In today's video I'll be showing a simple technique for creating colorful graffiti resin cast pen blanks using the Turners Warehouse single blank molds. I love this technique because it's easy and you can create some really killer colorful blanks.

The blanks came out great. Of course you can see through them. I sprayed the inside of the blank gloss white. Turning a Sierra style pen tomorrow. Can't wait to see how it turns out. Thanks for the great idea.

Well, I'm glad that I could help out. I know I was scared to death of the things when I got started. I would put the air hose on and duck or run! LOL I've learned much along the way though, and they really aren't dangerous as long as you heed the instructions and don't pressurize it over the max for the pot you're using. The only people I know of that have had a problem were way over-pressurizing them or made significant structural modifications to the lid (like cutting and welding things) that most people wouldn't even consider attempting. I hope that you have fun making these graffiti style blanks. They really are fun to make, and so many design options with them!

Great video as always Zac. Your videos are very appreciated....question, when you do any of you clear resin blanks, what do you recommend doing with pen tubes. I'm sure you paint the inside of the blank itself after it's drilled but I always have a problem with how to choose a color that won't take away or look strange with a solid color just running through the center of the blank?

That's a good question. It's tough because painting the blank will transform the look of the blank. I often times just go with nickel plated tubes, they keep the look and feel of the blank relatively intact, only drawback is you will see some glue splotches on the tube.

It's not going to look the same if you pour them vertically, but you could definitely do them with the same colors

Hi I was wondering if you could give me a little information about your 3D printed mold blanks. I would like to try making inside out turned resin ornaments but I have yet to find a mold blank of the right dimensions. Could a 3D blank be reused?

I just wipe off any residue that's on the outside of the blank after demolding it, I heat the mold to flash off any surface moisture and provide the resin a warm environment

I have learned much from your RU-vid.,,. Have one question,,.,. I have a 2” slap of pine that I varnished some years ago, and use for a kitchen table.,. I’m going to inlay some leaves and birds with resin,,. It seems much easier to create pattern and only go part way thru slab? Will I get a lot “nicer” finished project if the pattern shows transparency by having patterned inlay go completely thru slab?? Thank you FRED

I use Alumilite clear, but not the slow set. Do you recommend going by temperature for that as well? 95-100 degrees

Yeah, you can use temp with any resin. You'll want to experiment a bit to find the right temp for you, but I think Clear and Clear Slow are about the same

On another note, if someone were very clumsy and accidentally knocked they lid off of a pressure pot and broke the main pressure assembly off at the base, where might that individual look for replacement parts? Asking for a friend. I can't... Uh... I mean, he can't seem to find them anywhere

Zac Higgins if you had to guess would it be the same or different? Are clear slow and clear different?

The temp just needs to be different from the colors to the clear to keep things from mixing together. Or waiting until the resin is at the end of its pot life can also keep them separated. The problem with waiting until the end of the pot life is the resin is thicker and if you don’t have a pressure pot you most certainly will have air bubbles due to that. Because resin has a reaction that creates heat, large batches produce more heat that smaller ones. So his large cup of resin will be warmer than the little ones that are now colored. When mixing a large amount you need to check the manufacturer max or you will have it go exothermic sitting in that cup in which it hardens in about 5 mins instead of the usual hours to days it normally takes lol. I have had my share of 5 min cures before and they aren’t pretty. I have seen some people use a heat gun to heat up their resin to a temp they want it as well.

I don't have the part number off hand. All I did was search for "tapered spindle" on their website. I use a morse taper arbor from Beall to connect the tapered spindle to

@@ZacHiggins , and thats what I did do. I needed the morse taper from Beall anyways. I really like the tapered mandrel so you can easly just slide on a buff and get to it. However, it costs more to go the route of 2 purchases, 2 shipping costs, etc.. so I just bought the wheel, the adapter, and the morse taper from beall. I can easily switch buffs using that system only it uses a screw with the buffs. Hey, thanks man, I appreciate the options you gave me.

I always use pressure, it's the best way to not have air bubbles in your blanks

Not always, but it can prolong the life of the molds and make demolding easier. I usually don't use it on silicone molds, but it helps out with HDPE, and it is totally necessary for PVC pipes or the resin will usually get stuck in them

Zac Higgins certainly not meant to be an indictment of you or chad. I support both you guys as much as I can. I just happen to think this is an only slightly inferior product that is an copy of a current mold that’s been on the market for awhile. Though most HDPE molds are gonna be more than sufficient for resin casters in my opinion.
