TBH, personally I didn't really like her Bridge over Trouble Water performance, so I am glad this was your first intro to her. I also find her a hit or miss singer. BUT when she Hits, my god, top tier. This song still gives me shivers and I probably heard it 1000 times.

Korea is a country that has suffered countless hardships throughout its history, however the koreans never failed to lose heart and stubbornly fought through them all. Compared to the dangers that they were exposed to its amazing that it is still standing today, becoming the most recognized country during today's worldwide pandemic. Those historical emotions, both negative and positive, are all bound and contained into this song, Arirang. I wouldn't find it surprising if people from other countries felt emotional from this song even if they didn't know the historical background. That's just how much is suppressed within the words and the melody of this song.

"아리랑"은 한국의 전통 민요입니다. "Arirang" is a traditional Korean folk song. "홀로 아리랑"은 "아리랑"을 재해석한 곡입니다. "Arirang alone(Holo Arirang)" is a reinterpretation of "Arirang". "홀로 아리랑"에는 남과 북으로 분단된 한국의 아픔이 담겨 있습니다. "Arirang alone(Holo Arirang)" contains the pain of Korea divided into the South and the North. 작곡가 한돌의 아버지는 실향민이었습니다. The father of composer Handol was a displaced person by the Korean War. "홀로 아리랑"에는 독도에서 남과 북이 만날 수 있길 바라는 소망이 담겨 있습니다. I absolutely love that you cried. This song is the unofficial South Korean national anthem because the meaning of the song is both about the tiny island Dokdo but also about South Korea. This song truly embodies the love and passion South Koreans have for their beautiful country and even though you didn't know what it truly means, you could obviously feel the emotion and love for their beautiful nation.

소향님이 노래를 정말 가슴 저리게 잘 부르는것도 있지만.. 한국인으로써 일본에선 독도가 일제강점기때 지배했다고 자기들 땅이라고 우기고, 중국은 조선시대때 속국이였으니 아리랑을 문화재로 올리는것도 모자라 유네스코 등재까지 하려고 하는게 참 답답하고 속터져서 이노래를 들으면서 더 눈물이 났어요. 솔직히 중국이나 일본 두나라 모두 역사도 문화도 깊고 풍부한대 왜 자꾸 남의걸 넘보고 욕심내는지..

Arirang, Korea with a long history, was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on December 5, 2012. In the lyrics of this song, the East Sea and Dokdo appear, showing that it is the territory of Korea.

5:52 Mt. BAEKDU is in North Korea and Mt. HALLA is in South Korea. The South and the North cannot reach each other as of now. So this song A-RI-RANG represent the pain of diveded Korean between North and South and the yearning.

FYI There are a lot of version of "arirang" in Korea history. "arirang" is a word something kind of comfort for korean emotionally. Actually, it is hard to explain the meaning of "arirang" in a word simplely. And the "arirang alone" in this video is the song about" Dokdo" which is small island in east sea of Korea. This is located a little far away from Korea peninsula lonelily. In these day, Japan insists they own the Dokdo island(they call it Takeshima island) to get ocean resources by belonging Japanese government. 쪿빫읽쉙낈듧 넔넰는읿럱놁랡없짉 ㅋㅋㅋ

although there's a lot of great singer out there but for me she's the best in term of belting, technical and emotion....react to her more. My suggestion will be - 1. Bridge Over Trouble Water 2. You raise Me Up 3. Lean On Me and lasly the most difficult song she ever sang >> 4. Everyone All song are from the same tv program 'immortal Songs'

소향님은 독보적이죠.. 한곡의 노래지만 소향님이 부르면 소향님의 해석이 있고 많은 영상들이 머리속을 지나는것 같은.. 소리를 듣는데 머리속에 눈으로 보는것 같은 영상을 떠올리게 하는 가수는 정말 드문데 소향님이 부르면 대부분 영상이 떠 오르죠.. 외국분들이 소향님에 환호 하는것도 가사는 모르지만 떠오르는 영상이 있어서일겁니다 그리고 이 코치님 감성...ㄷㄷㄷㄷ

Besides the dazzling vocal skills demonstrated by So Hyang, what strikes me the most about the song is the storytelling and emotional resonance. So Hyang really tells a good story with her voice and brings the lyrics into life. The song has different layers of meaning to the Korean people, one is that it represents resistance to Japanese colonialism back in history, another is that it represents the wish for reunification of the two Koreas. Thus, So Hyang was taking the huge challenge to revamp a song that is so culturally meaningful to her people, and she did a fantastic job.

영어를 완벽하게 구사하지 못해서 전부는 알아듣지 못하지만 중간중간 들리는 단어들에 감탄하고 감동 받으셨다는 건 확실히 알겠네요~ 내 칭찬도 아닌데 괜스레 자랑스럽네 ㅎ

Honestly So Hyang is just such an amazing singer, she's worked so hard and makes her performances seem so effortless! She has great control and doesn't sound breathless like some people do at all! Absolutely beautiful!
