SIMPLY...WOW! My first genuine German Christmas market (Berlin)- and what a market to start with.

My local Christmas market may sell curry bratwurst, gluhwine and nick-nacks, but surely it can't compete with the real thing? This was my first visit to a genuine German Christmas market, and in some ways I was very impressed, and in some ways I was let down. The next time I'm in Berlin I'll try another Christmas market.

When Germany was still divided I spend a Christmas with relatives in Berlin, it must have been 1982 or 83, and I visited two Christmas Markets, the one in West Berlin and the one in the East. The one in the West was similar to the one you've been to, very commercialised, but the one in the East was completely different and brought back memories of my childhood. The Market was near the Alexander Platz and yes, there were a few rides but nothing like you've experienced. The smells were just amazing. They had one area with nothing but food stalls selling foods from all corners of the Warsaw Pact states. I reckon I gained a few pounds that day.

Another cosy little adventure! Thanks, mate! Never ceases to amaze me how when travelling you trawl through abandoned streets searching for this or that attraction, when you suddenly turn a corner and everyone's there and it's absolutely packed! Then you leave following the slipstream of other guest and in two minutes you're once again alone in an empty semi-dodgy side street. 😂

Seems to be more like a fun fair than a real traditional Christmas market. You should probably visit a smaller town with less tourists to get the real feeling of Christmas markets here in Germany.

Oh, Scott! I'm disappointed in you with this one. There are so many much nicer markets in the center of Berlin. And nearby there are good markets in Spandau and Potsdam, too. I took in 6 or 7 markets this past weekend, and they all looked better than this one. And I can't imagine any place in Berlin that you can't get closer to by public transport!

Hey Scott, a brilliant video! I was a little uneasy at the outset, with your feelings of uncertainty as you left some of those modern Berlin railway stations. With not quite knowing where you were after leaving the station. Never feel concern about getting lost, as all of us loyal Planes, Trains, Everything subscribers are willing to get lost with you. And when it comes to maps, just check the spelling, they are just spam backwards. Big thumbs up to that sausage on a roll. (Krakow Sausage) Cooee, it blew me away! Well done, great German Winter Market outing!

Hey Scott Having been to a number of Christmas markets across northern Germany, since my daughter moved to Hannover 15 years ago, I have found that many have deteriorated over the years. Gone have the handmade wooden toys and they seem saturated with imported garbage - like the ones in London. My favourite is the market in Celle (Lower Saxony). It still retains that traditional feel and is a bit more cozy than the larger markets. Of course, the big attraction is the food. I’m now teetotal and don’t eat pork, but there’s still plenty to scoff and drink!

Try Hamburg Christmas market. Father Christmas comes over above you at the Rathaus and speaks to the kids in German. There is a Christmas parade twice a day at the weekend at the lake right next to the Rathaus (town hall). You can also go on a day trip to Lubeck.

If you wanted other Scottish links, Augsburg in Bavaria is twinned with Inverness- a city about one tenth of Augsburg's size by population - and it has a Christmas Market - usually around the Rahthaus Platz. Glasgow is twinned with Nurnburg - perhaps similar sizes by population, and there is a scottish stall at Nurnburg's Christmas or Weinachts Markt.

My only German Christmas market was in Cologne about 25 years ago and I thought it was special but compared to the Berlin market Cologne was tiny. From what I remember the market in Cologne sold Glühwein and food but also gifts that expect from a market, gingerbread, wooden houses, beer mugs, etc.

Another great adventure as always! That looked like less of a market and more of a funfair though. Alexanderplatz and Charlottenburg are better bets, though the former is usually completely rammed! Charlottenburg is a little further out but easy enough to get to and the palace makes a really nicely illuminated backdrop.

That so-called Christmas market looked exactly like the one in Edinburgh! Full of overpriced tat, full-to-bursting rubbish bins, food and drink stalls and fairground rides. I visited the market in Nuremberg a number of years ago - 18 months after the Berlin Wall came down - and it really was a genuine Christmas market, with stalls selling handmade wooden gifts and decorations, without any fairground rides. You’ll have to go elsewhere for the real thing, I think!

That seems like a fun fair with Glühwein, not really a christmas market. So the atmosphere is more about entertainment and less about christmas and "gemütlichkeit". The best ones you'll find in smaller towns anyways, I believe. With the one in Goslar still being my favorite. The local horse meat bratwurst, being a must try.

I'm from the south of Germany, and I have to say, our Christmas markets are way different. The one you went to is more like a funfair, with the normal funfair food booths made up in a Christmas-y style. That's not how I know Christmas markets. Ours have some rides for the kids but very few and very simple ones. There are food booths too, but most booths are selling something related to Christmas, be they decorations or Lebkuchen or jumpers or knick-knacks. It might be something worth experiencing as well - maybe next year? ;)

You did better for food than I did. When visiting the Christmas Market at Manchester on Saturday I was hoping to find a place that sold Currywurst (blame Steve Marsh for making me crave that). Plenty of food stalls selling different foods (not all German) and a lot of places selling alcohol, but no sign of any sausages. It was raining, time was short, and a pro Palestine demonstration getting ever closer as I walked around; I decided to give up 😂

Not happy with that lonely rather poorly lit road that you had to walk along, but you got there in the end for some welcome food! That really was a rubbish "market". It was a fun fair. 😂 A real Christmas market can be found in Birmingham. With store holders coming especially from all over Europe there is a huge array of proper stalls , some selling food but most selling stuff that can be given as presents or used as Christmas decorations. Right outside Birmingham New Street station and the massive Bullring shopping complex with indoor and yet more outdoor, all year round outdoor market stalls. One of your most deluded videos Scott - who do you keep trying to convince yourself and us that it was a "genuine" Christmas market when it was obviously just a funfair? And couldn't you have found one that was less than 2.5 miles the other side of a dodgy housing estate from the nearest station? Highlight though was the soundtrack with the tinkly tune so desperate to turn into "Let it Snow" only to veer away at the last moment for copyright reasons.
