I saw the simpsons movie in theaters. I remember vividly when doctor nick died, let out the aching “bye everybody” easily 3 dozen people responded with “bye doctor nick.”
In World of Warcraft, I created a human priest named DrNick. I'd always greet my party/raid with "Hi everybody!" And without fail, at least one person will say, "Hi DrNick!" Always made my day.
To be fair, most quacks do tend to be known through their first name, especially those with their own shows. I can think of two nationally-known examples in real life, actually.
@@Vividersnake well, in older seasons Barney has some episodes about him, he even was talented (film director, singer, jazz dancer) he was recurring in Homer's life and around Springfield. In later seasons he Made less important appearences, he returned to alcoholism and mostly only appears to make 2 jokes about alcohol.
Manolo Pérez oh wow, that sucks. I am new to the show and I really like Barney. It’s going to be sad to see him go from singer, film director, etc, to just an alcoholic.
@@manoloperez8985 If I remember right he was originally supposed to be Homer's best friend and neighbor with his role being gradually reduced. So it would definitely be a interesting retrospective to see how they phased him out
It never occurred to me until now just how perfect Dr Nick is as a doctor in the historical settings. It’s actually pretty accurate to what doctors were really like hundreds of years ago.
* gasp * "that's monstrous, I've never heard of anything so negligent before in my entire life, I refuse to have any part in it" "Can you at least recommend me a doctor who will?"
Nick: "And remember...... If you're not sure about something rub it against a piece of paper. If the paper turns clear, it's your window to weight gain!!!!"
@@gennybaratta2460 Or it could be that people are drawn to other people who reflect their image? Either way Milhouse was never going to escape from that big round nose.
Current Rankings of the “Most Dangerous” Simpsons Histories Characters 1. Kang and Kodos 2. Fat Tony 3. Dr. Nick (he might've killed more people than Fat Tony, though) 4. Krusty the Clown 5. Lionel Hutz 6. Otto 7. Troy McClure 8. Helen Lovejoy 9. “Just Stamp the Ticket” Man 10. Nelson Muntz 11. Mrs. Krabappel 12. Hans Moleman
@@JustDandyGuy That was technically a Simpsons Mysteries not a Simpsons Histories... Although I'd personally rate him above Krusty and probably above Dr Nick too but not above Fat Tony
He didn't. H appears in several episodes after that and it was eventually confirmed by Al Jean that the character had not been killed off as many had thought.
Dr. Fit is actually a bad name, he's a charlatan working in the Amarillo Tx area, and he was banned from the local hospital after trying to treat a patient with cancer by feeding them with the milk of a artificially cancerous cow
I do really like Dr Nick in the Homers Triple Bypass episode, he seems so human by the end, yet is still shown to be the same old “Dr Nick” when Mr McGreg appears at the end.
Id be interested in seeing a history of Disco Stu. Ive only fairly recently started watching the show in release order, and I was really surprised by how late he was introduced. He always seemed like such a staple of the show when I was growing up but he really, really wasn't
He wasn't? Hrm, I thought he was too. Though I don't remember him being much more than a one-note character, resembling someone stuck in the past. Come to think of it, I remember a lot of disco jokes when I was growing up in the 90s. If you were hitting your teens in the 70s, I'd imagine you were exposed to a lot of it, so they're kinda like the equivalent of jokes about rap-rock and nu-metal today. Wake me up inside (CANT WAKE UP)
I think dr. Nick did try to get his education, but failed. And because he's a bit simple minded he doesn't see the harm he does. He's dangerous, but totally unintentionally.
Classic simpsons feels like everyone does everything unintentionally. They all have that thousand-yard stare like they're never really sure what's going on.
Smithers would be a REALLY interesting character from a historical perspective. Because it's not so much that continuity changed him; it's that the public perception of gay men changed him.
for sure. it’s really interesting how he was dealt with even outside of the show, too. i know a lot of the crew used to say he was ‘ burnsexual’ before they could explicitly state he was gay, and there were articles debating it and such. super fascinating stuff :0
I personally see Dr. Nick as someone who REALLY wanted to be a doctor and REALLY loves being a doctor, so much in fact that he just skipped over the boring technical stuff.
I kinda want a history on Lenny and Carl. They started out as just the status quo but recent seasons seem to be trying to give them depth eg that whole iceland episode with carl
I'd like to see a Simpsons Histories of Dr. Hibbert - perhaps the most prominent secondary character who still hasn't had his own episode. Good work as usual on this one.
The Van Houtens, please! When I was a kid, I had always wanted to see more of them (mostly because they had cool blue hair, and I always felt sorry for the mom and dad for being sad all the time xD).
Chief Wiggum would be a great Simpsons Histories, I know it'd be a large video but he's arguably gone a bigger dumb down than Homer and Barney combined
I do really like the joke of his most prestigious title being malpractice defendant. It's a quick, dumb, hilarious visual gag and it's the sort of thing that modern Simpsons tends to get wrong. Just slap it in there, then DELIVER JOKES AROUND IT.
I used to love Dr. Nick. He's always so happy, and I do appreciate the angle that he's a crook who loves his half-assed work and sometimes shows true devotion when no-one else will.
Hi, Mr TheRealJims, Just wanted to say I have passed on your channel to many Simpsons friends of mine and we all enjoy your content. Keep it up! P.s. - Pixar Perfect: Cars 3, when? ;)
I wonder why they just sort of trailed off with his catchphrase, people used to respond with "Hi dr. Nick" all the time. It would be kind of interesting if they could give Dr Nick and Dr Hibbert their own episode. Since Dr. Hibbert seems to have taken on Dr Nick's roll, in lampooning the American Financial medical system; Dr Nick could take on a new role of being greatly incompetent, but actually caring how the patients heal from a life changing illness.
I love seeing Dr. Nick when he does his catchphrase. I didn't know he said it that many times on the show. I must applaud you for your dedication on this great series as you do research for each of your videos.
I loved this video; I just started watching The Simpsons last year but Nick quickly became my favorite character from the show and one of my favorite characters, period. I like that he’s not given much of a background to go by, and like you said, not EVERY character needs to be fleshed out. It’s simply more fun for him to just be a recurring character that is consistently hilarious rather than someone given a lot of thought to. I’m usually drawn to characters that have or insinuate a lot of background, so it’s refreshing for me to like Nick, who’s never been super serious in a dramatic way, only in an occasionally morbid one. Thank you for the great video.
I love Dr Nick. Always one of my favorites. I always thought of him as Arab (with a changed name for marketing purposes) because he says "everybody" exactly how my Jordanian friend says it. Great video! It's good to see Dr Nick get a little attention.
Let's pray that the Simpsons movie and all episodes after are just a dream sequence. When the dream is over the show would be funny again and not trying to be "trendy"
“Hi Everybody” “Hi Dr. Nick!” Classic! Always happy when this guy makes an appearance. Thank you for making this video! He was terrific in Homer’s Triple Bypass, King size Homer, and The Springfield files!
"I can prescribe ANYTHING you want, baby..." I do agree with you on Dr. Nick losing out to Hibbert, but I also think Nick's whole thing being a catchphrase and the fact that he's a cheap gamble meant that a little of him went a long way, although I do think that HOMR thing where Moe just becomes a surgeon out of nowhere could have been funnier if it went anywhere beyond just having Moe be a surgeon for the one gag. They could have easily had Dr. Nick do the same thing and all that would have been really different would have been the "That's right, I'm a surgeon" business card joke. It would have been a lot better had Hibbert remained competent with the usual thing where he laughs at inappropriate moments.
I love these. I've never really stopped and thought about these minor characters in-depth before. For the next episode, I'd love to see you take on Mr. Burns.
I stopped watching the Simpson around the mid 2000s and forgot he died in the movie. I legitimately got a little sad until you showed that he came back. Despite all his technical crimes against humanity, there is a lot to he said about a character who continues to try despite being clearly out of their league.
Watching Simpsons growing up, I never gave Dr. Nick a 2nd thought. As an adult who now has experience dealing with the medical industry, I realize that every line he had was satirical comedy gold, and it's only gotten worse.
I loved Dr. Nick, he was a good part of every episode. The humor he brought was exactly what I watched the simpsons for. Good video, sorry the comment is a little late
I'm genuinely impressed by the research and critical thought that people put into their favorite media. It never occurred to me that Dr. Nick was the only one that thought something was amiss with Mr. Burns only saying Homer's name.
I watched The Sting for the first time recently and couldn't figure out why I recognised the title card music. At first I thought it was used in Cuphead, but it's because you've been referencing The Sting in almost every Simpsons video!
