Who besides you guys is saying this is a controversial arrest? I've seen this same thing so many times. It happens when people refuse to cooperate with police at a traffic stop. Her and her passenger are obviously in the wrong.

In Miami people from other countries do drive here without a valid and legal driver’s license. I have also driven on the freeway in Miami while illegal vehicles such as a bicycle was being ridden in the middle lane of freeway traffic! If we don’t share the information about how important it is to drive legal vehicles with a legal driver’s license, people will continue to knowingly and unknowingly break laws. In other countries a bicycle on a freeway may be no big deal, here it is. Just as an example.

Sunny Isles Beach police released a statement Tuesday night, saying the video didn’t capture the entire incident. “The female driver shown in the video was stopped by our officers for traffic violations. She then stated she had ‘immunity.’ She repeatedly refused to comply with officers’ orders and was placed in handcuffs,” the statement read in part. “Upon further investigation, it was determined that the diplomatic tag that was affixed to the car was counterfeit and the female driver was arrested for driving with a counterfeit tag.” According to her arrest report, Mercado told officers that the car was registered with the U.S. Department of State, however a special agent with the department confirmed that the license plate was “not a valid diplomat tag as a diplomat tag has several letters in addition to numbers.” Police said Mercado later admitted to having a Florida driver’s license and did not respond when an officer asked her why she didn’t admit to that before. Mercado was released from jail Wednesday on a $2,500 bond. She faces a charge of having a counterfeit registration, license plate or sticker on a motor vehicle. A Local 10 News crew was outside the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as she and Huss left in a Maybach that also had a diplomat tag, along with a handicap placard. I was stopped yesterday. Speeding. I stopped and I waited until the officer knocked at my car window. I said good morning and he asked me for my driver license, insurance and registration. I complied. He told me I was speeding and I agreed; because, obviously it was the truth and he has the radar gun to prove it. I said I’m sorry officer; took my ticket and nothing major occurred. He advised me to drive safe and that’s was everything. It’s not complicated. Just don’t fight the police. You always going to loose.
These so called “cops getting owned” videos aren’t helping either. My nephew tried pulling that crap last time he got pulled over, and it didn’t end well for him. The police were the minor problem.. then he had to deal with my brother (his dad) when he got out.

If you are asked to show your driver's license, show your driver's license. A passport is identification for traveling around the world, not for driving.

You just said the passport is used for TRAVELING around the world. That's why when someone is leaving your home in their private conveyance, you tell them safe TRAVELS, not safe DRIVING. At the end, the cops say that the video doesn't show the entirety of what occurred and the reporter stated that a longer version can be viewed on their website. So the question is, why did the news channel choose to show us this edited video instead of the version with more information?
A passport isn't a driver's license it is solely identification when you dont have a physical I.D. . A drivers license is different rather it be from another country it still proves that your a lawful driver. If you didn't have a present driver's license on hand, you should have not been behind the wheel, simple.

She lied about being a diplomat, that her car was registered with the US government, and she had no license. Just for having no license the cops can order you out of your car. In all 50 states a police officer at his own discretion, can arrest you for driving unlicensed. Now what were you gonna tell us about it being unlawful again? Further, let's say it was actually an unlawful order, which it wasn't. You're actually gonna sit there and fight with the cops because if you don't get out of your car they're just gonna drag you out and arrest you anyway. Like it or not, no matter what, when an officer asks you to get out, you have to. No matter how unreasonable it is, or if the cop is on a power trip, you have to get out.
It's always been a suitable form of identification/travel document. That's why they tell you in damn near every establishment that you can use your DL or a passport for identification purposes.
A passport is Not suitable as a substitute for a driver's license in Florida. Visitors to Florida who wish to drive while here are required to have in their immediate possession a valid driver license issued in his or her name from their country of residence.

To be fair, there are an estimated 480,000 Miami residence according to the insurance institute that do not have a drivers license or insurance. The primary reason we pay the highest insurance rates in the country. Making it much worse, Miami Dade area cops Do Not enforce traffic laws in general. Just go to any shopping center and see how many people are loading what they bought into their cars smack in the middle of a painted fire zone with a cop right next to them enforcing nothing. It shameful they enforce basically nothing. Making it impossible to find all those 480,000 that make Miami roads so dangerous and expensive.

She also claimed that her car was registered with the Sate Department. Neither one of those is true and she may even be charged with fraud. She had no drivers license to produce. The cops had every right to LAWFULLY order her out of the car at that point. She refused, which is resisting. At that point in all 50 states, police have the legal authority to use force to pull you out of the car. They could've even used a taser on her. Your triggered because the video made you emotional. Funny how you're taking the side of someone who literally claimed to be a diplomat.
This is why you get hemmed-up by the police. All you have to do is 1, don't have bogus tags, and 2, comply when you get nabbed for suspicious activities.
She also had a fraudulent diplomat license plate on her car. She is not a victim, she broke the law, didn’t provide correct driver ID off any kind, then resisted what what asked of her. All she had to do was number one have a legitimate license plate on her car to have a legitimate drivers license on her. It could’ve been in an international license from another country. It doesn’t matter it was still would’ve been recognized here in the US and number two all she had to do is get out of the car and comply. Everything that happened was her fault.
The woman was driving without a license, registration, insurance and fake plates. She also took an illegal left turn. Next an illegal alien with guns in his car pick's her up at the police station. So Local 10 news, what is so controversial about arresting a driver who is resisting to get out of her car to be arrested on all these charges?
When I was an international student, I went to the DMV and got a driver's license. Anyone can do that. A tourist can have a driver's license from his home country. While a passport works as ID, that's not what the cop wanted to see.

I know who the guy is!!! He’s entrepreneur Scotty Huss. I met him at an Aventura Condo where he was living with his then girlfriend and I did security for that place. He’s a very humble guy who doesn’t bother anyone. It’s just screwed up this happened to him and his girl.
This is amazing she hands over a passport while driving to a police officer for identification but in the State of Florida when a police officer asks you for your driver's license while driving in the State of Florida you have to hand over your driver's license so they know that you are allowed to drive in the state of Florida if the person does not provide a driver's license to the police officer as per state statue. Then it's an arrestable offense and then obviously we have somebody in the passenger seat being loud an uncooperative and also obstructing justice which is also another arrestable offense. Why are people with this entitlement feeling that they could just videotape police officers at any given moment to try to get their way because they don't feel like driving with a driver's license or such then the guy says we'll see in court does he understand that not having a driver's license is also a losing battle in court or is he that stupid
