I've gotten teary every single time I ever heard this song. She sings this song of love and heartbreak from the depths of her soul. OMG, this live version is magic.

Sinead was such a rebel and didn't care about what the nay sayers had to say about her music, another great example of a strong woman who knew what direction she wanted to go in life.

She always brought her heart out onto the stage. Such a moving performance.

Sinead O'Conner's version is the definite version, though Chris Cornell did a great cover and Prince's original recorded version in 1984(released in 2018) was great too. Sinead's son died in 2022, so it's not possible to be a factor. By some accounts, when she recorded the song in 1989, her relationship with her boyfriend at the time was on the rocks, so she had an instant connection with the lyrics. And she recalled why she had the famous two tears roll down her cheeks at the recording of the music video, it's because she thought of her mother, who died in a car accident in 1985.

Sinead's always great. But her own song "Troy" is far superior to this one, in lyrics and delivery. Truly amazing.

She recorded this in 1990. She had only her oldest son Jake at the time of this performance. FYI her middle son Shane was 17 when he died in 2022 .AND.......Prince wrote it but Sinead "owned" it.

I prefer the studio version--it's more nuanced with more range between the soft whispery parts and the loud parts that soar. Plus the drum mix here is distractingly bang-y. If you liked this live version, give the studio one a shot sometime down the road.
