Singapore vs Malaysia Tanks - How do they compare? 

The PT91 is not as outdated as you might think. Even the oldest variant, the PT91, produced in the late 1990s, sports a decent FCS with a thermal sight. I need to do some digging to find more information regarding the FCS, but I’m almost certain that it has auto-lead. The PT91M is a tank produced between 2007-2009. If public data is anything to go by, the armor is mediocre, only upgrading ERA on top of the old composite armor. However, nearly every other system has got an upgrade. Below is the list of said upgraded systems. -New “Savan-15” FCS, manufactured by a French company called Sagem, has a thermal sight -New engines with auto transmission -New sight for the commander with thermal and visible spectrum channel, also manufactured by Sagem -New navigation system, also manufactured by Sagem, a laser gyro GPS/INS system -New turret stabilizer -New laser warning system, manufactured in Poland -New smoke launchers that can function with the laser warning system -New communication equipment, manufactured by French company Thales -New monitoring systems -New tracks, manufactured by Diehl Defense of Germany IMO, with all these new tech in mind, I don’t see how the PT91M is outdated. Of course, the glaring exception would be it’s armor, which according to public data, is quite bad. Poland still uses PT91 tanks, and in fact plans to upgrade them in the near future. AFAIK, they ain’t retiring the PT91 soon.

Tbh, its mostly because we have lesser military budget even compared to Philippines now. Before this we can get good stuff as our defence budget is on healthy level. Now? Its on "underfunded" area, really dangerous in the long run.

@@gtbest5417 the XM-8 was a failed US experimental next gen assault rifle that was made in the late 80s-90s. It was originally part of a larger weapon system that included a 25mm smart grenade launcher and targeting computer. It’s now part of the RMN armory and is not mass produced or in limited production.

A lot of our budget is lost to cronyism so if we look at an example RM 5 billion defense budget might be only 50% as the money will be siphoned off layer by layer and through the bribes to both business leaders and officials.

@LinKongDa I served as armoured infantry in the 90s. I’ve seen plenty of AMX tanks got stuck in mud, throw track or just died in the middle of a mission.

Going by the Ukrainian war, those tanks are equally vulnerable to 'top attack' munitions. Unless they're facing each other, Leopard is Best, otherwise against ATMs, they'll be TOAST !!! (without active protection). US army now getting light tanks for their inventory.

Yes, there's a difference in doctrine. Leopard 2 only has blow-out panel in the turret's ammo storage but not the hull's ammo storage, as shown in my video. Moreover, modern Russian tanks with autoloader and carousel storage do have protection against ammo detonation.

I have doubts about the whole carousel kaboom issue. The Russians store their spare rounds in the turret. If a shot hit any of those spare rounds, the turret would've gone kaboom anyway, regardless of the autoloader. And they are way easier to hit.

@@ABCantonese It actually really is a problem. It's so common that the turret flying off on Russian tanks has a name for it, it was called the "Jack in the box" effect, the rounds stored in a circle around the bottom of the turret detonates and pops the turret right off.

Auto-loader also prevents the tank from changing into different ammos for different types of targets.

Leopard 2A4s were torn apart in Afrin by ATGM cornet. They have a disadvantage in the form of an ammunition store in the hull. And this is a big disadvantage.They have a chance, a big one and it turns into statistics.

@@bsolutions525 Can show me the official link? I search online and only can find the info that Singapore uses the Matador and Spike SR. Both do not have the explode on turret top mode so to ignite the ammo stored in the T-72 turret is impossible. Just need to know if the Matador and Spike can penetrate the T-72 base armor thickness with explosive reactive armor.

PT-91M ERA is not soviet. ERAWA-2 is polish design (ERA, WA - Adam Wisniewski, constructor) and proved very effective even for older kinetic penetrators. Now there is a new version - Pangolin.

Trying to convince people by comparing a version of a polish T72 tank from the late 1980s equipment to a more modernized upgraded leopard 2 in 2000 era that came with an active protection system isn't be a fair comparison lol.

Sg adopted the leo 2 maybe because they're going on defensive. Leo 2 can perform in urban areas as Sg is highly consist off. But its not build for the harsh jungle terrain in My, which for my opinion the PT91M excels at.

Why would Singapore deploy leo2 to Sarawak region, Singapore has always adopt the defensive doctrine. Unless provoke, off course.

Modern tanks do not need any more armour improvements, mobility shall be a more top piority, Hand-Held AT Launchers is a really tricky thing to counter being that it can penetrate any MBTs in service without any ERA , Mesh or anything to stop the shell, as I mentioned you could apply spaced armour but theres always weakspots were no real Anti-Heat Round Protection is protecting so the AT Laucher soldier could just flank it and destroy it from there. Mobility does not really ensure that tanks can advoid missiles(obviously) but would increase the chances of advoiding it.

Poland had its own armored factories. Bumar Labedy, HSW etc. Many times the same cars from Polish production had better quality of steel and workmanship. However, in fact, the Soviet Union allowed members of the Warsaw Pact to take over older types of vehicles, limited. Malaysian PT-91M is much better than polish PT-91. More armor reconstruction than in polish PT-91.

the reason malaysian buy pt91m is because it is the lightest tank of that category……malaysian soil is not for heavy tank…..it will stuck in to a mud especially during heavy rain…..that is why malaysia goes with advanced apc with atgm and personel atgm of various types….i read in malaysian army magazine ….

They appreciate the presence of ERAWA (ERA) but the coverage on the sides is too small. They appreciate FCS DRAWA - fire accuracy (experts in Poland know that the domestic PT-91 FCS has the problem of a floating reticle and the stabilization is old, hydraulic). It is unknown which PT-91s were transferred. Ukrainians believe that it plays its role well. The Malaysian PT-91 Pendekar is much further away. 1000 HP engine, RENK gearbox, modernized cannon, FCS Sagem, EPS-72 electric stabilization, modified main armor, etc. A new ERA armor was created in Poland - Pangolin.

@@bsolutions525 I would argue otherwise not to back our ministers though but at the moment the most critical area of defence for Malaysia now is at sea and air not at land and that can be seen with the lcs and lca program currently undergoing. Furthermore even with lack of tanks we did procure a lot of apcs and ifvs after lahad datu which does have anti tank capabilities. Also i think its a good choice not to invest in expensive equipment when it won't be used at the nearest moment. No hard feelings 😎👍

Hi, Singapore government/media doesn't say, but I found it on open sources. "The Spanish Leopard 2E, the Greek Leopard 2HEL, the Singapore Leopard 2SG, and derivatives of the Leopard 2A6, use the 55 caliber-long tank gun." and "Referred to as the Leopard-2SG this upgraded MBT also has the longer barrel Rheinmetall L55 120mm gun."

@@YGfromSG No L/55 equipped Leo 2SGs . A Leo 2SG is just an upgraded/modernized Leo 2A4. Singapore also only ordered and acquired Leo 2A4s from ex Bundeswehr stocks. No Singapore order for Leo 2A7s which are armed with L/55 guns are placed, at least officially. On the other hand, our Leo 2SG's L/44 guns could probably have been upgraded to L/44A1 standard that allows for firing of higher pressure APFSDS ammunition. Penetration performance will no doubt be enhanced compared to a L/44 but of coz will still be below that of what the L/55 is capable of.

If u want to talk abt local battle conditions, the vast majority of malaysia is forest/plantations. Ur tank turret elevation and urban combat whatever is only applicable is very specific scenarios. Aamour thickness is physical armour thickness. All military comparison are based on texbook facts and not actual combat scenarios bcuz no one can predict actual combat scenarios. That is how Russia's military is ranked 2nd in the world until failing in Ukraine.

Ukraine wants more of them....But infact, korean K2 is a much better platform.

Acutally Ukraine first obtained T-72M1R - latest limited modification of T-72's and they judged that they are like "Mercedes" in relation to "Lada". Of course, this is a kind assessment because their armor is weak, but they received the most modern thermal imaging - KLW-1 Asteria, better than the Leopard 2A5, good on-board communication by WB Electronics / Radmor (US vehicles use them under license), improved electrical installation, batteries, renovated engines. The Ukrainians covered them with ERA Kontakt-1 - they exploited the advantage of modern thermal imaging. First PT-91 was lost several days ago but the symptoms are that he was abandoned and set on fire. The fire was coming from the driver's hatch, which means that the fuel tank was set on fire, and there was no detonation of the ammunition in the carousel automatic loader.

If u wear body armour it will reduce your mobility and comfortability 😅 Using suitable body armour can give u a high change of survivalibility . @@thesnipersaint2809 Sounds like a really stupid place to store your ammo. Unless you're talking about the "ready to use" rounds that are just beside the gun? As for the "not angled" armor, that is because of how ceramic composite armor functions. Tank rounds don't ricochet off like they did in WWII, they're too fast for it now, so you either lodge in the armor or it penetrates, angling don't work like that any more. It's just slanted to put more material in the way of the round rather than to generate a ricochet. Ceramic composite works by "bleeding off" the energy of the hit by generating cracks in the armor, so the bigger the facing of the armor hit, the more energy lost. The best example would be if you saw bulletproof glass getting hit, they're more or less ceramic armor too, just transparent.

What special advantages does the Merk have over the Leopard that would warrant having another MBT (only complicating logistics, training & maintenance) in the SAF? The PT91 is based on the T72M1 which role in the Soviet Army was to support the rapid deployment of Soviet infantry during a high speed push through Europe. The Leopard 2 was designed to fight Soviet tank horde through the Fulda Gap. The PT91 was chosen because it fit Malaysia operational requirements and doctrine. There's no way you're going to have a massive tank battle like the Battle of 73 Easting on the hills and jungles of Malaysia, so what's the point in having a 60+ ton MBT? Yeah, on paper the PT 91 is inferior. But it's not supposed to do the same job that the Leopard 2SG does in the SAF. It's supposed to support infantry in combined operation in a semi urban, semi jungle environment Apples and Oranges. They're different tanks with different role in their respective military

@@Witch_Hunters lol, PT-91M were also selected also due to its lighter weight as we considered high level of infrastructure accessibility is required (Japanese also have similar requirements so they made lighter Type 10 that ironically almost the same weight as PT-91M) + as @muaz has said earlier, its to mainly support the infantry as a better armored fire-support vehicle, flushing out enemy fortifications. Our main tank killing assets is infantries equipped with RPG,CG and ATGM + AV-8 Gempita IFV that were equipped with 4x ATGM ready to fire + 8 reloads each, more than what Hunter IFV of Singapore Army can carry. PT-91M is there mostly to cover IFVs and infantries doing their job, including tank killing. And btw, 10th Para no longer operated Scorpion Light Tank. They mostly operated a few MIFV/ACV-300 Adnan + Supacat ATMP now.
