I was struggling a lot when I was a teenager. I wasted literally years just laying in my bed, crippled by my monstrous depression. I’ve spent my entire twenties just recovering mentally and slowly fixing my school credentials in order to get into university. This summer I was accepted to a university that will provide me with my dream education. I’m going to be a psychologist. When I read the acceptance letter this song started blaring in my head, this immense and pure feeling of joy and relief. No song I know of encapsulates that feeling so well as this one, what a treasure Sinead O’Connor truly was. I'm happy i shared that moment with her, somehow.
I'm a concert producer and I did a show with her on NY on this tour. If you notice she keeps pointing at her in-ears and the mic asking for it to be raised and looking at the monitor world, she did that at my show and midway through I ran over to ask them what was going on and they told me it was a nervous tick she had and did it at every show. They insisted everything was correct, so they would pretend to adjust things just to get her to stop pointing. It was kind of sad really. She played 60 minutes and then said, "My voiced is fucked.." and walked off. Sinead hugged me after the show and walked off to the bus. I felt like she should never had been on tour as she was driving everyone crazy. I was just so blown away at her voice and her presence I didn't care anything about her ticks.
It was NOT a nervous tick. It was Sinead trying to get the goddam men behind the console to listen to her and turn up her mic. Men dismissing women as nervous and irrational is a story as old as time. Sinead was the boss, and they didn’t listen. She complained throughout her career that men in the music business didn’t respect her as the boss who was paying everyone’s salary.
