Whitney’s version is by far the best performance!!! Whitney demonstrated a masterful use of technique in all her registers from her chest registers to head voice. She can also effortlessly switch between registers seamlessly. Her voice can belt clear and booming and then pull back and be light and velvety smooth. Such masterful versatility!! Her tone, in all her registers, is crystal clear, sweet like honey and gorgeous!! Her phrasing, diction, and delivery is bar none the best. Whitney was poised and graceful in her delivery and stage presence.

Whitney is one of the rare singers, if not the only one, who could've taken an over 100 years old song and put it at the top of the musical charts.

She made such a powerful performance look easy. Of course this was during the Gulf War, I was stationed in Japan. Even before the internet, word spread of this so we had to wait to actually see and hear it. Definitely worth the wait. The best Anthem performance EVER 💗🙏

While her singing has brought me to tears a gazillion times throughout the years, it also brings such downright unadulterated JOY. It's funny you mention the game because this was the infamous Buffalo Bills PK Scott Norwood missing a 47-YD FG wide right on the final play of the game, giving the New York Giants a 20-19 victory (closest margin of victory in Super Bowl history). 29 days later, I would start my career in the US Navy (I was 19 years old at the time of this), going to boot camp. Whitney was my all-time favorite artist and I was the one and ONLY Whitney fan and I was attending a party, all guys, some playing poker, some smoking cigars and not one other person besides me before she started singing. BUT when she sang that first note, the entire room got quiet and everyone's attention went to the TV screen. I saw these big, burly "macho" men who I never before seen get emotional, welling up with tears in their eyes!
No one and I mean no one in this lifetime or the next would there be anyone who will sing this rendition like Whitney Houston did. She hit this so far out the ballpark that in this 2022 it still hasn't come down as yet, and it never will. Whitney did this justice and no one once again will ever sing it like she did. Class act from a phenomenal woman. May she continue to rest in peace. She's truly missed

It kind of ruined most if not all halftime shows that came after it, because as you said it can't be topped. I was 12 when this Super Bowl happened and my parents were having a neighborhood party. When Whitney Houston sang this, there wasn't a dry eye in the house.
It was the Giants and Buffalo Bills 1991. I remember watching the Super Bowl 1991. Frank Gifford .. the announcer said it was the most electric moment in sports that he can recall. Too cute in her track suit , Whitney Houston felt loved ❤We miss her.

I do remember this very well. It was awesome, but I was actually at a big Super Bowl party at a Las Vegas hotel and could barely hear it. Of course, I've seen it numerous times since then. But in all honesty, I always preferred Marvin Gaye's amazingly soulful version from the NBA All-Star Game. Also, I know you're a Pentatonix fan. You should check out Kirstie's solo version from a Kentucky basketball game. Just her singing a cappella...and it's marvelous!
