Simple Simon Bend - Simple Simon Bend Over - Simple Simon Bend Under - Double Crossed Simon Bend
Here I will demonstrate three very similar knots, that are a little more secure than the Sheet Bend. The Simple Simon Bend Over, then the Simple Simon Bend Over, and finally, Double Crossed Simon Bend, each more secure than the previous version. These three similar knots make an excellent Sheet Bend Alternative.
These three knots are particularly great when joining slippery and unyielding synthetic ropes.

Nicely done Johnny -simple enough. I've never seen this one before, but it looks simple enough for even me to remember. Now I gotta go find a reason to use it on something. Yeah, you like to talk, but, nowt wrong wi' that. It's not too waffley. Dam. I hate that word "cordage". Dunno why I'm just a word snob, I guess. :)........ No doubt you'll be using it more often now eh?.

Sometimes when doing the videos, I look at the rope cord string etc and really wonder what to call it. I just figure that cordage covers a lot of bases. ;-)

I've done a fair amount of rigging, and I don't believe that I've ever used this. Really appreciate you sharing these videos. Lately, I have been trying to remember knots from back in the day, playing with rope every now and then. Some things come back, others I struggle to remember / recall. Others surprise me, "How did I just do that?" lol = So, thank you again for posting these videos. Your tutorials are very easy to follow.

Sorry for the late reply, only just found this one. Oh I always struggle, sometimes I learn a knot and then it just disappears from my mind. I think I have about 5 knots that I really know and use, that usually covers all the angles.

5 is a good practical number to have on hand. It is fun to jog the old memory = and = fun to follow along with your videos as "pictures" sometimes make me go bonkers ;) I have dyslexia = so it makes learning from pictures / drawings a bit hard to assimilate. Thanks again. ~ matt

One of my favourite knots is the Marlin Spike Hitch: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3r2UjaV8SVg.html this knot turns into so many other knots. I really need to do an updated video on this one, as I have found more knots it will do. Knowing this one gives you an even bigger number of knots that you know.

Mmm, rather you than me!! The other day I watched some tree cutting videos where it all goes wrong. There is sometime a massive amount of weight on the end of those ropes.

Many moons ago, I was a slinger in the Royal Navy. I loved the job, especially when doing a married lift on a really heavy object with two cranes.

When tying the double crossed, If you finish up by going under instead of over it will be even more secure since the load is on the standing end.

Interesting sometimes to tie knots like this in fishing line this one has no chance despite being amazingly good in paracord. I have tried doing fishing knots in paracord too, and one i suggest you try is a Jimmy Albright with only 4 turns it seems super easy and strong. Cheers Johnny

This is so much more compact than fisherman's bend. I was using reef knot for climbing purely because my abseling instructor said it was a great knot for climbing? This knot you showed? Can I use it for tying prusik loops? ( not bulky)? Any reply appreciated cheers from Australia 🤩👍👍👍

I am not sure what you were using the Reef Knot for in a climbing context, but according to Ashley's Book of Knots it is the only knot that has 3 skull and crossbones along side it. It is considered to be only a binding knot. I really can not advise on what knots you should use, maybe consult a good climbing reference book/person?

@@KnottingKnots yeah. I don't use it any more! I was using for prusik loop. Making the join on a prusik, then tying a prusik loop around my climbing rope. I hope I explained that well.

This is an interesting bend... I'm curious if it's stronger than a double sheet bend on a slippery rope. Seems like this might still slip under heavy load?

To be honest I really do not know the answer. I am trying to team up with someone who has a rope tester, then I will be able to compare knots against each other.

I was thinking the same thing, is the the double sheet bend stronger? Instinctively I lean toward the sheet bend, because I know it's solid. Something about the way the wraps are spread across the bight, my mind sees those gaps and thinks how nature abhors a vacuum and I subconsciously imagine slip. Imagination and instinct don't make it so. Eventually I will test the double simple simon in the field and see.

Just found your vids... as a budding knotter, this is great stuff. Quick question, I'd like to know where you got your marlin spike, in particular, the (looks like) brass one which you've put a wrapping around (not shown in this vid) -- I already have the folding one. Thanks for the great content!

I have to say that I find it rather odd that there is very little information out there on the strength of knots. I did however once write a blog post on some of the knots that had been tested: igkt-solent.co.uk/knot-strength-chart/ hope this helps in some way.

I always say "you are the master of your own knots", so to answer your question, this may be better as it is less prone to shake loose. I use the sheet bend a lot, it works perfectly well for what I want it to do. I would say though, my next go to bend is the Zeppelin Bend.

@@KnottingKnots Thanks. Good point. Yes, i love the zeppelin bend, one of my favorite bends. I use the sheet bend mainly to tie a line to a blanket to make a hammock (hehe), for that the zeppelin would be a bit too much. So far it never failed, but the simple bend some times slips and when i fear for my life, i just make give another turn to the last one (double sheet bed, i believe). So was wondering if these Simon bends could work better and if someone has more experience comparing the two. Good point about the advantage of the Simons in shaky loads though. Thanks for your videos again.
