For stubborn folks (like me) that demand stainless steel, substitute a stainless steel tray to obtain your metal stock. This is a very handy idea as I am guessing there are canteen cups from many sources that are not supplied with a lid. Old cups that did have a lid but it was lost or damaged beyond use would certainly befit from this project. Thank you James for another helpful and easy DIY.
@WayPointSurvival

Yes, I would prefer stainless steel myself but aluminum is easier to work with for the average person.

Ingenious design! This solution solves the age old problem of finding a properly fitting lid for the venerable U.S. GI canteen, which is one of the most useful items of gear ever invented. Love your video clips! You know growing up in the bayou of Louisiana we often went weeks without electricity. On hot days we'd coat the inside of the mailbox with foil. Outside mailbox always painted black. It would cook a loaf of bread in an hour. I mean it got hot! You'd see a dead frog out on the road at 7am and by 11am it's bubbling and sizzling in the sun, and the odor wafts up and punches you like a bad fart on a long elevator ride. Dead frogs that stink that bad should be featured on a Bud Light can!!!

James, although a great idea, I take issue with the idea that it would be low cost for everyone. I was initially so excited about the possibility of a budget lid. But for those who don’t have access to a pop revit, metal snips, files, sander or dremel, drill press and bits and possibly an anvil, then it would be way cheaper to buy an already made pot and lid. Perhaps you could list the materials and tools needed in the opening of the video? Much appreciated for your time and effort!
@WayPointSurvival
@WayPointSurvival Год назад
Thanks. The reason that I didn't list all of the tools at the beginning is because people wouldn't watch the video all the way through. Even though you may not have the tools right now, watching it being done is a great visual aid for later on should the need arise and the materials be available.

So instead of using the aluminum hooks, I'd suggest leaving two rectangular tabs at each hook point in the aluminum and just bending it to fit over the edges. And then just drill two holes in the center and thread a key ring or something similar thru for your handle. No extra cost for the other pieces, and no rivet gun/rivets needed

Another great idea, I was thinking, rather than making hooks to go on the center an attaching them with rivets. Couldn't you make the lid to the same circumference as the outside of the cup, and leave like a 1/4" in of the metal of the lid an bend it down to catch on the cup on opposing ends an still use your hanger, plus drill the holes in one end for drinking, it was just a thought, what do you think ?. An it would still nest in the bottom of a canteen carrier. Thx for the vid James

I guess if a person wants to screw around and make it themselves for about the same price as buying a good one online this certainly works. You can buy the aluminum ones for for five bucks or you can buy the stainless steel ones, or even titanium which I believe was around 10 or 12 bucks. You can't do it with aluminum, but with the stainless steel or the titanium you can actually use it as a small frying pan if you had to. I've seen people cook their eggs on top. I'm not sure but I may have seen you do that. If you make one of those for fun I guess that's a pretty cool project. However when purchasing them remember they come in two sizes depending upon which cup you're trying to fit. Some of the cups are slightly different
@WayPointSurvival

The problem with purchasing one is that many of them do not fit very well and just sort of sit on top. I have several of them.

I don't know, why you made the hooks separately - leave some 'ears' when you cut the lid out and bend them to shape like your strips. It also might be helpful to turn the picture hanger/handle 90°, so you can lift it with a stick when the pot is hanging from the bail. Just my two cents.
@WayPointSurvival

Sure you can do that. However, they would tend to get stressed and break off more easily than the tabs which can also be replaced when needed.
