The lock on the stitch selector locks only to prevent it from going down. This is so you can quickly reverse stitch (lock stitch) & go back to your selected stitch length without looking. That said THANK YOU for this video! I fixed my bobbin problem on my 638 machine with your help.

Hi, I have repaired a lot of these machines. Your video is pretty good. Just wanted to give you some advice about the black piece that you use for the bobbin timing. When replacing it back in the machine if you put it in at an angle along that Groove that the arm fits into you will feel it slide under a spring which will keep that thing from doing the jumping up and down motion that you described. You can actually see the spring from the bottom of the machine and the unit that it slides into. It's really necessary to make sure that the arm that slides in there goes under that spring to hold that apparatus down. You can't count on the slide plate to do that on its own. You will know that it is oriented properly when you put it in there you can pull up on that unit and it will automatically bounce back down to the bobbin and hook assembly. you can feel the spring doing its job. If you don't feel that and it moves freely, you will need to pull it out and try again until it's oriented correctly.
@The13thSword
@The13thSword 5 лет назад
Thank you sir for taking the time to let us all know about the spring. That is a critical piece of info to know, & hopefully it will help anyone else who comes along. My problem with getting it adjusted correctly apparently wasn't that it wasn't under the spring, because it would do the "bounce back after pulling it up" as you describe. The problem was that it was so far out of adjustment it didn't have enough tension against the hook assembly. I assume someone previously tried to fix it & just didn't have the knowledge & gave up. Only good thing about that was I got a machine they thought was broken for $20 @ a yard sale. Now it works very well & has become my wife's favorite machine for bashing out long strings of straight stitching, super fast. A plus when you do quilt work like she does. :^) Thanks again for the info & your input, it is greatly appreciated.

You are most welcome, glad it helped you in some way. Agreed, the vintage machines are much better than the newer ones; they were actually designed & engineered to last & be serviced. The wife says that this Singer has some of the best stitch quality she's ever seen & that's it's super fast. The repair is still holding up fine so you should have no problems once you get everything "dialed in".

I was given a singer touch and sew 648 but the top drive gears are missing teeth on one gear that moves the bobbin around. Where can I get metal gears?
@The13thSword
@The13thSword 5 лет назад
@@monakayfischer5766 Unfortunately you cannot buy genuine Singer new all metal gears for this machine anymore; they just aren't offered by the company. If you are determined to have all metal replacement gears, they do sometimes show up on Ebay, from sellers that dismantle machines & then sell the parts. There are some gears & gear sets on Ebay listed as "new" but I am not sure of their quality or where they are made. The nylon capped gears & gear sets are available & will work just fine. They will also last just as long as the metal gears, if you keep them lubricated. I personally give them a light coating of automotive grease on the gear teeth every 6 to 12 months. Standard sewing machine oil will work fine as well & won't hurt the nylon. (BTW, "sewing machine oil" is just plain mineral oil, which is cheaper than oil packaged as "sewing machine oil", which is usually double the price! I use regular 3-in-1 oil). My best parts source is Sewing Parts Online. Here is the parts page for your machine: www.sewingpartsonline.com/singer-648-sewing-machine-parts.aspx?sort.price=desc&index=17 If you need a user's manual for your machine Singer has one online in PDF format for free: www.singer.com/search/support?lp=support&title=648 If you want a service manual they are available online from several sources, either as downloadable PDFs or in hard copy, usually $8 to $12. Just search Singer 648 Service Manual & you'll find them. There are also several available (printed form) on Ebay right now. Lastly, during the "Touch & Sew" era, Singer was in transition on the gear issue. Earlier Touch & Sew machines had all metal gears, later ones had the nylons. There are still plenty of 40 to 50 years old nylon-geared machines out there with the original gears that work fine, because they were serviced well & regularly. I would personally have no problem installing a new nylon gear or gears on any of these machines. I hope this has been of some help to you. Let me know if I can help you further.

Thank you so much for this video! My aunt gave me her old 1969 Singer (Model 648, Special Zig-Zag Touch & Sew), and the positioner arm (which the manual calls a "position bracket") jumped while I was winding a bobbin and the whole bobbin case jammed just like you described at 21:14. I was worried it was busted beyond repair and it's a huge relief to know that it's not a unique problem and it's also fixable! I ended up partially dismantling that portion of the machine and managed to fish out a broken needle which had probably gotten under the positioner and wedged it up.
@The13thSword
@The13thSword 5 лет назад
You are most welcome, I'm glad the vid helped. And good work getting it fixed yourself! Also glad that the problem was just the broken needle causing the arm to not work properly; fairly easy fix, ya just gotta have the info to know where to look & what to do. When I first tried running my machine "per-fix"& the "jumping" happened I thought it was going to be beyond my fixing it, downright scary! Since then I've found out that most sewing machines can be easily fixed with a little info & work. The only things I can't fix are the newer machines electronic control boards; I can only replace those. Once you got it clear & checked the adjustment on the arm I'm sure your machine is humming along well now. Good work! Let me know if I can help you with anything else. BTW if you need it, here is a link to a free User's manual for the Model 648: www.manualslib.com/manual/1050790/Singer-Touch-And-Sew-648.html#manual It's a complete scan & you can page through it online or download it by using the green button near the top of the page, so you can have it on your computer for reference. There is no free service manual available online (believe me, I looked!), but one is available as a PDF download for under $10: manualsoncd.com/product/singer-630-648-sewing-machine-service-manual/

Hello, Nice Score! Regarding your bobbin jumping, I think that the hook driver may need adjusting to the proper height? It might be too high or too low? I know that this is a very difficult adjustment as the Service Manual says that the Bobbin must be slightly above the bobbin case. 1/16 of an inch can make a big difference. I want to see your timing video. This a great machine.

I just picked one of these up yesterday. It's just like the one i used in home ec class way back when. I need some advice on that little 'target' button in the bobbin area that engages the bobbin for winding. It won't move. I'd try to force it a bit, but I don't remember what direction it should move in. Any advice?
@The13thSword
@The13thSword 4 года назад
It's always wise not to force parts to move on older sewing machines; they can be easy to break. What is usually the cause of that "target" button not wanting to move is an obstruction in the bobbin case area, usually built-up lint. It doesn't take too much of that to cause problems. The bobbin case needs to be removed to check for this, as lint can build up between the case and the round area it rides in. If you need instructions on this, I will include a link below to Singer Online where you can download & keep the User's Manual, which will tell you how to do this. The only other problem that could cause the lever to "freeze up" like that is lack of lubrication. As this model is over 50 years old now, we can't be sure how well it was (or was not) maintained. The pivot points of the lever mechanism could just be "frozen" due to lack of oiling over time, or old oil dried out & becoming a sticky "gum" that keeps parts from moving freely. I would seriously suggest that you do a complete cleaning and oiling of the machine first, to make sure there are no lint "jams" & all of the oiling points on it have the proper lube. This is also described in the manual below. I have rehabed & put back into working service several machines of this era, and some of them require several soakings of oil at certain points to get "frozen" parts loosened up again. if it's a case of old oil dried out and turned into "gum" causing this, I'd recommend using WD-40 at first, and soaking the pivot points well & letting them soak at least a few hours, if not overnight. Gently test the part after the soak to see if it wants to move. It could take several applications to get the part to freely move completely, but so far this technique has never failed to get frozen parts unstuck for me. WD-40 has Kerosene in it, which will "melt" any old dried out, gummed up oil residue. Once you get all parts loose & working, you can go back, wipe off any excess WD-40 and then use regular sewing machine oil on all the lube points, or regular 3-in-1 oil, which is what I prefer, your choice. I do have a LONG video up on doing just this on a sticky reverse lever on a Kenmore. I explain a lot about the oils & it is repetitive (took about 7 soakings(!) but wanted to show the process) so just fast forward thru if you need to. Video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1cxbAiUrC4s.html Singer Model 628 Manual link: www.singer.com/search/support?title=628 See page 57 onwards for info on removing bobbin case plus general cleaning/oiling info. See page 60 for bottom of machine diagram, oiling points on the levers for the bobbin winder button. If you need clarification or more info just let me know. Last word of advice; take your time with it & be patient. It's a quality machine & should come back to "normal" without much problem.

The13thSword thank you for the quick reply. I picked this machine up on marketplace yesterday, loving the mid century cabinet, and the model was a bonus. The person i bought it from isn't a sewer, and thought it was in great shape. It's really doggie right now, and this problem prevented me from winding a bobbin to even attempt to sew. I have a kenmore-another thrift store purchase, as is my serger. The machine I most loved I purchased in 1972 for $100 in cabinet from Montgomery Ward, and made by the Happy Sewing Machine Company of Japan. It was a workhorse for all those years. Circumstances had me part with Happy and keep Kenmore. Then, jeans, OMG-no way to adjust for presser foot pressure. But it was so much lighter than Happy! Any experience with a Happy Sewing Machine? It was loaded with feathers, and cams. I'm going take your advice and wait for a day when i can really take some time with it, cleaning it up. As it is, I have freed up the target lever, which on my deluxe zig zag touch and sew is in the lower left hand corner, and pushes to the left to pop the bobbin up, and it's more of a swivel on a post than a lever. Thank you again, especially for the encouragement on this old machine.
@The13thSword
@The13thSword 4 года назад
@@judywalter8541 You are most welcome & I'm glad to help where I can. Most of these old clean machines are usually in need of some detail cleaning, oiling & servicing, just due to infrequency of use. The positive side of that is that there are rarely any worn out parts that need replacing, and they almost always run like champs. Good job on getting the lever free'ed up, I figured it wouldn't take too much. Taking your time & giving the machine a complete cleaning & service is the way to go, great idea. The post World War 2 made Japanese machines (and those are a story unto themselves, historically) are almost always built to last, and are usually based on an old Singer design, most often the Model 99. I believe they may actually be better than the original Singers, as the Japanese often worked their parts to closer tolerances than the American built machines. That made them run even better & last longer. Happy Sewing Machine of Japan has been around since 1923. The models they made for Montgomery Ward fit into that post WW2 mold, and most of them are great working machines. Yes they are heavy, built with actual metal & built like tanks. :^D Happy are still in business and seem to sell machines that suspiciously look like Brother machines. I'd love to see you post up an update when you get around to servicing your machine.

I just got a model 626 and the mechanism that the bobbin casing sets in binds up and does not spin can you help me out>?
@The13thSword
@The13thSword 4 года назад
There are usually 3 things that cause this. 1. Most common is built-up lint in the bobbin case causing it to jam & not move. Remove the bobbin case & brush or blow out any & all lint you can see. 2. It could be the Position Bracket setting is wrong (as shown in the video). It is the black arm with the spring on it & there is a very small screw head that is turned to change it's position. See video for an explanation on how to set this. 3. Or your bobbin case could be worn or broken. Given the age of these machines it could very well be possible that the case is just too worn to work properly. You can't tell just how much one of these old machines was used, and some parts, like the bobbin case, do wear. Remove the bobbin case and check the underside edges for noticeable scratches, loss of chrome plating (these areas will be a dull gray in color) or even a groove worn into the metal. If the case has any of these it should be replaced. New Bobbin cases are still available from Singer, but I haven't seen any aftermarket ones. Here's a link: www.singeronline.com/626.html Beyond those 2 things it could be something mechanically wrong with the machine, but it would be hard for me to say without being able to see it. BTW, if you need an operators manual for this machine, here's a link to a free PDF copy online: www.manualslib.com/manual/940157/Singer-TouchAndsew-626.html

what do u do when bobbin doesn't move at all and thread take up lever raises too high hitting frame
@The13thSword
@The13thSword Год назад
I would inspect those parts as completely as I could. The bobbin not moving at all could be several things. There could be stuff in the bobbin case preventing it from spinning; bobbin case should be cleaned out. Old bobbin could be jammed in the case or the bobbin is damaged. Try a brand new bobbin & see if it works. If it still won't spin or move, it could be a drive problem. You have to look under the machine, check the gears** & make sure no set screws in the bobbin driveshaft are loose or missing. It's also possible that the bobbin drive mechanisms are frozen in place, due to lack of maintenance & lubrication. The thread take-up lever hitting the frame sounds like another set screw issue. The arm may not be set in the correct place. **Many of these machines came with nylon gears. The nylon break over time & use & if this happens, you again may have a drive problem. Replacement gears are available here: www.sewingpartsonline.com/singer-629-sewing-machine-parts.aspx?index=1 Here is a link to the service manual for your machine: www.manualslib.com/manual/562105/Singer-620.html#manual

I have a machine just like this. It is skipping stitches. I bought a new machine and hated it and went to my old one. Can you help me? I have put in a new needle, put in same thread on the top and bottom, setting the tension at between 3 and 5 for medium cotton fabric, rethread to make sure I did it properly. This just started happening. Any suggestions?
@The13thSword
@The13thSword 3 года назад
There can be a number of reason for skipped stitches, most of them easy fixes. I'll take these in order considering the info you have given. Please understand that this info is meant to be as complete as possible, and is no assumption about what knowledge you have yourself about your machine. Thread - You said you put in the same thread. Have you tried a different spool of thread? There can be quality differences in thread that can make this happen. How old is the thread? As thread ages it can lose some quality and cause skipped stitches. Try a brand new spool & see if it makes a difference. Note - I do not advise using any thread that is more than a few years old for this very reason. Are you sure the top thread is between the tension discs? Are you sure you are threading the machine correctly, and winding the bobbin correctly? If the bobbin thread is not wound tightly enough it can cause skipped stitches. The users manual shows how to do this. If you don't have a manual, you can get one at Sewing Parts Online for $10 (www.sewingpartsonline.com/instruction-manual-singer-628-and-638.aspx), or let me know your email address & I can send you a copy of the manual in PDF format that I have on file. Mechanical- There is another tension setting knob inside the head of the machine. This regulates the presser foot tension. If set to low (lower number) your fabric may not be feeding correctly, causing skipped stitches. You should be able to swing open the cover sideways to get to it. Make sure that the tension setting there is not too low. As a rule of thumb, the tension is correct when the foot is down, the feed dogs in the up position, and the fabric you are working with cannot be pulled through with a gentle tug. If you can pull it through that way, it needs more presser foot tension; adjust accordingly. Machine Timing - It may be possible that the bobbin hook timing is off (rare, unless the machine has been very heavily used and has wear or damaged/broken parts). You can double check the timing visually. Here is a section from the Service Manual on it: www.manualslib.com/manual/562105/Singer-620.html?page=8#manual Any problems beyond that will require a pro to look at it & fix it, but I have found that if you take your time and verify all of the above, the problem will get solved. Let me know what happens.

@The13thSword
@The13thSword 3 года назад
@@lindahanley3950 Glad to try to help out. If it does turn out to be a broken or worn part, it is usually the gears underneath that drive the bobbin. You can see these in diagrams on the same page as the "timing the hook" instructions, page 8, and also on page 9. Singer started using nylon gears on these machines instead of the old all metal gears, so they would run quieter. However after 40 to 50 years+ the nylon can get brittle and lose chunks of teeth New gears are still available for the machines. One other thing I forgot to mention. There is a black spring clip that holds the bobbin case in a very precise way. You can see this part on page 8 of the service manual ("timing the hook"). This item requires a specific adjustment, but it is NOT mentioned at all in the service manual. Fortunately, here is a great video from Singer themselves about how it can be adjusted correctly: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z4ruDbTuVTY.html This turned out to be the issue on my machine, with the bobbin case jumping up and jamming, because the adjustment was too loose. Yours may be too tight, and occasionally not allowing the bobbin thread to pass and catch the top thread, resulting in a skipped stitch. The set screw on mine was run all the way in and frozen tight, apparently from someone else thinking it was the actual adjusting screw. I had to use an impact screwdriver to get it loose, and luckily did not mess up the slot in it. Just be careful when trying to loosen this set screw, and use a screwdriver that fits the slot as precisely as possible (correct size of blade for slot).
