We have a guest-tutorial today! Welcome, Heidi, and thank you for sharing your very detailed and helpful video so others can learn about this delicate procedure (as well as enjoy your lovely accent!)

Did your machine just start sewing all of the sudden without the foot controller being depressed at all? Well, the common cause are capacitors! You may find a capacitor under and inside the machine, or perhaps there are a couple inside the foot controller or there could even be a couple inside the motor. In this tutorial, Heidi will show you where and how to locate the capacitor(s) in the motor specifically, as well as how to remove them. She gives excellent instruction, so grab some gloves, q-tips, roll up your sleeves and let’s get started! (Capacitors were only issued with Featherweights that were manufactured in the UK, so if you have a US-made Featherweight, you will not need to worry about removing them.) If your capacitors are located in the machine or foot controller, follow this link for helpful step-by-step photo instructions on how to easily remove them: singer-feather...

Heidi, It is so refreshing to hear someone properly pronounce "Bakelite" - BAY-ke-lyte. Bakelite's excellent electrical insulation and heat resistance is still appreciated in our Singer Featherweight electric motors. Dr. Leo Baekeland, the Belgian-born American chemist who invented Bakelite, was so respected for his accomplishments that he was featured on the September 22, 1924 cover of Time Magazine.

Yves Cayer I’m wondering this as well

@@JacobVossFilms These capacitors were originally placed to reduce radio frequency (RF) interference from the non-insulated case of a Singer Featherweight motor. Unless you are a Amateur Radio operator ("Ham") or listen to AM radio, it is doubtful that you will be aware of the RF interference. These sewing machine motors function perfectly fine without those capacitors. 72.

I wonder if mixmaster mixer motors had caps.😎 They also used an ac reostat.

Hi, I'm learning masses from you, thanks. The motor on my singer featherweight 222k is overheating, is it beyond redemption?☹️. Would so appreciate your advice 😊. Thanks again.

Thanks for asking! Give us a call in the shop to troubleshoot the motor. There are a few options to get it up and running or overhaul it: singer-featherweight.com/pages/contact-us

Hello! I am trying to find the previous video to this one where she shows a motor in poor condition. I have just bought a FW and there is a patch of black dust (or soot?) under the motor or belt bottom during use. I can’t see if this is from the motor or belt itself? Her other video might help, do you know where I can find it? TIA 🤔

I heard that the capacitors also help prevent arcing on the armature. Is this just one of those tales that get spread but aren't true?
