Simucube ActivePedal Review from a Race Car Driver

These pedals are a complete game changer. Here are my initial thoughts and walk through of the new Simucube ActivePedals. These pedals won’t magically give you the all knowing understanding of how to brake correctly. You still need to know what you’re doing. It just makes the whole process a lot easier.

Very rare to have someone who drives pro in real life and sim have such a quality channel. Thanks for all the info and feedback🙏🏽. A lot of us simmers who haven’t driven a real race car before are always left wondering which settings/ adjustments are the most accurate in the real world

These things are nuts. I sure hope it becomes the future of sim racing pedals with other companies developing the technology so it can become more affordable. When I got into sim racing in 2016 I never would have imagined direct drive technology would be where it is today. Although I have a SC2 Pro there are some very affordable direct drive wheels on the market now.

Nice Review! I love seeing all of these new technologies that are coming out. I just recently became a direct drive wheelbase owner last year. That really changed things for me, coming from the Fanatec CSW V2. I'm also on Heusinkveld Sprints, which changed the game even more than direct drive. The abilities of these look insane. These could be the end game pedals for many of us. The unfortunate truth is that most of us can't spend that much money on something like this. Maybe in the future, tech like this will become a little more affordable.

Great video man. Very well explained and as someone who has a SC 2 Pro I would love to have those but I know they are pretty expensive. What you said about the ABS part is pretty interesting. I always say iRacing feels the most realistic to me even though I have no GT experience but I’ve driven some fast cars on track at the limit. We were always told that iRacing got it wrong and ACC is more realistic in mashing the brakes all the way down and leaving the ABS to handle it. Your point is very interesting and I hope a lot of people hear this. Thanks again keep it up. Awesome content

Mind blowing engineering. Super cool for a pro-teams. Only flaw - holes in pedal plates, instead of bumps for grip :) And fact that average sim-racers can get away with just a buzz-motor on cell-brake pedal to catch that ABS feedback. No empty pedal (boiled brake fluid and other failures).

Hi Daniel Love this quality and like other mentioned, you’re back ground of racing gives us another vision on the products. Thanks for that! Some video ideas i would love to watch: - active clutch setup - gameplay with pedals close up - a real laptime compared with a sim laptime - the preparation before a race (simday, practice day, raceday) I can’t imagine how many hours it takes to make these videos on this quality lvl but you stand out right from the start. And got me curious about what/when the next one is. I think plenty of us want these but when price is €2380 for 1 and €4388 a set, the question came would this be possible to set this up with a non active gas pedal? Grtz belgium

Thanks a lot!! The ideas are amazing! Already took a screen shot of them. Thank you for the awesome ideas. In terms of pedal setup, it is possible to put a passive throttle pedal alongside the active brake pedal. Btw, the input type thing comes from real physics. Throttle is (was) controlled by opening the airway via cable, so it's position-controlled. Whereas braking happens when pads are pushed against disc; there is elasticity here and there and everywhere, but basic physics say the braking force is a friction force that depends on friction coeffiecent and pressure, and since hydraulics don't compress much, it's about the force. That's why braking muscle memory is all about force.

@@danielmorad I respect your position, but I disagree that there's anything funny about hus comment. I love the innovation that simucube is bringing to the table here, but the pricing is ridiculous. There's just no soft way of putting it. I for one can afford and justify a pro wheelbase (currently have a DD2 & considering the switxh), but the pedal price is absurd. I think simucube has simply overestimated the market. I run with a small group of relatively hardcore racers and even the most wealthy of us can't justify the pricepoint. They've priced this product for people that don't even consider "value" and cost isn't even a concern. These pedals could be double and it wouldn't hurt sales because these buyers don't need or care to consider it. You're a good ambassador for a quality company so I hope you're willing to tell your reps there's a good chance they've done little more than provide a solid concept for somebody else to copy at a reasonable cost.
@WaskiLP
@WaskiLP Год назад
@@Lessenjr Remember the first DDs and where we are now? Its takes time. Innovation does cost. Other brands will copy and the price will go down. We have seen it already once, we will see it a second time. Just matter of how long till then. A couple of years maybe.

Thanks for that video daniel 👏 I was thinking a more progressive brake feeling would be realistic, so that the beggining is pretty soft and the end of the travel becomes really hard to push, instead of having the end of the curve so flat.. interesting to see that you are using almost the opposite of that
@danielmorad
@danielmorad Год назад
That’s exactly what I’m doing in theory. Allowing the harder pedal section to have less sensitivity. It’s complicated when you look at it but when it’s on your foot, it all makes sense.
@patrickdurka6188

@@danielmorad makes total sense mate. I am usually running a progressive brake, so that i got more precision at the start of the travel, and then a pretty hard end. But with the damping and curve settings on the simucube pedals you can probably get really creative 👏
@ArchOfficial
@ArchOfficial 9 месяцев назад
Real curves are progressive. Fairly linear with no air in the system, but progressive still. More progressive with even 1% air. I think brake boosters change it though; a curve like Daniel's could be achievable I think. GT cars don't have brake boosters, though.

Great review. I am considering the brake pedal. I race a Radical SR 10. Do you have a view on how valuable the brake would be for a non-abs car? Daniel coming here and smashing the ideas of how ABS is used in braking. I think it's interesting that even the commentators during the races have said you go fully into ABS too, but maybe they meant what you're saying where you do hit ABS but then come back out of it. Seems like everyone thinks you ride out the ABS as long as possible and you're saying not to do that. I wonder how this will translate in ACC where Aries from Kunos has even said you ride out the ABS until you start trail braking. I'm going to have to try what you're saying later and see how it feels, I'm super interested now that you only use it as a signal to know when to back off a little bit and ride it out at threshold. Also curious about trying that logarithmic type of curve, I've always used both my pedals at linear. And finally those pedals are way more complex than I ever thought they'd be. Expensive as hell, but really cool how you can literally adjust every aspect from your mouse and not have to take them apart to switch out parts and pieces. I'm using the Asetek Invicta pedals and it really would be cool to change the brake pedal distance for street cars, etc., instead of always being at 30mm. I love the pedals, but they're super race oriented and you're committed to that platform.

Awesome review Daniel, I really think this is going to be a game changer for immersion and track performance like you said. Looking at your foot position, I was wondering if I could get some advice from a pro if you don't mind. I'm having trouble getting consistent at trail braking and I think it's because of my foot position so I had a couple questions: 1. When you're hitting the brake, do you have your braking heel on or off the heel plate? 2. Are you controlling the brake pressure when coming off the brake with your entire leg or just the foot, or both?

Hello Daniel. Great review! So far, it's most detailed, especislly of software. I think the purchase of ActivePedal definitely makes the sense for brake pedal. For throttle it would be nice. But for clutch I think it will be wastefully... Because clutch is just the clutch. Btw, not so many race cars use 3 pedals, mostly road cars, vintage cars, old rally cars. And for these particular needs would be great to have "simplified" and cheaper, but with similar style version of clutch simucube pedal. P.S. I made some reserch about pedals dimensions. ActivePedal hight is 205-225mm. Simagic 258mm. Heusinkveld 252-278mm. Why did Simucube make ActivePedal so short...? So great product and and so annoying limitation...😢

To me it feels like the brake travel is quite long in the profile...is that something unique to the Merc in your experience?? Question Daniel: If the ABS kicks in surely the motor is then pushing back on to your foot actually increasing input force on the loadcell as it hits the foot adding more brake pressure, like having positive input spikes on the brake trace rather the drops like a real ABS system. Or is there something to stop that happening?
@ArchOfficial

Fairly sure ABS acts after the piston. In a sim it'd be a purely software thing, not hardware. You won't be increasing pressure even if you get small spikes.

As a Simucube brand ambassador, I understand if you can't answer this honestly - but in your opinion is it worth the $2000+ to have one of these as a throttle pedal? I totally understand the appeal of having one as a a brake, but the value proposition for the throttle is a bit more difficult. I suspect this is why Simucube just very recently came out with a much more affordable throttle pedal...
@danielmorad
@danielmorad Год назад
In my opinion, it’s cool to have it but isn’t something that will gain you time. I have yet to try their passive throttle but that could be a cool option. The brake is what stands out the most to me. If I had the budget for it, I’d do both… if its tight and I have the think about it, go for one. Hope that answers well.

Do you find the throttle to be valuable, or just the brake? What do you experience with the throttle that gives you real life immersion? Thx
@danielmorad

At first, I felt like the throttle was overkill. As we fine-tuned the settings, it really became a massive benefit. I could build the exact pedal set that I wanted. The feedback of the pedal is 100% dialled in to feel like my real race car.

Would be really cool if these race car drivers would share the setups. For me, and i'm guessing a lot of other guys/girls out there, it is just guessing. I have never bin and probably never will be in a F1 car or GT3 car. So how would I know that my peddals feel like the real car? I want to simulate something I will never drive, but how do I know I am actually feeling what the real thing feels like? For now I will just use settings that make my driving better instead of what is more realistic, since I have 0 refference to the real thing. Like I said, I would love to see some profiles from the real drivers instead of the e-sport drivers. Maybe as basic settings with the product? Then if the brake is to stiff the gamer can always tune it down, but then at least you know what it is "suposed" to feel like.
