So excited that I found this video on weaving a striped rug on a heddle loom! You answered all of my questions in this one 22 minute video that I have been searching all over the internet for almost a month! Now I can finally get the right stuff and get started on my first rug. You don’t know how happy I am to find you. My one stop shop, so to speak. It’s like you read my mind down to a tee. I have felt pretty lost searching online wondering if what I have in my mind for my first ridged heddle loom rug was ever gonna happen without me seeking out someone that knows how to weave. But, here you are and I couldn’t be more thrilled! Can’t wait to see what else you have out there. Thank you!! Thank you!! Thank you!!

You are so much fun! Thank you so much for including the information about the big box store alternatives. I priced it out using your yarn and yikes! I have both a 12 and a 5 heddle, but I think I’ll use the 5 because it will be less confusing to warp. Between sewing, knitting, and weaving I have too many projects going, but I can’t wait to start on this.

Fun is such a nice complement. Yeah, quality rug yarns can be spendy. They will last forever, but you may not need forever. I try and go deep with materials.

I have your book weaving made easy and I want to make the rug. When warping you say to thread a slot then skip the next hole and slot and thread the next hole, etc. my question is do you still sley the reed removing one thread from the slot and putting it into the hole ? Also I ordered a 12.5 dent reed for my 32" loom and they sent me the wrong one a 15 dent reed. I will still get a 12.5 dent reed but should I keep this 15 dent? I want to make a table runner using 8/2 unmercized cotton should I use this reed? I am still confused as to figuring out sett, what it means to my project and what reed should be used. Thank you so much. I also have your new book. Love your projects and videos. Thank you.
@Yarnworker

This is the final threading sequence you want to end up with. If you are using the direct method you will want to thread a slot and then skip two slots, across the weaving width. Then pack the beam and move the threads about to get the order you want. You will sometimes be moving slots out of the slot they are in and into another slot and you may get some crossed threads behind the hedddle and have to clear the shed by placing a stick between the plain weave shed behind the heddle and pushing the crosses over the back beam. You can also use a 5-dent heddle and get almost the same results.

Rugs in general don't have to be wet finished before using, unlike scarves, towels, and other household textiles and garments that need a nice spa treatment in order to settle the yarns into place and make the fabric supple.

I'm thinking that there may be yarns in the Briggs and Little range that would work for rugs. They are a Canadian supplier from New Brunswick who have been making yarns for durability for over 150 years.

I am new to rigid heddle loom and rug making. I like the rug you have in the introduction to the video. How do I go about deciding on how many rows for each yarn color, repeats, etc. and then figuring how many repeat patterns I will have in a completed rug, so that the pattern is equal from one end to the other? I want to make one like yours, your pattern.
@Yarnworker
@Yarnworker 5 лет назад
The details for making the rug are in my book "Weaving Made Easy". If you measure your first color repeat of each stripe as a baseline and then weave each repeat that same length they will look balanced. I measure on the loom with the fabric under moderate tension.

I am wanting to try weaving. I know nothing about it and don’t have a clue what kind of loom to purchase. I know I don’t want a kids loom and would like something that is at least 24 inches of weaving space. I would like to make rugs and towels. Could you advise me on a good starter loom. Not one that I will outgrow really quickly

For me the rigid-heddle loom ticks all those boxes. Perhaps a good place to start is to take my free course Why This Loom. I briefly talk about various loom options and then explain why the rigid-heddle loom is loom of choice. www.yarnworkerschool.com/courses/get-to-know-the-rigid-heddle-loom

I have just made a rug using cotton as the warp with a 7.5 reed and a thick rug wool for the weft. Although the edges were neat, the further I carried on with the rug it became a struggle to get the reed to beat the weave as the warp became misaligned - is this to do with using the wrong sett? Help? For info I made a second rug with the same 7.5 reed and materials threading a slot and hole then missing a slot and hole then threading a slot and hole repeat...and the same thing happened.
@Yarnworker
@Yarnworker 5 лет назад
This could be caused by a number of issues and it could be sett related, but I think I that more to selvedge management. If you are getting take up you want to apply the three rule system--maintain an appropriate weft angle or bubble, advance often, and weight selvedges if necessary. yarnworker.com/geeking-out-on-the-details-wonky-edges/ With rugs it is sometimes necessary to use a temple to keep your warp width. Sett relates more to how you want your rug to look, if you are trying to get the look where you only see the weft and that isn’t happening then you do need either a more open sett or a thiner weft.

I looked up the Bernat blanket yarn on line and it doesn't seem to have plys to unravel, am I mistaken. Also how would I finish the rug if I didn't want fringe? I just finished a table runner, instead of a yarn header I wove about 1 1/2 inches of tread. After taking it off the loom I then sewed a zig zag stitch and turned the piece woven with thread underneath and whip stitched it. Would that work with a rug?
@Yarnworker
@Yarnworker 5 лет назад
With that particular yarn, you may need to tail tuck. It is so squishy that I think it won’t show much of a bump. The technique you mention would work with a rug, but it might not be as sturdy as you would like. Another way to finish, is to weave a couple of inches on either end with doubled ends of cotton carpet warp. Then fold it over and stitch it like a hem. You can paint on a bit of Elmer's glue to make it even more sturdy. Th glue trick is something I learned from a fellow in town who weaves rag rugs.

Not silly at all. Rugs are the one exception to the rule and they don't have to be washed before use.

I love squishing yarn! Have you tried spinning yarn for a rug? I have a ton of wool to spin up that is rather corse and I am curious if it would work. Great video.
@LizGipson
@LizGipson 6 лет назад
Spinning for rugs is a great way to use up wools on the toothy end of the spectrum. I talked about this a little in one of my Knitty columns. knitty.com/ISSUEdf17/FEATdf17GW/FEATdf17GW.php When spinning for rugs, I spin toothy wools as bulky singles with low twist.

Hi, thanks so much for your great video. I am wanting to create a 'patchwork' style rug, probably 2 or 3 widths joined together. Have you ever done this and any idea how I would join the lengths together.
@Yarnworker
@Yarnworker 4 года назад
I have not done this myself, but if I were tackling it, I would consider an invisible join because it would not add any additional bulk at the join. That said, I’m a fan of visible seams such as lacing or the baseball stitch because they become part of the design and you don’t really worry about them being invisable. I don’t think they would provide that much extra bulk to be a tripping hazard. If you can get your hands on a finishing book such as "Finishing Touches fo the Handweaver" by Virginia West or "Compendium of Finishing Techniques" by Naomi McEneely they will have a number of options or you could google the options I’ve listed and probably come up with some ideas.

Hemstitching is often not secure enough to keep all that tightly packed yarn in place. Knotting is better.

In most case if you are packing the weft firmly and using a supplemental beater, then your weft yarn is too thick for your sett or vice versa your sett is too close for your weft.

@Yarnworker

Sett is the density of the warp. So an 8 sett is one in which you have 8 ends per inch. 8/4 is a reading of the county system. You can learn more about that in either of my books or check out this video I produced for The Woolery years ago. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JZtXXtHfdZw.html

Can you weave a rug with a simple loom? I don't have a rigid heddle loom...
@Yarnworker
@Yarnworker 6 лет назад
You can weave a rug on any loom it just depends on what kind of rug you are going for--the more consistent tension the sturdier the rug. There are many off loom techniques used to make rugs and any simple frame would also work. Start googling and I bet you will find something that will work for you.

Stephanie Thomas not necessarily, it’s a personal choice. Just be careful about securing the rug so it doesn’t slip when you get in and out of the tub.
