo going into first grade this fall? We used Rhythm of Handwriting from Logic of English this past year and it was okay. I'm having a difficult time finding cursive books for first graders unfortunately. Most start with older kiddos.

Hi Jillian! I don’t start cursive until a child is reading well and has a basic understanding of manuscript letters. For my kids, that seems to be second grade. We use the transitions book from PenTime once they are ready and I really like how simple and clean it is. I’ve had some friends have luck with handwriting without tears! Hope that helps

Your son is such a great artist. My son is in 2nd grade and cannot draw very well. Any tips to improve his artistic ability?

Just lots of time with a pencil and paper. My kids also love to trace pictures. Tracing is a marvelous way for kids to learn how to make things LOOK like what they are. We also love the book How to Draw Almost Everything. It has very simple examples to get gets started drawing.

Love this approach. Can I ask, how do you teach things like how words change when adding a suffix, or using “an” instead of “a” before a noun starting with a vowel? Things like that… I find my kids have not picked this up naturally, especially the phonics rules around how words change etc. Appreciate your insight… I, too, want learning to be simple, enjoyable and organic, if possible…

This depends on the age of your kids. I’m finding that my kids are picking this up naturally. I don’t start grammar I introduction instruction until 4th grade and have seen my 6th grader really Pt attention to proper grammar with her writing!
