And Frank, never apologize. The right kind of people don’t need it and the wrong kind of people will only try to do something terrible to you with it. Yeah I said it.

Dwight’s plastic surgery look is a direct lift from the Bogart and Bacall noir “Dark Passage”

24:05 Agamemnon's Volkswagen is the car Dwight borrows at the beginning of Family Values. It had a pronounced backfire problem.

Ed, I was turning 30 when SIN CITY lurched into view! Miller's evolution from DAREDEVIL to RONIN to his hyper-Noir style was a wonder to behold! 🖖♾

I was 33 and I too had been following Miller since his first run on Daredevil. I'm always impressed with Ed and Jim knowing their stuff even though they're relative "youngsters".

One of my all time favorite stories right here. I reference Ava's "there's a word for what I am....evil" speech ALL OF THE TIME. I feel there is a trend now of over apologizing for the villains or making them way too vulnerable. Her little monologue is PERFECTION. She is the best femme fatale. Even at the end she makes one last effort to manipulate Dwight, even though she has already made it clear that she is evil. Amazing. Gail is fantastic. Old Town in general is just a great narrative device. The evolution of Miller's style from, for example, DHP Marv to the more streamlined higher contrast blocky Marv is glorious to look at on both ends. The detail and grit from DHP and then the signature high contrast blocking....both glorious. I love all of the Sin City stories/world...but I feel this is the best narrative overall. Side Thought: (I was annoyed at Jessica Alba's casting as Nancy bc literally EVERY OTHER woman cast did the nudity that was needed to replicate the comic, she said she had kids so she didn't want to. I'm a woman so this isn't a gross misogyny thing, (I have my own tita that I can look at) it's a purity of replication of the art thing. ....it was just annoying that the character KNOWN for being topless, wouldn't replicate those panels. Carla Lugino as Lucille in the first film, made the panels LEAP onto the screen.....I wanted the same for Nancy. I have always felt she/Jessica was the let down for me....she was the thing that pulled me OUT of the gittiness of Sin City. Who would go to a sleezy gritty bar with top-FULL dancers? Lol Miller's Nancy art is iconic. I just wanted that on film. Sorry for the rant.)

I always loved how Marv is wearing Manute's hat after their fight for the next couple scenes. Speaks to the fun side of his character!

Bought this when it first came out in individual issues. Distinctly recall the day I got the final issue. Got off work, showered and started reading the first five again from the beginning, real slow. It was dark out when I started the final issue. Read it out loud to myself, nice and slow. Such a great memory.

Azzarello and Risso did a similar bandaged detective thing with a femme fatale in 100 bullets. But Risso's whole career is basically a homage to Sin City era Miller, so it's really not that surprising.

This was so much fun and how I spent my day off watching this. I hope you go through all of Sin City like this. This is the series I fell in love with Miller. Went back and found Dark Knight after this. Love to listen to your thoughts breaking this down.

I read something recently where Frank said his approach to comics was a balance between the constipation of American comics and the emptiness of Manga. I think besides the function of characterization, the inner monologue serves to slow the reader down in scenes that don’t have much spoken dialogue. I know that’s a concern of his.

So glad you guys constantly give props to Frank’s lettering. His work past 1989 has been hit or miss for me, but I forget how his lettering is one area where his craft truly exceeds itself, it took a while for that to sink in for me. I do, however, think you guys are underestimating the Steranko influence here tho, soecifically Red Tide but especially Outland; it’s not just cursory. I think Miller was paying far more attention to (and aiming for) Heavy Metal Magazine early on than he’s perhaps cared to let on.

Great episode. FYI, that car is supposed to evoke a Tucker Torpedo, Preston Tucker's technologically triumphant but ultimately doomed would be rival to the Big Three, not an Edsel.

That big left block 90/column lettering 10 ish spread is so interesting. I really liked it when it was used in Mignola's Dracula with the white lettering on black.

I think the sheer dress is another thing taken from Spillane rather than a pull from a visual medium. I'm pretty sure every one of those Mike Hammer books has a scene of a woman standing in front of a light so her dress becomes translucent.
