Prince wrote a great song but with Sinead got hold of it she took it to a whole new level. You can feel the pain and emotion when she sings it. Love her version and her voice in it
Warning this might trigger some people. This is a emotional song for her When Sinéad cried In the video, it was a real tear. In the Rolling Stone Top 500 songs issue, she said, "I didn't intend for that moment to happen, but when it did, I thought, 'I should let this happen.'" In her memoir Rememberings, O'Connor explained that the lyric that triggered the tear was: All the flowers that you planted mama In the back yard All died when you went away Her mother, who was abusive toward her, died in a car accident in 1985 when Sinéad was 18. That day, she removed the photo of Pope John Paul II from her mother's bedroom wall; this was the same photo she famously tore up on Saturday Night Live. Sinéad O’Connor has revealed her late mother Marie was so “evil” that she stripped the young star naked as a child and regularly kicked her in her private parts in an attempt to damage her reproductive organs. The 54-year-old describes her fear on the day her father moved out of the family home and her mother forced her and her siblings into the garden hut and locked them out of the house when Sinead was eight years old. “I knelt on the ground in front of the gable wall and wailed up to the landing window to get her to let us into the house when it got dark,” she recalls. Peace out.
That’s tough. My single parent alcoholic father was incredibly abusive towards me from the age of around 10. It never stopped he’s dead now and can’t find a tear for him. I don’t know. Great live performance
Sinead is RAW EMOTION expressed nakedly. Listen to her not with the ear of technique and the critical head but rather with the innocent purity of the soul, and she will, with the UTTER BRILLIANCE of her Sacred gift, win your heart forever!
The original music video was so impactful. It was the first time we saw just the stark image of her face with a tear rolling down and her haunting voice. Please watch that.
Her story is pretty amazing actually. There is a great doco out there recently plus she released an autobiography. She has had a very, very tough life. And continues to as her son commited suicide last year. This is one of the few times where I recommend you watch the original music video.
Its too bad that youre focussing on her voice being perfect and not alternative music and not listening to the words and the performance. She was number one for a long time here
I listen but I'm honest on what I hear as well..the song is great I've said this already I even said it could be othe performances she did prior to that.
I actually love the froggy tone that you’re talking about. Maybe because I’ve listen to other singers, who have gotten me used to it. As long as you’ve got control over it, when she does, it’s cool. It’s making her performance really unique as well! Especially since it’s not how she sings it in the recording, or at least it’s not as blatant.
Sinead is a force of nature, you need to hear her singing her own stuff. The song Troy would be a great start. The stuff you said was weird, is her using traditional Irish folk techniques (she's Irish), you need to listen to some Irish music to understand this.
I believe Prince wrote it for Sinead and then recorded it himself after the fact….I could be wrong though…..Nothing compares to the studio version of this though, her vocal is perfect in the studio version
Prince wrote this song for a side project band he had called The Family. They were a flop. The song was also a flop for Prince. Sinead took the song to #1 all over the world.
I think her voice would make more sense to you if you listened to some more Irish music. There are a few things her voice does that sound very distinctly adjacent to Irish folk music.
That part of her vocal was apart of her style. The Irish yodel. You would get a bette feel of it with the songs on The Lion and The Cobra album. It is part of what made her her when she was unknown to everyone in the US except college students
I can really appreciate your take on her tone(s) as it's not a sound we hear much here in the USA. She is Irish and if you listen to many Irish singers (the females for obvious reasons), you will hear a lot of the stylings she uses in this. I sometimes wince a little when hearing the way some EU artists tend to swallow the vowels in that way that sort of scrunches up the vocal cords that way you were talking about but I have come to love it and truly appreciate the skill involved.
Sinead is irish, thats no.1 on why she sings weird. They have their own musical scale sometimes. No. 2, there wasnt any kind of auto tune back then, a lot of artists were just a bit off tune as part of their style: morrissey, cranberries, David Bowie. But the most significant thing is that she was primarly a punk artist. If you look at her records her first 2 are pure punk but she was pulled into pop consistently. Her managers and everyone around her continuously tried to shift her into being Madonna or Cyndi Lauper, but by some miracle of her strenght she kept true to her style and only did a few pop songs, which she did majestically anyway. And.. in other news... she had serious mental health issues, abandonment, abuse, etc, from her own family. Its just people cant really imagiine what it would be like to be an inmensely talented 18 year old woman in the 80s with no one to protect her. The sharks almost destroyed her. She is a survirvor most of all, and her voice is so unique and amazing, even if she doesnt have auto tune available like most people today, or great equipment for a concert in Chile, where is so dry, and its 90 degrees mid day, and 30 degrees at night..
I think the official video of this cover by Sinead is much better. I never thought this cover could never be performed better than SIneads official video, but that was before I saw Chris Cornell's cover. I give the nod to Chris's cover, but both are exceptionally performed.
As a follow-up it'd be interesting to hear you react to the studio version of this song. The music video is also interesting which can be a part of the reaction too.
See, Prince wrote this about a romantic relationship, cos he's an all timer sexy-wise. But when Sinead got this song, she was like, this is about my abusive catholic mother. So, the emotion is very different.
Her unconstrained acapella voice is best heard here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PweUGhCZNiM.html in a rendition of Danny Boy. Well worth listening to.
Yo you didnt need to be talking about weird tones and dont be trying to judge Sinead, She a class act and a UK treasure.. You not qualified to judge her
Weird is NOT a good discription dude! This lady is Irish & it's probably her beautiful accent you hear! You're not a known vocalist at all, so what sounds good or not to you doesn't mean anything as the world doesn't revolve around your ears or bias taste, you have a problem mate! Sinead has sung & performed with & in front of the Biggest Names in the Industry! She is also internationally big! You wouldn't even be able to believe let alone know about!
I definitely recommend watching her videos. I think not everyone is as skilled live. Prince wrote this song & chose Sinead to sing it. Her album ‘The Lion & the Cobra’ is amazing. I hope you delve further into those recordings. If not, I really feel like you’re missing out.
Sinéad O'Connor has an unusual range but I love her ❤️ she was my dads favourite singer and always referred to her as his hall pass lol 😆 I think this live version isn't as good as the radio version. Appreciate your honesty, lots of love ❤️
Dude, as much as I love Chris Cornell, he had some very flat notes which you didn’t say anything about. I’m just saying. I think you were very critical of this performance from the beginning. Maybe it’s your mood. And the fact that it wasn’t a style you were expecting.
Prince wrote and composed this song, but his own version was not released until 1993 (with Rosie Gaines). His original 1984 studio recording of the song was eventually released in 2018. You may have re-acted to the cover by Chris Cornell.
⛔️ YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND IRISH SINGING BEFORE JUDGING HER VOICE☘️ . . . . YOU CAN’T UNDERSTAND WHAT SHE’S DOING WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING IRISH SINGING. 🇮🇪 THERE ARE UNIQUE TECHNIQUES SUCH AS KEENING. IT WOULD BE LIKE JUDGING ZULU AFRICANS FOR THEIR UNIQUE LANGUAGE SOUNDS, NOT UNDERSTANDING THAT THEY HAVE A CERTAIN WAY OF EXPRESSING THINGS.
Paul Dempsey does an amazing rendition of this song too, very true to Sinead’s version. And imo better than Chris Cornell’s version, as good as Chris’s was I think Paul’s performance was better
There's a 1000 times more raw emotion in this live video than any slick video. In the video, you can almost hear the director saying "don't forget to look into the camera when you sing You"!
The Irish accent is a very strong beautiful one that can usually be heard when singing. Bono from U2 is the only Irish person I can think of who can pull off a non-Irish vocal sound.
