** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
Let's start with what we know: Jay Dyer is a genius. She has done it again with a sudoku so ludicrously clever it almost defies belief. From it's brain-breaking opening to its finishing flourish, this is simply one of the most incredible puzzles of all time.
Play the puzzle at the link below:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Nine cells (one in each row, column and 3x3 box) are “doublers”, and have a value equal to double their digit. Each digit appears in exactly one doubler. The values of cells in a cage sum to the small clue in the top left corner of the cage. Digits may not repeat in a cage (though values may repeat). In row N (for all N from 1 to 9), the values of cells in the pill (read from left to right) give the row and column number of the doubler with the digit N.

Thanks for the solve! You can blame Andrewsarchus for inspiring the idea for this one with one of their puzzles. I'm particularly glad you found and used the trick with the 9s at the end, I was very pleased when I discovered that while setting it.

@@Pulsar77 I completely lucked in to that one. I wanted to place a 7 in box 9, so I wondered briefly if I could prove it wasn't in row 9 of that box. Glanced over at the pill and was like "Okay so a seven in box 9 row 9 breaks that pill...Hang on a second. A 9 here breaks the pill regardless of the 7. Neat."

My jaw literally just dropped when I thought through how to place the first digit, or more specifically the deduction that resolves the first digit. It's just magical. I'm actually glad Simon takes his time to explain the logic in detail because it gives me a chance to get a step or two ahead when I can usually understand the logic as he talks about it. I still usually fall flat soon after that and have to wait for him to catch up (or correct my next logical flaw) so I rarely attempt to solve these in my limited time.

I can just make it through the GAS puzzles at this point, but I was pretty proud that the first thing I considered about this puzzle took Simon 33 minutes to come up with... interestingly about row 3, column 3. Wild admiration, I know I couldn't tackle the whole puzzle, but happy to have had one sensible thought, hah!

My break in was the same, but I got to the 124/248 bit quicker. I think my programmer's brain probably helped me with the indexing. You caught up by spotting a couple of things I'd missed, which caused me to get a bit bogged down in the middle, although I did spot the naked single much earlier. I also spotted the 79 logic, which introduced the end game, and was very nicely worked. I had a good laugh when you pencil marked 1s in the whole of C8. Just thinking about it makes me chuckle. I wonder what Pencil Mark would make of it. The whole idea that the offset pill could open up the puzzle was brilliant, and the way the clues interacted was also very clever. Every clue played its part. Jay is definitely one of the elite setters.

Happy me: Figured out the part at 40:05 by other logic pretty quickly-more quickly than Simon did, iirc. (Though since I used different logic to place that 2 in row 1 column 5, and because my not-great working memory means I forget any part of the logic that isn't written down, I'm doubting my method.) Not-so-happy me: Proceeded to break the puzzle 3+ times. Restarted a couple of times. Undid most of my work, returned here to check every step after that against Simon's work. Between the indexing and the doublers, there's a lot to keep track of. Probably doesn't help that coordinates are written "row#, column#, in x/y axis terms, that's "y, x." Opposite of what I did for so many years in school. -_-;; It's still fun. My working-memory weaknesses aren't as irritating when I'm doing a puzzle, simply because the stakes are low. And there's no deadline. I can take forever and make mistakes. ^_^

@57thorns
@57thorns Год назад
1:03:34 By Simons logic, there is no 7 in the 20 box in box 5. This places the 7 in a domino in box 5, removing (as Simon points out) a space for the 7 in box 8. So I suppose 7 is now place in box 8? Which in turn very obviously make the 56 pair in box 9. And Simon spots a naked 6. and fills outbox 5 completely. That is _definitely_ a Simon point.

Your first deduction about the field with 3 not being allowed to be a doubler was false, but you fixed it with second one, that was correct. In a case where in field with 6 there was 8 or 4, you could have a doubler in field with 3, wish either digit 1 (for 4) or digit 2 (for 8). So, theoretically you can have 1 r5c1, 4 in r5c2 and 8 in r5c3, with a doubler in r5c1. Okay, you discovered it later :)

Simon seems to have rule very soon the possibility that r5c1 can be doubled while reasoning with the wrong values for r5c23 and then deduce at 30:00 that the doubled 5 is in r2c4. Why can't r5c1 be the doubled 2 thus putting the doubled 5 in r4c4? -> Nevermind, it is the need of a doubled digit in c2.

In r5c1, either the 1 is doubled (meaning a 2), or it's a natural 2. Either way, its value is always 2. So the 5 can be placed in row 2 and it needs to be a doubler. Since r5c2 is a 4, the location of the doubled 5 is r2c4.
@myfyrmadocjones
@myfyrmadocjones Год назад
@@AmmoBoks why does it have to be a 1 or 2 though? This puzzle is so hard it was good enough to have been set by Phistomefel!
@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 Год назад
@@myfyrmadocjones There has to be a cell in purple that has value 2, and the doubled 2 in column 2 means it cannot be either a natural 2 (repeating 2) or doubled 1 (repeating doubler) in column 2. So that purple 2 value has to be in r5c1.

Am I wrong, or is 1,2,4 another option for the middle row of box 4? How was that disproven?
@kielblanton
@kielblanton Год назад
Let's try placing it and see what it gives you. The pill (in row 5) is now telling you that a doubled 5 exists in row 1, column 2, which places it on a pill. The pills read the value of the cell, not just the digit, so the pill in row 1 is now telling you a doubled 1 exists in row 5*2. Because row 5 is placing a double 5, it can't reference a cell that's in a pill, because there isn't a 10th row or column in the puzzle. The same logic, for example, could be used to rule 2 and 3 out of R6C3, R7C3, R8C3, and R9C3, because then a doubles 6, 7, 8, or 9 would end up in a pill, which would be referencing a double-digit location.
@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 Год назад
Kiel Blanton gave the reason most people would have given. But since you asked "how was that disproven", Simon managed to come up with a more complicated reason (as his way 🙂). Replay the video from 27:00. Simon's reason wasn't that a doubled 5 causes a problem in a pill, it was that it would mean a second doubler in column 2: the doubled 5, placed in r1c2 by the pill in row 5, and also a doubled 1 that has to appear somewhere in column 2, since we need a cell with value 2 in purple to index the doubler that has to appear somewhere in row 2.

I think I missed something early on; why can't R5C2 be a doubler? I understand that its value has to match the omitted value of the doubler in C3 (so, supposing that a 2 was doubled in C3, we need to put a value 2 in one of the pills, and therefore it has to be R5C2), but why couldn't it be a doubled 1 in that case? (I understand the second proof about why it can't be a doubler, related to shifting all the same pill logic to the left one step, but I don't understand the proof in the absence of that step)
@Trygdesnylter55
@Trygdesnylter55 Год назад
By doubling a digit in R5C2, you’ve removed the opportunity of putting the «undoubled» version of that digit into one of the row positions within the pills. If you then try to double another digit in C2 to replace that digit, you’re essentially recreating that problem for a new digit. Hope that made sense :)
@themorebeer3072
@themorebeer3072 Год назад
If R5C2 was a double 1, then there would be no possible pill pointing at the doubler in R1 as 1, which breaks the rules of the puzzle. Or as Simon put it, you'd have to then have the value 1/2 doubled. Likewise if R5C2 was a doubled 2, no pill could point at the doubler in R2.

Agh much like the previous puzzle with these kinds of index "pills" I again keep trying to make wrong deductions because as much as I'm used to the usual sudoku notation when it's presented in the form "r#c#," when it's a simple ordered pair of two numbers my brain thinks too Cartesian and expects the horizontal coordinate first...
