I’ve been a Pilates instructor for 20 years and have been practicing Pilates for 30 plus years and must disagree with your comment about Pilates not being enough to create resistance training. When training on the Pilates equipment there is a multitude of exercises that are weight bearing and can create plenty of resistance.

Amen, Mel! I was injured three years ago and immediately lost all muscle in my body almost overnight! I wrinkled all over including my face. I am depressed, exhausted, with anxiety. I'm vegetarian eating 30 grams of protein on a great day. With clothing on I look 100 years old. Without clothing, I appear 1000 years old. I'm a frail weak woman with low concentration, every autoimmune disease, and and can't sleep well. I'm getting on the protein bus from now on!

Resistance training with weights!!! It takes 3 months to gain muscle and two weeks to lose it. Upper body one day lower body another day and legs a third day. After you’ve built and lost tone, it takes two months to get it all back.🎉 Incorporating cardiovascular each day for 20 minutes and a few others if you wish. It takes 21 days to form a habit.

Mel I’d love you to have Dr Bulsiewicz on. The way we eat to gain the muscle is so so important. As important as lifting. Eating loads of meat will shorten our life and quality. His podcast on Rich Roll about the gut and fiber blew my mind! And I’m all about protein trust me. I love to lift and have definition. I’m just going to be more mindful of where I get it now for long term health Keto for example may look like it’s good on the outside, but it’s creating plaque in your arteries that you can’t feel till it’s too late

A serving of beans is 10 or 11 grams of protein. Two tablespoons of almond butter or peanut butter is 7-8 grams (this is minimally processed organic, w/o sugar or added oil. I can't speak for Jif or Skippy.). I am not a vegetarian, but I do prefer to eat mostly plant based. Even if you get most of your protein from animal products, there is room for lots of it coming from plants. And I believe you'll feel a lot better.

My PT gives me exercises to strengthen my back. But does not encourage more bc it can cause irritation of a nerve. I ask for more. Dr.s tell people to do less? I think people don't want to hear they have to do the work. They want a quick fix. It's also culturally acceptable to eat fast food and sodas. So let's not point fingers. We are all responsible for our own health. As a PT are you going to tell people to stop eating garbage? I wish. That's a major part of the puzzle. Unfortunately my PT also doesn't know about hypothyroidism, and doesn't care.

Addressing protein when it comes to vegan diets, I recommend getting a healthy nutritional professional vegan to speak on. To compare the amino acid profiles with one plant food isn't realistic. All the animals we eat get protein from the plants they eat that make them that big. Humans get get enough protein from plants too and many vegans can prove that.

I started strength training at home during the pandemic with my husband..My MIL could just not understand why I needed to excercise with weights as she has always believed that we women will end up with injury in the uterus if we lifted anything heavy... 1 yr down she got bed ridden with a severe spinal nerve issue which eventually made the muscles of her entire back and both legs spasm completely in an attempt to protect the spine. She had to.undergo rehab therapy which was all about strengthening the muscles in the abdomen and around the spine so that they can protect her bones and the nerves..Her nerve condition will never go away but maintenance can only be done through muscle strenghtening excercises most of the times involving external weights.. So she ended up technically weight training under the doctor's supervision and will have to keep doing it all her life... Now I have the answer to why I needed to lift weights but she does not ask anymore as she knows too.. I lift now so I dont go though what she had to go through . Weight training is the best thing..More important than the world thinks

The first two weeks are tough but now I'm more confident most of the time & feel better. Improvements include Better sleep, more energy on afternoon shift, a desire to eat lighter, improved posture, coordination & body confidence, less sway back pain & I can easily turn over on the massage table without feeling like a beached whale. Yesterday I walked around town in a heatwave with a 6kg backpack then coped with a 18th birthday party til 1am. I'm fine today and loving this video. After a year I noticed a huge difference in my hair! My hair has never looked this good! It's because of higher protein diet. I also take MSM in powder form and cod liver oil. Look these two things up if you're on a hair journey. Msm is great for immunity too I haven't been sick since starting Msm never had covid either I'm a nurse and worked the covid unit too. Great supplement. I thought I would share for anyone on a hair journey. I also quit using shampoo with sulfate.

I work with a trainer, on machines, to fatique and it takes about 20 minutes and I hate it. My husband does the same thing....he has lost about 30 pounds. Me - effing goose egg. There are a million things I would rather do than work out, but when I had my ACL repaired last year, I was so thankful for my upper body strength because the crutches were NO PROBLEM. That is why I do it now, as a preventative like brushing my teeth, so I'm in. I think the missing link is the protein! I purchased the Dr G's book, I can add some of your simple resistance training daily and I can focus on more protein! Thank you, thank you, thank you for bringing this perspective and information! I adore Dr G! She is so passionate and mirrors what she teaches! Such inspiring words! 1 am a 64 year old woman . Being a respiratory therapist in healthcare I totally believe muscle centric is necessary. The patients who I see have been in the hospital for weeks and outcomes of those who are over muscled are by far better. After a week in the hospital you lose 10% of muscle. 💪🏽 #eatmoreprotein#lift#Move#Breathwork 💪🏽💪🏽

I had to pause this video just to say what a fan I am of Dr. Gabrielle and how much I love how real Mel is! “what the hell is an amino acid anyway?” 😆😂 Love it! Not pretentious. Real.

Protein is the key as mentioned but all animal protein increases the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease. Plant protein does not. The strongest animals in the world eat only plants! One can get all the protein one needs from plants. I started a whole food plant based diet over 2 years ago. I lost 60 pounds easily and am now off all Rx medications. I also started weight training and am now addicted. My muscles are now visible, toned, and getting larger. I have great energy abd feel like a teenager even though I am 72 years old.

Plant proteins has phyto estrogens and traces of herbicides. high levels of soy diet made rats in a lab study infertile by the second generation. Animal / whey / casein protein powders for me.

It all boils down to discipline and self-control and being decided on what we want to do. I approach my weight-loss journey with a lot of grace. Everyday, I set our to do my best and if my day wasn’t “perfect”, I don’t sweat it. This has allowed me to SLOWLY but painlessly lose 27 lbs. I have 10 more to go…this is the hardest 10 I’ve tried to lose. Therefore, I’m increasing my strength-training and uptake of protein. Best to you all!

I'm listening 6 months later, but I want to say, "Don't wait until your 63 years old!" Don't wait to not care what others think of you. Don't wait to get strong. Don't wait to appreciate your body just the way it is. Don't wait. Life is too short. I believed older people when they said, the older you get, the faster time flies. I belielved them. Now I know what that feels like. Life as gone by so quickly. I'm choosing not to regret things not done, but dang! I want to be around for the grandbabies I don't have yet. My mind has clicked into taking care of me. Finally. Don't wait! Even at 19. Don't wait.

I was on a good regime first part of the year, and felt great, but life got in the way, I got sick and really struggled with tiredness and weakness, soreness after and my weight lifting petered out and I gained weight. After listening to this I’m getting back to it. I realise how important it is now. I need to gain my muscle back at 58years of age. Why when we’ve had a virus, does it make you so tired and weak that the thought of exercising is just so exhausting. Sometimes even weeks after the virus.

I don’t count protein grams. I eat until I’m full without discomfort (to satiety). Very low carb. At 5’4, I have maintained 120 lbs for a year. I also do moderate amount of resistance exercise 4 days per week.

Yep. I love a moderate, common sense approach. We have more obesity today due to very little outdoor activity…fast-food convenience…delivery service…sodas, coffee drinks, etc.

I literally thought she was talking to/about me, when she mentioned the woman in her late 50s, who had yo-yo dieted her whole life and was struggling to lose weight since she had kids 30 years ago. I have brown eyes and curly hair . I definitely think this podcast was for me and I’m implementing what I’ve learned starting right now.!
