Arirang is the most well-known Korean folk song. It’s believed to be first sang over 600 years ago, and passed down from generation to generation. It embodies the spirit of the people of Korea for centuries. Arirang represents the suffering and tribulation (Arirang 'Hill') overcome as people and the nation. If we’re together as one holding hands, we can make it over the hill. Arirang Alone is a modern adaptation of the original song written in the hope of reunification of Koreas. It’s a song of hope and peace. It tells a fantasy of the Island of Dokdo floating in the East Sea all alone singing Arirang. If Dokdo sang Arirang, alone in the Eat Sea, would North and South reunite? Dokdo is in the central location from Mount Baekdu (in northern border of North Korea) and Mount Halla (in Jeju Island, South Korea). Let’s ride a boat together from Baekdu and Halla. When we dock our boats at Dokdo, we’ll witness a new dawn together. The songwriter’s parents had to leave two sons and a daughter in North Korea during the war. His father’s dying wish to him was “when Korea reunite, go find your older brothers and sister and tell them that their parents did not abandoned them”.
she manages to put all of that into this performance. you can feel it radiating through the screen, even if you don't understand what she's saying or what the lyrics refer to. i cried the first time i saw this performance and i still get teary eyed every time i see it.
My man on the right got the ENTIRE concept correct. Arirang is an imaginary promised land for us, a world of peace, freedom and unity. So "imagining" or "visualizing" your own vision through listening to that melody is the EXACT REACTION you are supposed to have. This man gave me chills with his explanation.
There are many amazing singers in the world, but nobody can sing like Sohyang❤️❤️ Arirang alone is a very old song with about 500 years, its like an unofficial Korean national anthem. Sohyang brought this song to another level, and this song even being used in Olympic ice skating theme song.
Beautiful reaction. This magical performance by Sohyang transfers the listener to a different place and time, where language is optional. This stage demonstrates what music is supposed to do. Arirang Alone is a traditional folk song Sohyang transformed to make it a dramatic epic with her arrangement. Some said it's cinematic. Your comments fully described the reason. Her voice and the dynamic of the song really paints a running landscape that takes you through the emotion from the history. Her BB5 jump in the song is absolutely epic. Enjoyed your video. Thanks.
Thanks for reacting to Sohyang. Some words of advice if you react to Sohyang: 1. Do not react to videos from MBC. Copyright issue. 2. If you react to songs from King Of Mask Singers, do not use RU-vid. React from vimeo with Eng Sub. Official videos in RU-vid are truncated for this competition. 3. If you react to "Where Are You", use vimeo. My favorite is Dear Love. It is about a woman whose unfaithful husband who left her for her friend. Despite that, she still loves him deeply and long for him. The song is beautiful as it captures the essence of the situation. You can hear the cries of a woman in pain. The wailings increase in intensity as the song progresses. When you think it is finished or Sohyang cannot possibly hit the high note showcasing "extreme pain", she did with perfection. My fave song of Sohyang.
Alone by Heart BTW Arirang means being true to self in some explainations but we really don't where it came from except it's been a Korean folk song for a long long time....

This song is considered the unofficial anthem of South Korea. Hence the “sing-along” and all the audience knowing the words. I think that’s why she starts and finishes quietly. I think it’s out of respect.
Please react to Park Kiyoung performing “ Spring Rain” or “ Wound” Sohyang best and closest friend is Park Kiyoung. They both have incredible voices. I prefer Park Kiyoung because her vibrato is a bit slower and more pleasing but there is a RU-vid video titled “ Park Kiyoung vs Shoyang” and you will notice how they are so evenly matched. There about the same age. Incredible voices both. Park Kiyoung’s “Nella Fantasia” ( click live version 5:08 duration best version ever!!!). will silence your mind and rip open your heart!!!!! Al

You don’t need to understand the meaning of this song. Because I’m Korean but I don’t understand correct message of this song also. However if you can feel the some emotion through this song, that’s enough.
I think the performance and arrangement are amazing, but I consider this version of Arirang to be a sort of cheap politicised and ingratiating one, because it was meant to rally the Koreans around the Dokdo issue. I believe the original version(s) was/were meant to help remember past failures, and promote a repentant lifestyle while steadfastly holding to the Bible's promises regarding "Ari", which symbolises Judah, which is epitomised by the Messiah; and Ariel, which is the ancient name for the holy mountain called Tsiyyon. If you listen to the North Korean version while learning some basic Hebrew, you can see that it has probably concatenated various Hebrew words - where (the end of) one word is the beginning of the next word - in order to communicate a coded message. You can hear the following concatenated Hebrew words in the North Korean version, which is probably close to the original version, except the last stanza, which has probably been added in order to propagandise: "shib" (meaning "ten", but in Hebrew, it means "seven", "perfection", "solemn oaths", "rest", etc.); "shibri", which is the masculine form of the word meaning "seven"; "radah" (meaning "enlarge" or "expand"); "chomot" (meaning "wall"); "azab" (meaning "repair" or "restore"); and "aseh" (meaing "make" or do"). I believe the word "Baal-byeong" is actually a word play on Baal-Peor, which was the altar some idolators made to Baal on their way out of Egypt to the promised land. So the song is a reminder of past moral failings; the promise YHVH made to Abraham in Genesis 22; the prophecies contained in Matthew 10, in which Yeshua says that his hearers will not have evangelised all the 10 lost "houses" (tribes) of Israel before the Messiah comes (back); and the promise of being restored to the promised land. The song actually says I have found that much of Korean vocabulary is derived from Akkadian, Hebrew, and Geez, and recent research has confirmed that there is much similarity between Korean and "Sumerian".
