There are literally HUNDREDS of quilts you could make using the ideas from this video and charm packs! This video will show you how to do simple sewing techniques to make a variety of blocks which can all be rearranged in many different ways to make so many different designs.
Remember the playground from when you were a kid and all the options you had for fun? That is how I felt about the projects in this video! I could play and play and never get bored! There were so many things to try and I didn't want the fun to end! I will definitely use this same process again to make quilts in the future, maybe even another video combined with more options...we shall see!
I love charm packs! Those cute little bundles of fabric lure me in and make me buy them.
Now I need to start using them before the collection I have overwhelms me! Fortunately there are hundreds of awesome projects that use charm packs to make anything from full sized quilts to baby quilts to bags and more! We will be using charm packs for all of the projects, but leftover fabrics from projects cut into 5" squares will also work! Most of the videos will include a sample made from a charm pack (or two or three or more) AND a sample made from leftovers from other projects.
Make your own charm packs! Cut up your stash and create your own charm packs using fabric you already own. One fat quarter can be cut up to make 12 five inch squares. A third of a yard of fabric can be cut up to make 16 five inch squares. When you finish a project, if you have leftover yardage, cut it into five inch squares and start a pile to use for future projects. Have some fun with your stash of fabrics!

There are times when I end up purchasing one layer cake instead of several charm packs because I know that 4 charms make up one layer cake - and I dint mind the cutting😁.

That 2-ruler trick for the squares is really clever. I’m never confident that 2 1/2” is really the halfway point on a charm square, and with the second ruler you know. Bravo!

I absolutely love watching your videos. You are organized and don't fill your videos with irrelevant rhetoric, but stick to explaining your construction techniques and design thoughts while demonstrating what you are doing. Your voice is calm and pleasant and your speech is not filled with um's, uhh's, so's, etc as so many videos are. I also like that you share links to products you are using and why you are. Another feature I appreciate is your explanation of shortcuts you find useful when constructing your quilts. I'm looking forward to more videos using charm squares. Wonderful job!

I LOVE the series you’ve been doing with precut sized strips and charms. It gives me SO MANY ideas for future projects. And honesty it makes it easier for me to spontaneously buy charm packs since I know I can just add a background in and make something in the future. And that table runner! I have soooo many ideas now. ❤

Great video. Here's my sweat shop (personal) production trimming tip to consider (as I see you are production minded!): when trimming piles of the same block (your HST's) Round 1: trim first two edges from trim pile (pile 1); set aside into pile2) Round 2: Spin pile 2, and then trim remaining. This method (a) allows you to spin your block and your ruler just 2 times (one time for each pile); (b) never change the alignment of your ruler. Your brain and eye will thank you. (particularly true for specialty rulers when the marks are different between rounds such as flying geese)

You could cut your layer cake into 4 charm packs if you want ×4 matching too. Do you have fat quarters to tackle next? Hunks of "cut into" yardage, or do you have left over strips from all your 108" backings? Could you try mega size log cabin quilts, with one block, or only 4? They could filter down into your boxes if you cut them into pre-cut sizes too? If you made some design boards, you could stack up sizes as you go on separate boards. You have "stick to it-ivness". Those sorted 2 1/2" boxes were a huge resource at the start. Well done with taming all of that, it looks much more manageable now, and you will get these charm packs under control too. Do you ever make mug rug and bowl cosy sets out of charm squares, to sell in your shop? How about a 4-patch rug with mini and alt charms for home? Not everyone sews, so many look for gifts. Don't take on too much though. I made a string and black "can get greasy" 1 layer spread with clipped raggy seams, out of gaberdine to put over the bed, so a person with a grotty job can rest before a shower. Without messing up the bed. Somebody has to do those jobs or we all are in trouble. How many cars would die without mechanics? All the best.

Changing the color combinations also makes a big difference in how it looks. Between changing around the components of the block and the colors, there are tons of ways to play around with this! I made one with white background, various dark blue fabrics for the colors in the four-patch units, and various dark reds for the triangles, in a jewel box arrangement (chain goes through the middle, triangles face away from chain, blocks placed so triangles of four blocks meet and make a diamond). I would post photo but can’t figure out how!
