Jamie Lee Curtis did her own helicopter stunt, after being encouraged by Arnold. It was filmed on her birthday and she said she wanted to do it because she wanted to be able to look back and say “I fucking did that”, which is amusingly her character’s exact motivation.

31:00 Remember, Harry repurposed the mission resources from following Juno and the terrorists to first follow his wife, and then play act with her. That was the hotel room he told Juno he was staying at. They literally was watching him since he checked in with Juno, which is how they 1st follow him into the mall. Waiting for a moment for Harry to let his guard down, they thought he did order a hooker, until Helen ruined it by saying she's his wife.

I think what makes James Cameron such a special writer and director is that he has not only the big events and deep meaningful messages, but also many nuanced touches. In this film there are seemlying thousands of them. Here are a couple of small things off the top of my head: Dana feeding the "gizmo" dog the cake batter. Also, you caught on to how pathetic that dog was as Harry dragged it around in the rain during their "walk". However, they weren't mean about the dog - it was still a loved family member. The big guy in the bathroom fight scene was shown as stronger and winning the brute strength battle - only Harry's ingenuity to rip the air blower off the wall as a weapon gave him the victory. Dana taking money, and that her parents are Axle Rose and Madonna. "Hurry 'cause my horse is getting tired". Also, Harry's light-hearted chewing out of the horse on the roof. "Welcome to the club". BTW, Tom Arnold ad-libbed that story of the ice cube trays as Rosanne Barr did that when they broke up. "but they were all bad" The battery running out on the camcorder and the guy was sweating it so much. Helen put her ring on her right-hand finger with the diamond on the inside(at the hotel), so that when she slapped Juno she cut her face - to me that was the women's "it's on" moment and nothing is off limits from there on. "That key" (which is no longer there), and his expression when he cannot believe what he is seeing as Harry arrives in the jet. "'I've been in the van for 15 years" which is not only very funning, but also revisiting the theme of being in a rut and missing out on the excitement like Harry and Helen were. ...and so many more. To me this is one of the best-crafted movies of all time, and still very re-watchable and enjoyable even after 100s of times.

Tie in the effects, the cast performances, and the stunts and it's just a great flick which is as good today as it was when it released. Because you meant the scene with the Uzi, "No way..." My little brother served with the German Panzergrenadiers. And when the house-to-house combat practiced, they didn't use hand grenades to clear a room, but instead used an unlocked Uzi and threw it through the window. Because the Uzi starts extremely easily, it fires its entire 32 shots in the magazine within 2 seconds. And due to the enormous ricochets produced with it, the room is in tatters afterwards. But the advantage over a hand grenade is that the building is still safe to enter, while the explosion of a hand grenade could have so structurally damaged the house that if it were occupied by friendly troops, it could easily collapse. That's why this scene, absolutely realistic...

33:32 Thor, most consumer camcorders in 1994 recorded onto video tapes, not memory cards. The most likely reason a digital video file would be unplayable in a situation like this is that it's an MP4 file and the MOOV atom, the bit of metadata needed for a player to understand the stream, is only written at the end when properly closing the file. But with a video tape, everything a player needs is physically right there where the video and audio are recorded. So no footage would be lost from before power-off. It'd still be a bit annoying, though, to have such a rough interruption in the presentation, considering they probably wouldn't have anything to edit video with, video editing capabilities not being ubiquitous in those days.

I rewatched this on patreon and I laughed so hard my sides hurt. The one I always remembered as a kid was the battery dying (so I'm glad you appreciated that one!)...Bill Paxton was amazing in this role I agree...and when they dangle him off the cliff (iconic!)...but for me, the scene stealer every time was Tom Arnold who plays Arnie's partner. Every single jab he slips in had me dying (the interrogation scene and then when they think Helen cheated, the first thing he said was "welcome to the club, man!" 😂). I also like how you appreciated Jamie Lee. I agree, she did such a great job portraying the growth of her character and I've always found her to be a very sincere actress in general. And finally, I just want to add that the ladies in this film were just stunning. Jamie Lee and her black dress will forever be on my list and the "bad girl" played by Tia Carrere was my girl crush during this film...evil but dang it, she's so classy! Perfect casting across the board!...Oh, and yes the daughter is Faith from Buffy...took you long enough Thor! haha. But thanks so much for reacting to this. It's actually a remake from a French comedy much less actiony that this one (much more cheap also) and one of the few, if the only one to be better than the original. So if you're ever interested in some good French comedies from the 90's (which I'd love to see reactions to), I can suggest you "La Cité de la Peur" (1994), "Les Visiteurs" (1993), "Taxi" (1998), and if you step a bit on the 2000's, you have "Asterix & Obelix : Mission Cléopatre" (2002) which is the best of all of them, and also the only valid live action adaptation of the french comics Astérix. But Please, be sure to go for the original french movies, some of them have american remakes that are "meh" at most.

Yeah, shooting inside the van like that, your hearing is hosed for a couple hours, if you're lucky.

Somehow this movie manages to be serious, full of really good action, comedic, deal with drama and family issues, all at once. For me this and T2 are where Cameron peaked. This is where he was a master. Now he just has more money than God. Paxton absolutely oozes in that role. Tom Arnold is freaking hilarious. Tia Carrere's face when the terrorist hits her the 2nd time is priceless. "Hit me again, see what happens!" The terrorists face seeing the Harrier jet there in disbelief. It's just a damn fun and good ride start to finish. Doesn't waste time. Keeps moving. Also, it has extremely amazing miniature works that is nearly flawless.

It’s amazing how people who are permanent staples on TV go one day and no one remembers them. The red glasses! 🤓 There was a comedian with a lady puppet who was always on TV in the early 80s and I always wondered where he went. I believe he passed of aids. 😢

Great review/reaction. There's another husband and wife rom-com Espionage movie that's quite entertaining. "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolee. I read somewhere that they fell for each other while filming this movie. I really enjoyed it anyway. I haven't seen it reviewed or reacted to either. Action is great. Stay safe...be well...

I don't think there will ever be a better movie in this genre than True Lies. It's a masterclass in action comedy.

I knew that you would like this. So glad you watched it. Great 90's Action/Comedy for sure!! It was nice to see Arnold with a bit more dialogue in a film. He was just as funny as Tom Arnold and Jamie Lee Curtis. I'm 37 and these are the movies that we grew up on. A roll em if you got em flick. Lol. 👍

I think this film was Cameron's answer to all those who said that his films had no humor, that they were very serious, and Cameron showed with True Lies that he can also do very good comedy, with great action scenes. I recommend Bad Boys 1, 2 and 3, with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, also with this same formula, a very funny comedy with great and very expensive action sequences, especially Bad Boy 2, which was quite an expensive movie and it shows that big budget in the action scenes

Really happy you enjoyed this! I enjoyed your enjoying it. I agree with your assessment of Schwarzenegger's Harry. One thing Arnold doesn't do is take himself too seriously. I recall when he was doing his first real starring role film, "Conan the Barbarian". I saw this in the theaters and didn't hold out much belief he would be any good, but then there's Conan passing out face-down in his gruel, and he immediately won me over. Another action-comedy would be "Kingsman: The Secret Service" (2014). Recommended!

One of my all-time favorite movies! A perfect balance of action, humor, & romance. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Arnold, & Bill Paxton were all fantastic!

Saw this movie with my husband the day I had the mid-pregnancy ultrasound with my oldest child. I sat there remembering all the images we'd seen earlier and grinning like an idiot. It was already a great movie, but the memories attached to it make it even better!
