I'm on my first viewing of this series. I've been playing acoustic guitar for 25 years. I stopped what I was doing to learn the lyrics to this because this arrangement is so sweet and wonderful that I had to learn it immediately. Levy's reaction/acting brings me to tears. So does the song. I adore this.
@@arineemickle that’s how it works so much of the time with Emmy’s and Oscar’s. When they feel someone got snubbed they get it years later. Pacino should have won for godfather 2 but got it for scent of a woman. Paul Newman deserved oscar for the hustler but it got for color of money! James gandolfini should have hot emmy for it every year for sopranos!
Well said. I was impressed that he could transition from feeling anxious to surprised to touched to proud and finally loved so effortlessly and convincingly only using the facial expressions.
I cannot praise this scene enough. Patrick is saying "I love you" through music and David, though initially reluctant, is finally able to say, "I believe you."
I never paid attention to the lyrics of this song before. This scene just knocked me out... Moira actually being maternal, dabbing her eyes, politely resenting the Schitt's interruption, touching David's arm tenderly... so many micro-moments that all combine to make a perfectly unexpected treasure, in one of my favorite shows. Well done. 👍 Perfect example of a first-rate ensemble cast.
So well said. You interpret it perfectly. It’s such a rich scene, beautifully nuanced by the expressions of the characters. I had never listened to the lyrics of the song before either and it was like hearing it for the first time. In the context of David’s and Patrick’s relationship, the lyrics are magnified and with it the delicate emotions of the pair, Moira and the crowd. Masterfully done.
Dan Levy said in many interviews that Catherine O’Hara cried through all the takes and couldn’t stop crying, so they actually had a film it a little differently. The only evidence of her crying is so tiny dabs you see when the camera is behind her.
Same! It was always just a pop song. Then somebody makes it acoustic, and changes the world just a little bit. I heard this scene described as a "watershed moment" for the representation of the LGBTQ community on TV, and it made perfect sense. THIS is what people deserve-EQUAL treatment. Not "in spite of" or "because of" their homosexuality. The fact that they're gay doesn't even play a part in the messaging . The only message is LOVE, and it's really beautiful.
Apparently she cried through the whole scene when they filmed it. You can actually see her dabbing her eyes with a tissue right after the shot cuts from Roland & Jocelyn.
That moment, a mother reassuring her son and supporting him. It's a wonderful piece of storytelling in a tiny gesture. That brief touch does more to show how much she loves him than any speech they could've written. Then again, maybe I'm reading too much into it 🙂
Everything about that moment is perfect. The look on her face that says "This is beautiful", her eyes that convey the same message, the touch on the arm to reassure, and you can just barely make out that she mouths "My God". All of that makes her acting in this scene brilliant. And to be honest she probably wasn't acting. She has been around the Levy family for years and I am sure that her bond with that family and Dan in particular fueled her feelings in this scene. As someone said she cried through the whole thing (Which you can see her wipe her tears in the foreground on one of the camera angles). Just a brilliant and powerful scene.
deeshmond I see what you mean, but it’s also very much about gay relationships, which is refreshing and very important. So much subtle homophobia in this thread, it’s horrible to see.
The beauty in this show cannot even be expressed in words. Love is naturalised in all its wonderful forms and I feel like this show is so one of a kind just because of this.
Moira’s almost (almost) the best part of this. This is such a mom moment for her, she’s so happy for David, not in a “your man could sing, good show-business” way but a “my sons getting serenaded by the love of his life, David I’m so happy for you” way. So emotional
I only know a little if the show. But Catherine O’Hara’s line before the song “let me know if I should pull the fire alarm” like she’s so embarrassed. And then he starts singing and you see her reaction in her eyes and face. All of the performances are exceptional, but that moment where her character realizes this is special is amazing.
This episode really took me by surprise. Thank God I was alone because I had a mini breakdown listening to it. So poignant and romantic. I'd always hoped to be serenaded by someone like Patrick. So beautiful! Great job Dan and Noah! "Simply the Best".
I cried when I realized Patrick insisted on throwing the karaoke just so he could sing for his special man. I wish I could hear this song for the first time over and over again.
I really love Dan and Noah's storylines especially the last episode of season 5. I'm hearing rumors that Dan feels it's time to end the show but I think it could go on a little bit longer. Eugene said "it will end when it ends." I'm going to be sad when it ends because I've been such a big fan of Eugene's, since his and Catherine's time on SCTV, and I appreciate that Dan and the rest of the Levy clan are painting the entire LGBTQ community as well as the pansexual community in such a positive light. It's going to be hard for me to find something to watch on Tuesday nights that's as positive as Schitt's Creek is.
I don’t know another scene in a show that depicts to an audience the feeling of true love. It’s one of the most touching scenes I’ve watched in a show in all my years.
I love this especially watching David! Like him being shocked and like not seeming like he feels like he deserves it and feeling uncomfortable, then slowly warming up and being genuinely happy. Loved it
The magic has not worn off. Thank you, Dan Levy, for inspiring this (and all of Schitt's Creek). Thank you, Noah Reid for this gorgeous rendition and performance.
Knocks me over each and every time. 🥲❤Daniel Levy heard Tina’s version in a bar one night and said, “This. THIS is what I want someone to feel about me one day.” Wrote it into the show. 💗
Daniel Levy doesn't say a word and convays so much emotion. You know exactly what David is thinking without him having to vocalize a word. Absolutly brilliant work.
Patrick's last glance at David as well, at the end when he just finishes singing and David smiles back. That alone says so much. This is phenomenal acting, phenomenal directing, and singing quality that is simply the best. WOWOWOW schitts has me crying. literally.
What makes this such an amazing testament to equality if the fact that their homosexuality is IGNORED. No focus on the fact that it's two men. Just focus on the LOVE. Just brilliant.
In an interview with Dan Levy, he said that was intentional of his show. To be set in a world where there isn't any homophobia, even though it's a small country town where you'd expect it. Any gender can couple together, and everyone else would just be like 'cool' and treat it like any other. If you watch the series again, with this in mind you notice- yeah, no one ever does treat it like it's anything out of the ordinary. It's refreshing to have a gay relationship portrayed on TV, where one of the storylines isn't persecution and fear ❤
One of my favorite parts of this scene is how Moira looks at David, as Patrick professes his love to him thru song. As a parent it is the me of my great hopes that my children can find someone who sees them for who they are and loves them for who they are. Moria look of maternal pride expresses this.
At first I thought this scene was going to be corny. But I was genuinely shocked at the sincere beauty of this scene. Even though it’s male to male, (nothing wrong with that at all) this song fits in any scenario and that’s what makes it so beautiful. I think about all the amazing things my girlfriend does for myself and our 3 year old and I can’t help but have a smile on my face. Very underestimated scene in film and television too. This is honestly in my top 5 of most incredible and really hit close to home scenes. Well done!
Having gay representation like this is filling my heart to the point of tears and I can’t thank the writers producers actors and everyone else involved w Schitt’s Creek enough for the beautiful gay moments you have shown 😭 we just want love at its best.
The fact that the "gay" aspect takes a backseat to the "love" aspect is what makes it so special. The show doesn't feel the need to focus on their homosexuality, so these beautiful moments aren't "because of" OR "in spite of" their sexuality. It's Just Love, it's TRULY equal treatment. And I think that it's one of the most significant things to ever happen to the representation of LGBTQ in Hollywood, it's a much-needed paradigm shift. Imagine a world in which we DEFAULT to just treating everybody equal.
@@ianpritchett103 This, is exactly what I have been trying to say!!! They just show love!!! Its not focused on the fact that these two people happen to identify as male, but just on the simple fact that they love each other!!! and I hope one day we will live in a world like that.
I had actually stopped watching this show in the middle of last season. (just busy and stuff). After I watched this clip, I had to power through all the episodes to find out what lead to this scene. It's rare that any show can reach this level of intimacy/honesty. This was not only Patrick's singing, but also the change in David's expression as he realized what this was to Moira briefly putting her hand on his arm. Brilliant.
Imagine if somebody told you, during the first episode of this show, that it would be able to deliver a scene with this much genuine emotion. This show is absolutely brilliant.
This scene seals their amazing chemistry - I shed tears from the start of the song. Absolutely mesmerised and beautiful - my dream of being serenaded like this. I can’t stop listening to this rendition.... ❤️
Honestly, David’s reaction contributes to the likeliness of this genius scene. It wouldn’t have the same impact if David wasn’t shown to be as serenaded as we all were.
I love that this is one of the first and only times David wears colour, just as it's the first time he really let's his guard down, and allows himself to be serenaded in public. He just looks so warm and loved, and omg I fell in love with Patrick, on David's behalf, in that scene ☺
Not me. I was having an "allergy attack" or slicing onions. No honestly, it was probably one of the most beautiful scenes and cover of a song that I have ever witnessed. I am a heterosexual guy but, just to see the love between 2 human beings and the serenade was amazing!
I think Patrick telling David that he's "Simply The Best" when he's so used to being rejected and overlooked in his relationships is just another layer that makes this scene so poignant and meaningful. Finally, David's found someone who will always put him first and openly declares that he's "better than all the rest". Ahh, be still my heart. Too many feels!
I can feel the love between Patrick and David emanating from the screen every time I watch this episode as well as David realising that this thing between him and Patrick could be the real deal. I think that the fact that there is no homophobia or bigotry in Schitt's Creek is wonderful and that is why it means so much to LGBTQAI+ people and their allies. There never needed to be an angsty episode where people were commenting on David's Pan-sexuality, Patrick being Gay, Jake being Polyamorous (although I suspect that Jake is a Sexual Hedonist rather than Poly) or Ronnie being a Lesbian. Everyone just accepts everyone for who they are, and wouldn't that be a wonderful world to live in?
Thanks for writing this! Even though I was aware of all of these things happening, I was never stuck on any of it. Or shocked. It was all so seamless and artfully done as just life as we live it. Dan Levy, cast, writers and crew need to be applauded for this masterpiece of the art of just living.
This scene got me into the music of Noah Reid, which is fantastic. Reminds me a bit of David Gray. What a wonderful scene and series. It’s been a ray of light this tough year of 2020.
I’m rewatching this show from the start. I’m on season 1 and can’t wait to get to the Patrick scenes. The show gets better and better and better. Sad it’s ended.
As someone who rarely gets emotional, wow this scene makes me cry every time 😭 Patrick’s adoring and passionate performance, David’s initial resistance and slowly letting down his guard when he realized how loved he is for the first time, Moira for once showing quiet support for her child, the town people’s acceptance without hesitation...so powerful, so beautiful.
@@mamijot69 hi, I'm not the person who wrote that, but saying "one day" doesn't mean one day. It means "some day." Like saying, "I hope I meet a great boyfriend one day!"
They are both so good, and they are both so different. I am a gay man, recently married. I watched this entire series with my mom, who struggled through dealing with my homosexuality and marrying my husband. She fell in love with this show, (how could you not) and this scene, as said many times before which is just all about love, with no labels, and seeing Moira, Davids mom so touched by the love that Patrick has for her son, was an important scene for us to sit through. Schitts Creek is a blessing.
I love this scene - it absolutely took my breath away when I first saw it, and it's still magical after watching many times. David is so swept off his feet emotionally here. It's so beautiful. And also, when he lip sync's the original back to Patrick a few episodes later, Patrick is completely swept off his feet in return. This show is so well done, through and through.
Anyone notice the scene with Catherine O'Hara with the camera behind her focused on Noah, so the foreground is blurred, that she grabs a tissue and wipes her eyes. Pretty sure that was a genuine moment caught on camera.
JoannC830 start at about the 1:01 mark where the camera is facing Catherine, Chris and Jennifer’s characters. Then as soon as that scene changes to the camera behind Catherine & Dan ) blurred foreground with it focused on Noah, that’s when you see Catherine reach to her right grab a tissue and wipe her eyes
I've literally watched this scene 100 times and it hits me harder every time. Schitt's Creek has literally made me realize how important every single person is, despite their sexuality. I have so much more respect for gay people and the LGBTQ+ community as a whole. :)
This is so beautiful. I love this show and these characters are so real. Each one is genuine and striving to be better in their own way. I especially love David, I want to protect him, go shopping with him and be his best friend. Kudos to the Levy's for such amazing work!
I want the full recording of this! sooooo good. And BOTH of their lil look exchanges are sooooo Amazing in this and show how talented they are. love love LOVE
I still think one of the most amazing things about this scene is how selfless Moira was for just a moment. She knew it was about someone else, and took the back-seat straight away.
Golf Dewd, I wish I could go to one of Noah Reid’s concerts, but there aren’t any in my area. They sell out quickly, too. A couple have been moved to larger venues.
I call you when I need you, my heart's on fire You come to me, wild and wired You come to me, give me everything I need Give me a life time of promises and a world of dreams Speak the language of love like you know what it means And it can't be wrong Take my heart and make it strong, babe You're simply the best Better than all the rest Better than anyone Anyone I ever met
I love this scene! I love Patrick! I love how human David finally is here! I love LOVE Moira!!! But, I love the comments below! I love that people feel this moment, its devotion, love and its magic! I love what it shares and the example it makes! I love everything about this! It's - Simply...THE BEST!!!! xx
We could all be so lucky to have a wonderful boyfriend like Patrick sing us a heartfelt serenade like that. It was truly a thing of beauty. He hit it. Great cover Mr. Noah Reid!
