He wrote this song when he was in his mid teens about his mother who abandoned him when he was a baby. He was holding on to the wishes of meeting her and getting a love he never received
Probably the best male blue-eyed soul singer you will ever hear!!! He does mostly originals, but a lot of incredible classic R&B covers. He is not a one-hit-wonder....he has several US hits, but her doesn't tour as much as he does in the UK, Europe and Australia. I saw him live in Los Angeles and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen. There are many live performances on RU-vid of him. His nickname is "Red" and his real name is Mick Hucknall. He is amazing.
Amazing? Yes. Best blue eyed soul singer? Naw... Marc Broussard, Bobby Caldwell, Michael McDonald, Van Morrison, Bob Seger, Daryl Hall, Righteous Bros, George Michael, Amy Winehouse,...IMO, all better.
@@joelspaulding5964 you're entitled to your own opinion. How much simply Red have you listened to? How many live performances have you seen of him? Just curious.
For a another great singer, this one from Ireland, give Van Morrison's "Into the Mystic" a try. A song than I can truly say can be truly transformative.
Oh my Lord, I forgot how much I loved loved this song! I got internal goose bumps hearing this song and I don’t care if he has red, white, pink or black soul? This Ginger Guy “Simply Got it.” He tore at my heart strings. Bless you. 💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
If you liked this, check out Simply Red. LIVE at Stafford, it is an entire concert, this song is on there, but check the first 10 minutes, the opening, it is so great, Mick is famous worldwide, is nearly 70 years old today and still playing concerts. He is very soulful, and no one can sing better, he is an amazing LIVE performer.
Simply Red have loads of good songs. Check them out. Money's Too Tight to Mention is fantastic (you would love it!), Fairground is good, Stars is good....loads more.
buried wife, family, friends. thank God I lived it, wish I could hold onto it but is what is. Hope to see them all again (got some apologizin' to do, straight up included)
Fellas, the first time I heard Simpy Red's Holding Back The Tears was an episode of Miami Vice. Miami Vice used MTV music to play on their shows. Soulful Cat!!!
Mick Hucknell, lead singer is still doing concerts, including with a symphony orchestra . Still popular as ever and a very nice guy Please react to, Money's too tight to mention Fairground Stars New flame Recent live performances are welcomed!
I interned at a radio station in San Francisco in college and I got to see this band and meet them when they toured with this album. They were phenomenal and very nice. Hit their song "Money's Too Tight (to Mention)" for more funkiness. Mick Hucknall's voice definitely has that blue-eyed soul vibe going on.
One of the best Bands of the 90's .You would love them Something Got Me Started, New Flame, so many. Many children gere today because of their songs....😊💌
I grew up in the seventies and I loved randb, metal, and hip hop but this is one of my favorite songs ever. No matter your age but it hits a little harder at my age lol. Great reaction.
He had several top 10 hits all over the world, yes … “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” from him is legendary, before every time he sing it, he thanks “the Late Teddy Pendergrass” for the Song., Please ….listen to his version.
Hi Guys. Thanks for another great video/reaction. Another good Simply Red song to check out (they have a few) is "Money's too tight to mention". As for Dione Warwick - I love her, just a few of her songs you might want to check out are: Heartbreaker, Walk on by, Do you know the way to San Jose?, I'll never fall in love again and I'll never love this way again.
Simply Red had at least 10 songs in the UK Top 10. "Holding Back the Years" didn't win the GRAMMY, but it did win ASCAP Pop Music Awards for Most Performed Song, which is pretty cool.
This track is an all-time classic, I will never get tired of it. I loved your conversation about aging, but for real, one of the things I like about your channel is seeing people around my age holding it down on RU-vid. That means a lot. And Olli, I hope you appreciate your good genes!
It is a group- please do not forget that, all band members are playing characters in this video. Check out their first single Money Too Tight To Mention. So relevant today in the UK.
Stars was a massive hit, but Picture Book is one of the most amazing albums, my favorite of 1985, maybe? My most listened to of that year, for sure. I was 12 when it came out.. bought it on cassette tape.. repeat rewind, all year long..
This was really great! Simply Red's sound is so classy. Those scenes of castles in Ireland were awesome. You guys mentioned Dion Warwick songs and Luther Vandross, that was very cool to find out. I remember hearing that Barry Gibb from the Bee Gees wrote the song "Heart Breaker" specifically for her. She turned it down a few times, having already recorded "Walk On By". She didn't want her image to appear to be too sad and gloomy. She later changed her mind and decided to record it, it was a Big hit for her. Much love to you guys. Love your channel.
You also need to listen to AL Stewart Year of the Cat. He's got a smooth voice, too. Thanks for this reaction. I've always loved this song and his amazing voice. ❤
Some call it blue-eyed soul. To me, soul is music which touches your very core and moves you emotionally. Saw them live in Toronto and they were excellent. The have a deep catalogue - Money's Too Tight to Mention.
Fantastic song. I was a teen in the 80s - born 1970, and I remember this song getting a lot of airplay. Gives me the chills. But they didn't really have many hits that I can remember, other than that cover you mentioned. And I know what you guys are talking about with the age thing - it's the grays, which I'm fighting, too. My hair is more salt than pepper these days. Also, go Os!
Dionne is GREAT, I am an old white dude and I get teared up every time I listen to her. Look into her family's history and you may be surprised. In the 60s she was on fire. I love her Theme From the Valley of the Dolls. 🕊💖🎸
I really appreciate how you guys feature the video instead of dominating the song. Much thanks from an old Retired teacher. If you want some Atlanta Funk, try Mother’s Finest… “Baby Love” thank you!!!
Oh no no no no, Simply Red has many wonderful albums to dive into. This song comes from their first album, Picture Book. Not a bad song on the whole album, but my favorite from that album is "Sad Old Red". It's a smooth jazzy riff. Definitely worth checking out.
Hardly a one hit wonder😊 A few more to check out... Stars If You Don't Know Me By Now Something Got Me Started The Right Thing A New Flame You've Got It Enough I highly recommend checking out live performances of any of these songs from the 1992 A Starry Night concert in Hamburg, Germany. His vocals as well.as the entire band will blow you away!!!
😍😍😍What I heard is that they were called Red in the beginning. But when people asked about the band-name and they said "Red" - they got "what!?" - Just "Simply red", one of the bandmembers said... And there you go! 🙂More, please! Thanks guys!
I was watching people reacting to this song and alot of them thought that he (Mick Hucknal) was a black man because of his soul voice. But he was a totaly white irish guy with red hair. One thing is clear he is a fxxxxxx good singer. I saw him live in Germany Würzbug twice and I have to tell you guys he can sing. He was at least as good as on the album. This was realy super good.
I saw Dionne perform at a Spinners concert in 1974, I think it was...they did the song "Then Came You". This old white boy's favorite group of all time is The Spinners, Phillipe Wynne is my all time favorite singer and their deep cuts are the best they could've had so many more radio hits. The man behind them was producer Thom Bell the creator of that Philadelphia Soul, to me better than even Motown...RIP Thom Bell, 2022.
