Simple Wood Fired Water Heater in Off Grid Cabin

We have been using this wood fired water heater for many years in this off grid cabin. This is a continuous flow water heater. It is plumbed just like a conventional water heater. The name on it is Hotpro. Also AquaFire. When heated the tank holds enough hot water to do the dishes and two showers. If the fire is kept going, it can do more. It does not take much wood to heat the water. I like to use small wood scraps.

Growing up we had a water pre-heater that ran a water line through a wood stove, and into a pre-heated water tank that fed the electric water heater. It had a pressure release valve for safety and would occasionally dump hot water out on the cellar floor next to a water drain. All homemade, prompted by the early 70's energy crisis and the sudden spike in the cost of electricity.
@WilsonForestLands
@WilsonForestLands 5 месяцев назад
It’s good they put a pressure release in it. I have heard stories of people trying to make water heaters and they don’t realize they are making a bomb.

Ah your mother wears army boots. Are saying you can't have a cold water heater? A heater that makes water hot is a hot water heater. If you tried to make a compound word out of it like hotwater heater it wouldn't make sense. But to have a heater that produces hot water can certainly be called hot water heater as well as a heater that produces warm water can be called a warm water heater.
@hobbyfarmer62
@hobbyfarmer62 5 месяцев назад
First of you are correct it is a water heater. That is one of the coolest off grid units I have ever seen, yes with the boom in off grid living surprised someone doesn't make one. If I was a few years younger would give real thought to making some.

Cool water heater, we use to have a line running through the coal furnace into a dummy tank that the electric heater would draw from. Basically free hot water during the winter. Cool idea but the fire box is so small it would need constant attention. Have a good one

A little bit different context with your video, I like it. BTW all my life and I'm 82 I have always called it a hot water heater and yes I am fully aware of your explanation but what difference does it make, Hot water or water?. anyway i do like your videos, and don't pay any attention to this old man's comments. Hi Mike, I agree. First of all everyone knows exactly what you're talking about and second, what if do like I do and not let the water get hot? I only run mine until the water gets warm. So I believe I can call it a warm eater heater. If you took a shower at my house you'd crank the scald guard water valve all the way over to hot but will only come out warm. If the heater is actually running it may become a little too hot unless you like it hot. I don't and don't call it a warm water heater eventhough that's exactly what it produces. I still call it a hot water heater, but mostly because it's not a hot air heater. O F'n K?

Maybe you already answered this, but what kind of water system do you have feeding your cabin? Since it’s off grid, I’m assuming it’s not an electric pump. Are you sourcing the water from a spring or creek? Does it run by gravity to the cabin? I have a rural cabin here in Pennsylvania with a drilled water well and electric pump. But I also have a year round spring that I’m going to develop so that I have another source of water. At any rate, nice place and I like your channel and content! Keep it coming.

OK lots of questions here. Are there air openings to get a good draft ? What kind of pumping system do you use to get the water into the tank and then into the cabin ? What kind of chimney and how do you clean it? Looks like something to consider for my cabin. Thanks
@WilsonForestLands
@WilsonForestLands 5 месяцев назад
Air comes in through the bottom around where the ashtray is. If there is an adjustment I haven’t noticed it and it doesn’t seem to need one. It’s a gravity feed water system through a pipe from the creek up the hill. The chimney is a straight 4 inch pipe through the roof. With proper insulation apparatus of course. I have never cleaned the chimney, not sure if any other family has. Something I will have to find out.

A hot water heater is a water heater that heats water up hot. It could be a warm water heater if it heats water to warm, but it doesn't have to start with warm water. A cold water heater can't heat water to cold, but it can certainly heat cold water up until it's hot. At my house ever since I was a kid I've had hot running water that comes from a hot water heater. It's not a cold water heater.

Most people interchange the term water heater and hot water tank. As a result the names have blended to hot water heater. Drives me nuts. Akin to someone saying de thaw. To de thaw is to freeze. Most will say I took x out of the freezer to dethaw. You take something out to defrost.
