Her tears were genuine. She had recently reconnected with her mother, with whom she’d had a difficult relationship, but just before recording this her mother had died. She had said that when she sung the lyric “all the flowers that you planted, mamma, died when you went away” she was thinking of her mother, and the tears came naturally. Sinead always wore her heart on her sleeve - she was raw, honest and passionate, and I for one always loved her for that in addition to her wonderful voice.

I believe Prince said it was the best version he had heard. She had a troubled life. Her mother I believe left her, she came out about catholic priests and her career was affected. She lost her son and then she died at the age of 56 in 2023.

She unfairly became a social pariah…it made me so mad that, that one moment turned everything upside down, and then she spiraled for so long…I was so happy she was doing well after her long battle with depression, and then suddenly her son dies😞and she’s thrown back into a state of depression and mourning for her son…I believe his death was a turning point, and she couldn’t come back from it…she died of a broken heart, and that reason kills me because I thought Sinead was an amazing woman with a heart so big…ugh…brings me tears just writing about her.😞💔
@michaelconnor1542

@@roger1296not unfairly. She said pretty nasty things. She also said some true things. However her beliefs kept her from delineating between groups. So she attacked all Americans. She could have written songs that nuanced her beliefs, but she used her concerts and televised platforms to attack. So she flushed her career and ability to get her message out, right down the drain.

She was speaking up against sexual child abuse within the Catholic church and got cancelled for it. Also, the reference "mama" is because her mom had recently passed away when recording the song. She was also abused by her own mother. Sinead was a tormented but beautiful beautiful soul.

I feel for her but I when the Snl episode where she Tore a picture of Pope John Paul II in half at the end of her set aired I had no idea that was what she was trying to do. That's all she did no explanation. So how were people supposed to know. I'm sure a lot of people just thought she was disrespecting the Catholic Church. This is one of the greatest songs EVER recorded! It's one of those songs that I knew would hit #1. It would've been a shocker if it didn't. The radio stations always played it in its entirety, even though it's more than 5 minutes long. It's one of those songs where you KNOW you shouldn't cut. A couple things about the song itself, one I knew already one I found out while watching a Sinead documentary. The song was written by Prince as we all know but it wasn't to be a song for him. He wrote it for an upcoming band on his new label called "The Family". They didn't make it to the big time sadly but when Prince heard Sinead's version he basically gave her the song. He didn't want her version to be called a cover version because it was too good. What I didn't know until the documentary was that Prince actually wrote this about his long term housekeeper. She basically did everything for him, all he had to do every day was get up , get dressed into the clothes already laid out for him. Go into his music room and write songs and play guitar. Everything else was done by her. However her dad fell ill and she had to leave and move away and he had no idea how to manage. He didn't even know where the shops were, that is what the line means near the end "All the flowers that you planted ..... etc" is about. When Sinead sang that verse it made her think of her mum who had recently been buried and it made her cry. She had a bad relationship with her mum mostly but had reconciled before losing her. Great reaction and RIP Sinead, like Delores, gone way too soon.

It was written by Prince, but he didn't record a proper version of it until after Sinead O'Connor had made it a hit around the world. He wrote it in 1984 for a side project he had with a group called The Family (you can find their version on YT). He recorded a demo of it at this time, but didn't record his 'proper' version of it until 1993, some 3 years after Sinead.

Prince wrote it and Sinead did the cover of it. I'm not sure why Prince included that passage the way he did - mama - but Sinead 100% took that as a reference to her mother, with whom she had a very hard relationship, and then her mother died in a car accident when Sinead was 18. Those tears and emotions welling up were 100% real. I've heard it said that Prince was born to write this song, and Sinead was born to sing it. Couldn't be more true. The video is stunning. Her eyes and beauty. What a depth of soul, and she sings with almost overwhelming emotion.

As others have already said, Prince didn’t end up doing much with this song. But his lyrics, when he sings of “mama” he’s talking about a girl, a love interest. For Sinead, “mama” is literally about her mother, who she had a very difficult relationship with. Hence how much more emotion she was able to channel into this song.

about the Tear falling and why it happened because of the Part Mentioning Mama and the flowers that Mama planted in the backyard (Sinead's Own Mama who passed away in 1985) popped into her mind during that lyric and imagined if Her Mother could have been like that instead of a Abusive Monster towards her growing up that was the reason for the Natural Real emotion single tear falling moment....so that tear was and also was not for Sinead's Mom

The best and original Prince version is “Prince -Nothing Compares 2 U (cinematic version)”.There is no video-but there is sound recordings on line and RU-vid. The first official release of the song was “The Family” (a band Prince created to put more of his music out. Prince just wrote and produced for these extra bands he created to cover his music. Sometimes Prince would just record the albums by himself and just have them sing their parts to add their vocals to the album.). Another excellent version of nothing compares 2 U is Chris Cornell’s version live. The “mama” line is just not been changed from the original prince lyrics. Because Prince sings, I could put my arms around every GIRL I see and later references that all the flowers died when she(his lover) went away. Meaning both literally the flowers died; because she nurtured them; but also simultaneously some of the joy and beauty went away.

Prince also wrote "Manic Monday" by the Bangles. That's a catchy tune. Prince also covered "Motherless Child" and "Creep", both bangers.

The tears were about her relationship with her abusive mother. Troy is brilliant. Again about her mother.

Also Sinead's version of the Elton John song Sacrifice is breathtaking.

Thank you for covering this song. It did indeed wreck her career when she ripped up a photo of the Pope on National TV. I believe it was Saturday Night Live

Her name, Sinead, is typical and traditional Irish in origin and pronunciation. O'Connor is an ancient Irish surname which goes back centuries, the O' signifying that the family was part of a larger clan or tribal group headed by a chieftain named 'Conor', or a variation in spelling of that name. I had great grandparents who emigrated from Ireland by that name.

Sinead was a great singer, she was totallly commited to her art and her beliefs, she literally changed Ireland and it cost her (she tore up a photo of The Pope on live US TV) Her mother was a very ill woman who beat youngSinead and Sinead suffered all her life though Sinead forgave her in the end, but she had great joy and great tragedy in her life too...her son took his life aged 17 and Sinead its said never got over it. She died alone in London....maybe it was a broken heart...she was a very kind and generous person expecially in her home town of Bray just south of Dublin where she lies in peace...RIP.

Two issues with your comments, in what way did she change Ireland ? and she is buried in Dun Laoghaire, not Bray

I think what he means is Sinead single handedly with one act of defiance on US tv laid waste to the grip the Catholic church had in Ireland and brought on a more humane approach by the church. Up to this time the church ruled Ireland with an iron fist and were revered like deity , they could do no wrong.

Sinead was fiercely human. After Lennon, she was my favorite. In this video, her disembodied head subtly conveys that breaking apart, her inner turmoil.

“Keening” is an ancient Celtic way in which women express profound grief. It is a vocalization of crying, wailing, screaming. Very powerful and u settling to hear. You should look up examples if you are not familiar.
