Brendan Fraser was so dreamy then. He’s still lovely but I remember watching him in the theater with my best friend and both of us being smitten by him immediately ❤. This was not our first Brendan Fraser movie, but he was just so handsome here.

Those first 2 Mummy films with Rachael Weiss were just cinematic classics, and yet more movies, that you can name when one if the new 'Starlets' claim there were no strong women in movies, the exploits of a humble Librarian kept me more enthralled than any Marvel/DC Heroine.

Rachel in mummy 1999 is a perfect example of born sexy yesturday trope, she doesn't act her age. She's not bold nor mature, she was the damsel in distress to be saved, scared and kissed without permission by the men.

How can nobody realize Winston wanted to die? He helped knowing he was going to die. He was ready to die so he could be with his buddies from the war that he missed. He just needed a noble cause to sacrifice himself for

Evie gets a couple things wrong when she’s talking about mummification. They actually DIDN’T remove the heart and brain. They left the heart in because, according to their mythology, the heart was required for Anubis to test you to see if you’re worthy of entering the Afterlife. Anubis places your heart on a scale and weighs it against a feather, and your heart needed to be lighter than a feather to be allowed access to the Afterlife (if you committed a lot of sins and didn’t atone for them, the guilt for those sins would weigh down your heart and make it heavy). As for the brain, the ancient Egyptians didn’t understand exactly what the brain was, but they DID know that it was important, because they knew that they had to relieve tension on the brain to help heal injuries to the head.

1:37 it has historical references (names, items etc.) but they’re all jumbled into an ahistorical mess. That said, no one is watching this as an educational documentary lol. I’m reminded of the Ebert review of this film: "There is hardly a thing I can say in its favor, except that I was cheered by nearly every minute of it. I cannot argue for the script, the direction, the acting or even the mummy, but I can say that I was not bored and sometimes I was unreasonably pleased.”

One thing I CONSTANTLY hear from archaeologists about films like this one and the Indiana Jones films is that ancient booby-traps did NOT exist. I also constantly hear from them that if these traps DID exist, then the archaeologists would be spending more time studying the TRAPS than studying the treasures!

In Ancient Egypt people used to dress in linen (normally, I think, undyed), which is a fabric that is very transparent; that is why they used to cover their parts with more layers of linen than the body, as can be seen in the wall paintings of the Egyptians themselves at that time

The net dress and wide necklace that Anuk su Namun was wearing was pretty accurate, and you can see examples like that in museums. During the Millenia the Pharoah’s ruled, nudity was not really taboo. People dressed for the weather, which meant decorating the body more than wearing clothes, as such. While loincloths were common, bare breasted women were just as common. Women decorated their bare breasts with make-up, emphasising their nipples and veins. And like Anuksunamun here, sometimes the wealthy wore gold leaf on their nipples. I’m really glad you liked The Mummy, it’s still one of my favourite films. It managed to be like Indiana Jones while being very much enough of its own thing to not feel like a copy. Its magnificent balance between comedy, pathos, action, satire and romance is matched by True Lies, and Galaxy Quest. (Although the romances in Galaxy quest are not as prominent, it’s still a magnificent multigenre masterpiece)

concerning historical accuracy, they mixed different real people in different times and kinda made a mix of it all lol, but it's still a fantastic movie, just not accurate where the "real people" are concerned. For example, the Medjay were real but they were more like elite mercenaries or fighters than bodyguards, the Book of the Dead was more like an instructional manual for entering the afterlife (and was more like a scroll), Hamunaptra was not a real city, and the Hom-Dai method of mummifying is not a real thing either. Imhotep was a real priest though :)
@arianaink100

I use to love this movie as a child who was obsessed with Egyptian history and mythology. There’s very few interesting movies that actually look at Egyptian themes and do it semi well. The canopic jars are real things for mummies - you’re trying to dry out a body and unfortunately the internal organs liquify after death they decomp and result in buildup of not only gasses but decay. so instead of making a ton of rotting corpses in a major city area and instead of mass burning of bodies the rich/important/wealthy would get mummified and have those parts which rot removed allowing the body to then be mostly muscle and bone which can easily dry out and be preserved. The different removed organs had significance and the jars displaying the gods heads mean those organs will be watched over and protected through the iconography. and I always felt the ghost story aspects of wandering souls or souls that take over bodies was actually somewhat accurate to how Egyptian mythology saw the human spirit - this movie felt like a decent Egyptian ghost story which is so rare to see- something that can rest but the spirit can also walk amongst the living if disturbed. The idea of ka was never really seen in films so obviously without getting into the whole (you’re American here’s what a soul is, this is the historic context of the soul and it’s treatment, this is why procedures are done in society and why things were done in religious practices)

YES!! One of my favorite movies as a kid! Originally, a lot of horror film directors were considered for making a new MUMMY film since the early 90's, Wes Craven, John Landis, John Carpenter, Joe Dante, Clive Barker, Mick Garris, David Cronenberg, Sam Raimi, and George Romero were considered for the job. Interestingly enough, John Carpenter and John Landis were considered for directing a remake of Creature Of The Black Lagoon. Stephen Sommers, a fan of the original, was hired after his last film, DEEP RISING, bombed at the box office a year earlier. Several actors were considered for Rick O'Connell, Kurt Russell, Sylvester Stallone, Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, Tom Cruise, Matt Damon, and Leonardo DiCaprio were considered for the role. Brendan Fraser was picked as he was just an ordinary guy who gets thrust into this extraordinary adventure. Sommrs wanted the film to be "Indiana Jones meets Jason And The Argonauts."
@nickreacts6394
@nickreacts6394 10 месяцев назад
I'm surprised that Stephen Sommers was picked (especially after a box office bomb) amidst a lineup of talented horror directors like that, but I think he did such an excellent job at balancing the humor and scares without makind anything feel jarring tonally. Having seen both Indi and Jason, I think Sommers achieved exactly what he set out to do! And woah did Brendan Fraser have some stiff competition there, but he was born to play the part!

This is one of my favorite movies of all time! I love it. It has everything, action, horror, comedy, just enough romance, ancient Egypt, super memorable characters, and it's well done...Hope you're doing The return because it's almost as good. And you're doing Harry Potter??? yaaaaaaay. Can't wait

If you haven't seen it, "The Rundown" (2003) also called "Welcome to the Jungle" is a fun action adventure comedy.

When it comes to adventure movies, the first two Mummy movies are on my list of those I can watch time and again, together with the firstt three Indiana Jones movies, Romancing the Sone, The Jewel of the Nile the two Quartermain movies and my guilty pleasure, Firewalker.

Now you're speaking my language. Few ever add in Firewalker. Who knew Chuck Norris could do comedy?
