Experience a one-hour “Sing-Along with Mele Fong” class as Mele on ukulele and husband Rich on u-bass led students in playing 12 paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) and country western songs as the song lyrics with ukulele strums and chords were projected on the large screen at Kaunoa Senior Center for adults 55 and better on Maui. New for this program was a history of paniolo (Hawaiian cowboys) and definitions of country and western songs.
We played Paniolo Country, Ulupalakua, Rawhide, and Deep in the Heart of Texas that is shown on this video. Unfortunately, the camera stopped working and did not record the additional eight songs that we played (Home on the Range, Hey Good Lookin', Red River Valley, Ghost Riders in the Sky, Could I Have This Dance, I'm an Old Cowhand, Take Me Home, Country Roads, and Happy Trails). We sang each song once and learned the stories behind the songs in keeping with Hawaiian oral history traditions (although most of the songs were not Hawaiian).
The one-hour Sing-Along Paniolo Songs class was taught on February 22, 2024, with a full classroom of 29 students signed up.
