Catering to new, intermediate, and or infrequent time lapsers who just want to get great results with minimal effort.
In this video we dive into all the different settings, and what they mean, as well as give a few extra tips on how to get better time lapses that I think are helpful.
There are also written guide on my website if you want to bookmark that for when you're on the shoot as well.

If you shoot in aperture priority, wouldn’t the time lapse speed up in night time as camera would slow down the shutter speed to maintain exposure?

Great question. Short answer. Absolutely yes it can slow it down. That's why you want to choose a good interval for them. However, many newer cameras now have minimum and maximum ISO features. So you can just turn up your max ISO so that way it goes to that first if you are concerned about keeping the EXACT same shutter speed the entire time. But as long as the shutter speed doesn't exceed the interval, you're fine!

Thanks Scott, I'm a long term photographer, but new to video. I just liked and subbed as I'm inspired to get good at doing this in some awesome locations. I shoot on Sony too - which looks pretty capable for this kind of thing, esp. now they added back interval shooting into firmware (it was missing when I first bought a Sony a7riii late 2018). I know I need to get out shoot, review, learn, adapt, shoot more etc as a good way to develop my skill. Currently I haven't done this yet, so it's still conceptual for me. I'm pretty sure that after I start doing practical shooting, rather than just reading about it, that things that are vital, vs just nice to do, will become a lot clearer. One query is the S&Q mode on Sony video (which I never yet experimented with), which you don't mention? Is this something one should effectively ignore or potentially embrace as well as or instead of shooting a series of stills? Clearly if following your tip on shooting raw, then it looks like stills is the way to go (since raw output in video frames isn't an option due to patent limits on Sony, unless capturing to a Ninja V on a separate drive). Currently I don't quite understand how 400+ stills are imported into edit software to create a video (say output to 24 or 30 FPS). For video it's hard to see much need for resolution beyond 4k (currently, albeit that may change in future) - which is way smaller than stills on just about any full frame Sony. So would appreciate any thoughts you may have on this/futureproofing. Sorry lots of questions.

Hey Ricky, great to meet you and thanks for the kind words. Sony's great and absolutely know you'll get the hang of it. It's like when we first learned about iso, shutter speed, and aperture. After a bit it's just second nature. After a few attempts you'll nail it. S&Q is great. I think it's a really fun tool I need to explore more and perfect for BTS, and updates for social. Regarding turning stills into finished video. There's a lot great ways to do it. My favorites are LRTimelapse or After Effects. But I also hear great things about the pro version of DaVinci. It has a powerful editing solution for even 8k time lapses in raw. Regarding 4k/futureproofing. It's all personal taste, I like the 8k so I can crop in/reframe or do fun animations. But it's definitely overkill in a lot of situations. Great questions, lemme know if you have more and happy shooting!

@@ScottHerder Thanks for your response Scott. I have a studio license for DaVinci Resolve so will investigate TL options with that as well as looking at LRT. I previously bought into DaVinci as I felt it was possibly the best editing software for video. But l have yet to get to grips with it - only edited one video so far, so really I'm a complete newbie to video with so much to learn. Def need to find more time to get out, practice and learn. I understand stills work pretty well, had some success, even won a few awards, but that's no surprise as I have been shooting stills for years. Yet, seeing your excellent work with time lapse sequences has truly inspired me. For sure it makes me want to start exploring this type of output too. I probably need to start experimenting with a few local, relatively mundane scenes, to learn enough about the basics first. Then start planning to make epic and creative visuals. I'd hate to go to an exotic location, with bags of potential, only to fall short due to ignorance and inexperience i.e. metaphorically, I feel a need to learn how to walk before attempting running. But now I have a direction and vision for where I need to head towards. So, I'm looking forward to the journey and thank you for motivating my interest in this 'new to me' genre.

@@rickymcc8624 I've never used DaVinci - bur Drew Geraci ( a talented filmmaker/photographer) has this workflow - I'd recommend watching, it looks pretty straightforward ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CMLoqcwpACo.htmlsi=Uoj6q7iIuaZrwKRj

I'm still shooting with my old 6D's (got four of them though one is dead) I use Magic Lantern and use the ETTR feature to ramp my settings and for me it works well! A USB-C battery coupler and a large Pulse width Power bank Lets me shoot milky way timelapse all night

Auto white balance, or set it manually? Im just want to make sure before i spend those 2 hrs and get home a lil disappointed lol

In a perfect world you'll want to set it manually. If not sure what to use cloudy. You can edit the white balance in post.

Ten seconds is wrong for lots of circumstances, one of them the field of view. If you use two cameras covering the same scene, one with your 100-400 at 400 and the other your 16-35 at 16mm, then this will become clear. Ideally, your exposures will b one half of the interval duration. This gives the 180 degree shutter filmmakers adore. If you are using the camera's meter, you should also set auto ISO. If you use an external intervalometer, consider exposure bracketting. With the internal intervalometer too, if it's supported. My cameras don't.

John such a well thought out addition to intervals and Timelapse thank you so much! I tried to bridge the fine line of information that would give a newcomer as much actionable info without overwhelming them and definitely overlooked that in simplifying. But will pin that so people can see that yes the focal length definitely needs consideration as well. Great comment, gives me some ideas for future content. Much appreciated!
