He realized this when he got to hit hotel room and his wife said well you’ll never see that again… they they got a call some time later from an honest stranger who found the wallet and wanted to return it… The stranger happened to be a big broadway producer and would invite the two of them to see the hit musical HAIR. As soon as the two of them heard the Age go Aquarius they knew they had to record it. So an act of honestly led to a magical song that has changed the world. It swept the Grammies and we still sing this ditty everyday... Find out how it came together next on professor of rock.

My oldest sister was basically a piano protege; she could play both by music reading and by ear and did both phenomenally well. When she was a junior in high school, the orchestra and choir performed a concert with Aquarius/Let the Sunshine as their finale. I recall her practicing this song on the piano at home for no less than an hour every day for weeks on end, beginning in mid-September, right after school commenced after summer vacation. She would be playing and, instead of stopping at a mistake she would simply say, "Gotta fix that." And then, when she was done playing the song through, she would go to those mistakes that only she heard, jot a tiny note on the sheet music, and then visualize playing the song before actually going through it again and playing it through. She worked to be able to play it to perfection, never repeating a mistake. She passed away earlier this year and one of the things that I miss most about her was hearing her play the piano. And I will always remember the brief look of elation on her face after playing that song perfectly in that concert on the Tuesday evening before Thanksgiving, November 1970.

Professor-these artists totally respect you and it’s great seeing you bring joy to them (which I’m sure they aren’t used to from an interviewer). You can see how impressed and taken back they are from your research and knowledge of their music. To see Billy Davis Jr tear up from your comments at the end of the interview says it all. You are not only doing us the fans a great service but also leaving the artists respected, happy and feeling accomplished.👏👏👏👏

It was everywhere that year and it's still here with us today. So rousing and beautiful. Crazy that a song that moved a nine year old boy, still gives the 62 year old me, goosebumps. What a wonderful couple.Billy Davis Jr. and Marilyn McCoo's music has been so much a part of my life. First with all of their great hits with the 5th Dimension such as "Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In", "Up Up And Away", "Stone Soul Picnic", "Wedding Bell Blues", One Less Bell To Answer" and so many more. Then, After Billy and Marilyn left the group, they recorded one of the great duets of the 70's "You Don't Have To Be A Star (To Be in My Show). Finally, during the 80's, one of my favorite music shows was Solid Gold. For several years, Marilyn co-hosted the show and did a terrific job. I've always loved her and felt she Is one of the greatest female vocalists of all time. It's terrific that Billy and Marilyn are still together after all these years and I wish them many more years of happiness. A special couple who gave us so much great music.

I heard this when I was 4 years old- music then was different: only on the radio, records or occasional TV spots. Music had a different context than everything else- the sound tracks of my childhood that paralleled innocence and wonder- this one in particular really stands out. I was able to view the Hippie generation as a young sibling to older sisters and brother that included so much music that was relevant to the time. I am eternally grateful to that era of Music and this one in particular brimming with hope and optimism- Great Interview- I love it

They only recorded "Wedding Bell Blues" as a joke, because Marilyn loved Billy, so Bones Howe thought it would be a good addition to their "Age of Aquarius" album. But it was at first not considered for a single because Laura Nyro's original made the KHJ Top 30 only two years before. Boy was that wrong. It became the 5th Dimension's second #1 hit in 1969.

I was 8 years old in 1969. What a year that was! For me, this song was the anthem for what was going on. Growing up during Vietnam, the Cold War, and Jim Crow (my Texas town didn't honor the Civil Rights Act of 1964) it seemed like the world was a cruel scary place. Listening to this song gave my eight year old mind reason to hope! I remember my family watching the Apollo launch to the Moon, knowing this was a huge moment in history. My grandfather was with us that day and had tears in his eyes. He told us how, when he was a young man of 21, he saw a newspaper that said "some boys built a flying machine out of bicycles" and that no one believed it at first. He was born in 1882, to German immigrants who built their farm and community on land grants given to them by the state of Texas (back when Texas gave huge incentives to immigrants to move there). Their farm is still owned by our family, and the little church and community hall his father built in 1890s are still in operation. I wish someone had thought to record my grandfather's memories, he saw so much in his 88 years!

Songs like; "He Ain't Heavy", "Bridge Over Troubled Waters", "Turn, Turn, Turn" and many others in that same vein represent that side of Rock&Roll that keeps me believing that "God Gave Rock And Roll To You" for a reason. You couldn’t escape their recording of “Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In”, and unlike so many records since, YOU DIDN’T WANT TO! The story Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr. tell about singing that mashup of those two songs IN JAPAN says it all. McCoo and Davis are 100% right when they talk about the magic and the power of that music. It retains that power to this day, but back then (the 1960’s) was pretty much the first time such things happened. Your interview left me completely blown away.

They took it to church all right! I loved their version and it actually brings me to tears a little because of its beautiful optimism and expansive spirituality. People really thought they’d experience “the mind’s true liberation” and now we’re fearful and suspicious in 2022. Anyway, it also showcased how Manhattan Transfer were funky and ethereal at the same time. I think they were called Sunshine Pop, which was apt. Beautiful people and interview.

My earliest memory of this song is from my time at a private school (k-4th grade ), run by hippies between 1970 - 74. I remember all the children playing tambourines, and other musical hand instruments, and singing as loud as we could. I still love this song, as much now as ever.

I used to go to Marilyn and Billy's house back in the 80's and play with her dog "Oro", a gift from her show "Solid Gold" (well, that was the excuse I used). She was every bit as kind and sweet and beautiful as she appeared, and one of the most down-to-Earth, unpretentious people you could ever meet. And at 69 years old, I still have a crush on her.

This song always reminds me of my oldest sister. It played in the background at her high school art show. Late 70’s or early seventies. I was probably a first grader. It’s the first time I remember cool music being played in public, much better than the boring stuff on the grocery store’s PA, lol. And Aquarius really matched with the pop art on display. Unreal, I've been listening to this song quite a bit the past week. I've always loved this song. The Joe Osborn bass line just drives that song forward and is the perfect counterpoint to the soaring vocals. What a treat to hear the story behind it from the people that made it happen. The story of the song must be one of the stronger bits of evidence pointing to a benevolent and loving God.

I grew up in the 99% white suburbs of Chicago. I was in 7th grade Chorus, and we did these two songs. We held a concert in the afternoon for the fellow Students, and then one in the evening for the parents and neighborhood. Prior to doing Aquarius/Let the sunshine in, we sang many up-beat and rocking songs, yet the audience all sat there like they were at a funeral! The Chorus teacher said, just before we sang this song said to us these people are dead, do something, anything to wake them up! So we sang out hearts and voices out during Aquarius, and Nothing zzzzzz. When sunshine started, we had one black family in the whole town, and the two sisters were in the chorus also. When sunshine started they got off of our little mini singing bleachers, and got in front of us on the stage and started to dance the most wild dance we all ever saw! It was like we were on Soul Train! When they got going the crowd went crazy yelling and screaming clapping and even started singing along. When we finished the song it was a standing ovation for like 10 minutes! They want us to do it again!
