When I plant my tomato seedlings, the push a couple of tums tablets into the soil about an inch deep right next to the tomato stem, one on each side of the stem. Four weeks later, I push one more tablet into the ground next to the stem. Four weeks later... one more tablet again. That takes care of the whole rest of the growing season. I haven't had blossom end rot since starting this method. And it's just too easy.

What helped my blossom end rot. I save my egg shells. Bake them at 250 degrees for 30 minutes. Then crush them into a powder. Then scratch it into the soil. Plants respond really fast. I now have a healthy watermelon fruit

the first few tomatoes i harvested off two determinate plants i had this year had blossom end rot. i shoved two tums down to the roots and watered deeply. no other tomatoes that the plant made had the disease! might have been just luck but i'm not complaining.

Hey! One time I had a bottle of calcium tablets that had expired. I took a broom handle and made a whole right next to every plant. They were established but without fruit. I dropped a tablet in each hole. Then closed the whole with the handle. Best tomato plant’s that i can remember!

@loloholmes2793
@loloholmes2793 2 года назад
@@thesimracingpodcastgregdraiss it works but you can't spray it at night. If she's experiencing BER it's probably because she's watering at night & not allowing the leaves to dry. Bad watering practices are 99.9% of fungal diseases.
@mikeries8549
@mikeries8549 4 года назад
To prevent blossom end rot: When you plant dig a trench and lay the plant in it. Bury it all except the top set of leaves. It makes the plant make lots of roots. Blossom end rot general effects the first "round" of fruit because there aren't enough roots. Second...keep em wet especially during the first blossoming. If it's not wet the calcium don't get taken in. If your root system is small and weak...the fruit pays the price.

We’ve had several heat waves here and started having issues with BER. TUMS mixed in water sprayed on the plants in the morning (pre 80 deg) has really helped with BER. The plants are visibly healthier too. For a longer term solve I’ve added crushed oyster shell and pelletized lime to the base of each plant. Next year I’ll add more oyster shell to the holes before planting and water more consistently vs just deeply during heat waves. Thanks for the tips HOtG!

I watched a lot of your videos before this growing season. I was able to get a lot of things started on my own including my tomatoes. I have heavily changed how I grow my tomatoes the last couple of years. I have always crowded my tomatoes and that hasn't changed. What changed is keeping the bottom 12-18 inches pruned. I also moved cages/stakes, to a sort of experimental trellis system, to ultimately a Florida weave/tie hybrid method with some borrowed measures from the grape farmers. I have a soaker hose run at the bottom of the plants I pre fertilized each hole with blood meal, bone meal, garden lime, fertilized once with general liquid fertilizer, and an Epsom salt/banana water mix. Everything was planted as deep as possible. As I've pruned them I've mounded soil around the stem to hopefully produce more roots and to help keep the ground moist. I heavily mulched with straw. Some say not to because it reflects the sun and doesn't heat the soil. Imo this is more for peppers and causes your soil to dry out faster using a non reflective mulch. I just have to run my soakers on a trickle for a couple of hours a few times a week. Everything is staying pretty moist without using a crazy amount of water despite the heat. I also have a succession crop, from suckers, going in once the determinate Romas finish. Starting inside early and some careful planning have me looking at more Romas than I'll know what to do with other than can. You and everyone in the RU-vid garden community have really changed how I approach gardening. You especially give how similar your zone and climate are to mine.

Super tip, I didn't know this one. A tip in return - to crush a tablet just get another spoon the same size and use it to crush the tablet between the spoons and it keeps the powder on a spoon. You learn these things when you have to give meds to your children...or dogs! Best Wishes, Brendan

wow What a tremendous turn around first time I ever did 5 gal. bucket plants. I treated at beginning believing that was enough treated with Pelleted lime, along with a Aspirin but it was not enough. plants grew fantastic green green ton of flowering by week 6 nothing all my tomato growth stunted at about the size of a grape then blossom end for set in. I tried this method picked off all the ruined fruits new tomatos took off good size turning red no sign of any end rot. Cheaper & Improved results thank you.

I use 2 oyster shell calcium vitamins - 1 per seach side of the plant. We have a drip system so each time it runs (every other day) it takes some of the calcium with it. You can reapply the vitamins every month or so. This helps eliminate blossom end rot. Water on a regular basis & never let the dry out.....

Bought the tablets today, 750 mg like you said, and will spray later to avoid the midday sun. Question?: I had several with end rot and threw them away. Have several others getting ripe and show no signs of being affected. Possible that not all the new ones won't be? Also, how about a follow up application? Only have 3 plants and a gallon of mix. Use it up weekly? Great tip. Sure hope it works!

I use mycorrhizae to naturally raise the calcium levels. It’s a fungus that attaches to the roots and goes where the roots can’t go and finds the calcium and brings it to the roots opening extra calcium channels it’s like a second root it even looks like a root . This works best when your phosphorus is at minimum. You can also use brixx meters to test for your calcium in the leaves although you can tell when it’s working.
