This special originally aired April 28, 1966. It was sponsored by Singer Sewing Machines and NBC. It features Tony Bennett singing some of his favorite song selections as well as special guests, including Buddy Rich!
Our world is in loss of a star today, and our universe will never be the same--for Tony Bennett truly made our world ever more wonderful. But thankfully, we can still listen to his golden voice and classy tunes, and watch him perform throughout the end of time. May his beautiful soul now rest in peace.
Unbelievable! From late 40’s to late 50’s, in my opinion, will have been the height of mankind. Mesmerizing ability, control and tone. Music like this...IS life.
Wow! They don't make specials like that one any more. Tony, you have a terrific voice and boundless energy. We're all grateful you've made your mark in the music world and brought much beauty to us all.
I may have seen this special when it originally aired. My late wife and I had the pleasure of meeting Tony after his Wolf trap performance in the summer of 1978. He was just so cordial and relaxed and even had a robe on and very graciously signed an autograph for me and my impression was just a total likable guy!
Such an honor to be identified with you Tony; you leave no stone unturned in your dealing with a song; you give it all; hold nothing back; that breathless charm. A once in a lifetime phenomenon
Wow... Watching this for the first time. And I'm about to be 67. Became a Tony Bennett when my Mom kept on playing over and over and over again "I Left My Heart In S.F." And I got to meet him once too. Picture with him and me on my den wall. Thank you so much for posting. The miracle of RU-vid.
I broke into showbiz driving a Singer sewing machine van after giving a lift to a theatrical agent in 1953.move on to 63 working as compare at the Parkside club Nottingham I sang the shadow of you smile to Elisabeth Taylor and her then husband Richard Burton, years later had the pleasure to tell Tony Bennett while singing with Syd Lawrence.Coincidence or what? Roy Marsden.
My Mom is 96 and has loved Tony's music for as long as he has been preforming. My Mom is now battling dementia and I play his music for her all the time and it brings her peace.
Flawless TV Special. Not one single clunker and that's hard to do for an hour. Special accolades must go to the director and lighting designer, stupendous work.
Bennett sings "Who Can I Turn To?," "When You're Smiling," "Because of You" (with Bobby Hackett on trumpet), "Taking a Chance on Love," "The Shadow of Your Smile" (with flutist Paul Horn and his quintet), "Sing You Sinners," "If I Ruled the World," "Fascinating Rhythm" (with Buddy Rich on drums), "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," "Just in Time," "A Taste of Honey," "Once Upon a Time," "Keep Smiling at Trouble," "Blowing Through the Night" (with Milt Jackson on xylophone), "Firefly," "Quiet Nights, Quiet Stars," "The Moment of Truth" (with Candido on bongos), and "The Trolley Song." Includes commercials. (This program originally aired on ABC on October 26, 1966.)
Taped at the NBC facility in Brooklyn, NY, using many of the same technical and support people that would go on to produce "Saturday Night Live" at 30 Rockefeller Plaza a decade later.
Whenever I read the news or see video clips about the 1960s, my heart cuddles in the nostalgia of when I was in grade school in Hyde Park in Chicago, living on the 3rd floor of an apartment building across from the YMCA, visiting my dad's workplace at Illinois Inst. of Technology, and going to Tad's Steak house on weekends.
1966---------I was 19, headed to 20 on 9/24. it was a difficult year ; I was filled with anger, disappointment, & more questions than answers. I'd dropped out of college, so unsure of my place in the world, & in a moment, took off for here : LA, SoCal. it always seemed to be where I'd go. -------As for Mr Bennett, he was in '66, exactly 6 years away from recording MY all-time #1 by him : " Here's That Rainy Day " ., from his '72 album, " Tony, Wil Love ", by far, IMO, Mr Bennett's very finest album, recorded in London at Abbey Road, with the Late Robert Farnon, arranging, orchestrating, & producing this entire Masterwork. The album has Tony at his very, very best, with gorgeous music like " Street Of Dreams " , " Harlem Butterfly " , " maybe This Time " , " Lazy Day ", & " Remind Me " --------it's an album any lover of Mr Bennett's music needs to have. --------RIP, Tony. We miss you, but your music lives on, Forever, & Ever. ----------------------MJL< 76 y/o
Spouse and I got the great pleasure seeing and hearing Tony Bennett at the Long Beach arena in Southern California. Last time...Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga in Hollywood,California..Little did we know........last!
This video Of Tony Bennett just came up--It is fantastic. He has such a gift to sing --It is unbelievable. He looks to be in his forties. Always amazes me with his talent.
@Ian Salyer Also I read, somewhere, that Elvis was once asked,"How does it fell to be the greatest singer in the world?" To which he replied,"Go ask Roy Orbison."
@@vintagegoldenage That makes two. I know about them, though. Both...excellent. Any others? There are Bocelli and Groban but they are mediocre at best. There are others but very few.
He talks about true love. Which was old school but today there is no true love love is full of deceit and dishonesty these days there isn't true love but to try to find that true love you have to listen to Tony Bennett
Hola...me siento muy triste por la pérdida de este sr gran Cantante, carismático, soy uno más de sus tantos Fans..Descanse en Paz..mi apreciado Tony Bennett..saludos.
I was born in 1964, but I remember Tony very well from being a guest on other TV shows. This is just wonderful. You can't forget his permanent smile. My mother and I saw him in concert at a small-to-medium sized theater outside of Buffalo, NY. This was AFTER the award winning MTV unplugged album. It would have to be one of his last gigs that wasn't in a major venue. I am so glad I went. I'll never forget it.
tony nearing his vocal peak...his voice much much more beautiful as he matured....listen to his live 62 album...and while his voice is powerful..it lacks the warmth it will show in about 4-5 years from this show
Great Musicians all here, but two came directly from Heaven: Tony, of course, and the Amazing Milt Jackson. You can recognize him after just one or two notes on that Vibraharp.
The Ralph Burns Orchestra is sensational. No one else is "Buddy" but the orchestra drummer (I KNOW his face, but can't place his name) is absolutely world class!
