Simple Throttle Body Clean on Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra

Keeping things running smoothly with a little throttle body cleaning on our 2013 Chevrolet Silverado. This should be the same procedure for 2007 to 2013 GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado.
Very quick procedure, with some care. Exercise caution when cleaning or touching the throttle body and don’t be aggressively moving the butterfly in the throttle body if you clean yours.
Have a scan tool ready in case you need to clear a Check Engine Light.
Lastly there’s a risk of high idle after cleaning on some trucks and you may need to take it to a service shop to resolve it if you cannot resolve it on your own.
Note and disclaimer:
This video is for my own personal interest and to share with others for entertainment purposes.
I’m a DIY’er and not a licensed service technician, so proceed at your own risk if you choose to do what I did.

I used your process to clean the throttle body and it worked great. The 3 min on, 1 min off process worked perfectly for the truck to relearn the proper idle. Thank you very much. You helped me save a lot of money

Thanks. This worked great for me. Solved all of my hesitation - rough idle - reduced engine speed issues. Mine was pretty bad took the whole can of throttle body cleaner to work. Cleared my codes P0121 & P2119 & P2135 & P2270. After putting the throttle body back on I did the run for 3 minutes, off for 1 minute, run for 3 minutes, off for 1 minute, run for 3 minutes deal and my idle was good to go. 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE

You didnt need a odb2 or fancy computer for a relearn?
@lmsdiy
@lmsdiy Год назад
@@eldianmolina4920 Thankfully, no. My guess is if the throttle body is very dirty, the computer learns that the throttle is more open for a normal idle because it can't fully close anymore with all the buildup. Once you clean it or replace it and there is a big difference between where the idle sat when it was dirty and when it's clean, I believe it will then idle too high and will need a relearn. Just my opinion...

If your going to do this you may want to change out your o2 sensors also. At least the forward ones. They could have alot to do with poor idle and your carb getting so gummed up. They're easy to change out

Funny you comment that, I’ve been getting the power train module code thrown and she’s idling like shit lately. Sometimes with bad gas it’ll throw “engine idle power reduced” and I’m currently about to clean throttle body. I’m at my wits end with my vehicle. And I’m afraid when I sell it, I won’t get enough from it. But I also don’t want to spend more money on fixing it ya know. Any advice?

How often should this be done on to avoid any issues? I use the truck for daily commute. Thanks!
@lmsdiy
@lmsdiy 6 месяцев назад
Not often. I believe the general guideline is 75,000 miles or 100,000km-ish. I tend to buy used vehicles and work on used vehicles so if it’s been over 100,000km and I don’t think it’s been done I tend to pull the throttle body and see if I feel it needs a cleaning.

And if it idles real high after cleaning throttle body and/or replaced throttle position sensor and you do this process ( it does work - confirmed) then you have to get someone with a high dollar scanner who can reset idle speed in the ecm/computer. $100. Or it will keep wanting to idle at 2000 - 3000 rpm, eventually it will mess up your transmission. Due to trying to put vehicle in drive at such a high rpm.
@lmsdiy
@lmsdiy Год назад
Thank you for adding that. I understand that to be the case exactly as you described also! 👍

Would some place like AutoZone, Advance Auto, or O’Reilly’s have this high dollar scan tool? About to do this procedure this week (slight vibration/shake happening at idle) and, with my luck, my computer won’t re-learn the idle properly. Wanna be prepared, just in case. 2007 Tahoe, 5.3 4x4. Figured I’d start with TB clean before going into changing out spark plugs to address. 🤷🏻‍♂️

My 06 Silverado idles at 500 after cleaning and doing the reset. Is that ok? Or if it’s still low, what can I do to fix it
@lmsdiy
@lmsdiy Год назад
If you want to know the exact, appropriate idle, you may need to check with GM. But, if it's helpful, 500 rpm is pretty normal once the engine is warmed up. That's basically what my 06 used to be at and it's what my 2013 runs at today.

whats up bro love the video man so i just recently cleaned my throttle body on my 05 gmc sierra 5.3 just because i had no check engine light on for it before so after i cleaned it i installed everything back the right way and did the 3 minute idle re learn well tried now when i turn it on it warms up good but once it warms up it starts to surge the rpm goes up and down then when i put it in reverse or drive it revs up and going into gear or to reverse, drive any when i drive it and give it a little pull to see it it feels good i feel good normal power but as soon as i let go the gas now it stays reved up or accelerated then once i come to a stop the idle kind of goes down like slowly and just starts surging again do you think this could be my problem or what else do you think it can be i replaced air filter cleaned my maf sensor do you think this may be the cause of that before my truck wouldn’t do that it would die out coming to a stop though so i would just hold the gas to keep the idle from drop all the way and stalling the truck ?
@lmsdiy
@lmsdiy 4 месяца назад
Hey brother, I've heard of it but have not had to resolve that personally. Assuming things like "you were careful with the TB cleaning and didn't damage the TB", "the crud isn't just moved around in the TB causing the butterfly to get a bit stuck or sticking", "the MAF is not dirty", "it's not a vacuum leak issue", etc., I would check simple things first, like detach/reattach connections to make sure they are secure, follow my previous steps to make sure I didn't make an error or disconnect something unintentionally and forget to reconnect it (a hose, a connector, a gasket, etc.), and so forth. Then, from what I've read it sounds like there are a couple of options to consider: 1. Redo the idle relearn for your truck's year/model. Something along the 3min/1min/3min approach for however many times applicable (probably 3 cycles). Then drive it around for fifteen minutes or so, then turn it off for 1min. Start it up and drive it around again and then off again for 1min and see how it responds. I'd caution that if the idle is so high that you can't put it in gear without a crunch, that's probably not a good thing to do! 2. Use a scan tool that can perform an idle relearn or take it (if possible) to a service shop or dealership that can perform that for you. If in doubt, and the simple things have all been ruled out, it's never a bad idea to take it to a professional for a diagnosis. If you're a backyard mechanic like me, I keep inspecting and retracing and cleaning and researching until I figure it out! Good luck, bro!

I haven’t experienced that myself but from what I’ve read, it seems to happen if there is something wrong with the butterfly valve or sometimes when peeps clean it too aggressively. The only thing I know would be to warm up the engine and do the idle relearn again and again. Aside from that (again from what I’ve read not experienced myself) it’s replacing the throttle body and/or getting a professional to diagnose further. 😕

Mine does the same thing. From what I understand on this era of Chevy is the only thing that can be done is have someone with a scanner do an idle relearn. Bad part is trying to get the truck to someone, means shifting into drive at 2000 rpm. This was actually a dumb move to do this on my part. The video needs to be updated to share this additional info.
