Brilliant! Thank you. I had an electrician come do small electrical jobs in my kitchen and he couldn't figure out how to change the old hockey puck lights to the new one led ones and make it look neat. I watched your video, ordered the small junction boxes and in a hour changed 5 of them. I used a dremel to cut the notches in the plastic boxes worked like a charm. Thank you for saving me hiring another electrician. Now might add dimmer these leds are very bright. Thanks again!

Awesome video I’m planing on doing similar way but no cuts in dry wall just drill what you did than fish everything down. I don’t think it’s necessary to cut out that big hole in dry wall You could also cut hole in bottom cabinet and fish up 👍🏻

Yes, that should work ad sounds good. Just be patient. Very cool

GREAT video! I'm actually redoing my kitchen and replacing my old puck lights. I didn't know you could snip the plug and make them hardwired. I checked out the ones you mentioned, but hate 2700k. I can't find 4000 - 6000k hardwired (No transformer) pucks ANYWHERE!
@metaspencer
@metaspencer 4 года назад
Yeah, it's hard to find the exact light quality you like .... I tend to think that dimmed, the 2700k bulbs aren't too bad, but some people notice their color a lot more. Anyway: thanks for checking it out!

This was my exact question: how to snip the puck light wire to make it hardwired? Can I use regular scissors for this?

Great work. In Chicago we have to use conduits. And that means I have to cut open way more drywall.

Great video. What did you do with the ground wire running from the power source to the puck? It looked like there were only two wires from the provided cable you cut. Thanks
@metaspencer
@metaspencer 2 года назад
Typically I'll use the ground wire to ground the metal junction box, if there is one. With plastic boxes and only two wires to the lights, I typically just terminate the ground wire

Great job! Definitely inspired me to do the same. By the way you can probably find a small junction box on mcmaster.

At the final connection of the wires, no mention made of polarity, hot side of wire etc. In my case the power source wire is all black, no white-and-black so I had to find the positive side and then make sure I figured out the positive side of the puck's wire.This is tricky and should be mentioned.

Looks like the they are 14/2 wire. When do you use 12/2 and 14/2?

Check a wiring chart but basically 14/2 is just for lights

I tried this and could not get lights to come on. ???
@metaspencer
@metaspencer 4 года назад
Well, sounds like you need to do some trouble shooting: test for power, test the lights independently, then see where you're at
@williamstegall9241
@williamstegall9241 4 года назад
All lights brand new. All worked when plugged in before cutting cord in video. Wall switch has power so really not sure why it's not working.
@metaspencer
@metaspencer 4 года назад
@@williamstegall9241 you could try reversing the wires where you spliced them. They could need the hot lead to go into the light on the other wire
@mkl5448
@mkl5448 4 года назад
I feel like you could have dropped your wires down into the crawl and avoided the drywall repairs. Like if there was a tile backsplash. I have done it and it's not too bad.
@metaspencer
@metaspencer 4 года назад
That would be a great way to go -- but framing kept blocking my fish tape. Avoiding drywall repairs is always ideal.
@mkl5448
@mkl5448 4 года назад
@@metaspencer Yes, framing can be a real pain in the butt. I assumed you couldn't, but thought I would add it for others. Nice job though, you definitely have a nice set of skills. Keep up the good work and well done videos.

I’m figuring this out for myself now too. One way I have looked at is pulling the stove. Then you can cut a larger panel out and drill through the studs and replace with a steel cover or just screw a large piece of drywall back on, but not much stress getting it too look real nice. Also suggest cardboard on the counter. The cheap al mg cast drills these days mark up easy.

Good to know that those don't need a transformer. That's the reason I haven't installed under cabinet lights.

Why did the one puck light went in in an angle? You just have measured and drilled it incorrectly. But great job in explaining things.

Why in the world did you cut the lamp wire to use that little J box? If you're cutting the drywall and using that raceway, why didn't you just join the lamp wire to the romex in the wall? Could even have mounted a box in the wall for the connection if you were worried about it, would have been so much cleaner...
@metaspencer
@metaspencer 4 года назад
Woah, bury a junction and/or junction box in the wall? that's a code violation, man ... there is one UL rated junction device out there that I know of, but they're hard to come by
@johnmarshall8171
@johnmarshall8171 4 года назад
@@metaspencer Thank you for pointing out the code issue. I had a recent renovation where my electrician did the same thing Mr. nuff'said suggested. Catastrophe. It is a lazy man's solution to a common problem. Unfortunately you see on RU-vid too many amateurs claiming to know how to do some things that are in fact potentially deadly.
