Singin' in the Rain - Moses supposes. 49mb wmv, 320 x 240. 1500kbps - 4min 17sec long. Used Movie Maker in Windows 7 - easy and fast. Another terrific dance number from Gene Kelly and Donald O'Conner.
I'm so glad I finally remembered some of the lyrics to this song, because googling "two gay men taunt a speech therapist with tap-dancing" wasn't getting me anywhere
Ah the good ol' days when two young men could be randomly overcome with the power of dance and harass a pronunciation specialist in his own office without question.
Ah! The good ole days. And if the two young men were Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor I'd let them and not complain.I wonder how many takes it took for this scene?
OK, I love Gene Kelly, but this whole movie would be nothing without Donald O'Connor. He basically does everything, finds the girl, saves the movie, comes up with a new title, and basically kicks ass. I would have gone with him and forget Don Lockwood if I was Kathy!
Agreed! Not to take anything away from Gene Kelly's incredible talent, but Donald O'Connor was SO underrated! From this film alone, there's THIS number, and of course his performance in the absolutely brilliant and hysterical, "Make Em' Laugh!"
I loved dance from a young age, and even though my parents didn't let me watch much tv and we didn't watch movies, they made sure I saw this when I was young. I was absolutely entranced. I don't think I was that interested in the "romance" part until I got a little older lol, but I just LOVED the movie and will until the day I die.
I always have thought the same thing I hate it when movies have an unnecessary conflict between the main character and his/her best friend when they are both characters that we really like
@@marmarclassic3636 Kelly was a perfectionist, he worked tirelessly on every thing he did and wanted his teammates to do the same. Don't forget he was not just an actor on this, but the choreographer and co-director as well. We can not begin to imagine the pressure he must have been under. Donald O'Connor admired Kelly and was very eager to learn whatever Gene had to offer. Kelly was a team player, he had no problem aknowledging other people's talent, he perfectly knew what he could do and what others did better and he had no shame admitting it. Yes, he was demanding indeed. He was tough to work with because he wouldn't call it a day unless he was absolutely sure the people he supervised gave everything they had to give. Both O'Connor and Reynolds were thankful for this and what they learned with Gene, about his craft, and about themselves.
After all of these years, this is still one of the best choreographed and danced scenes I have ever seen. Seriously the chemistry and timing these guys have is just incredible. They almost look like a single person dancing at some points they are so in-sync with each other!
This was so smooth... O'Connor and Kelly had great Chemistry. Donald said he learned from Kelly a lot about economically utilizing his lower body while dancing, and in this routine it shows.
Donald O'Connor plays Cosmo in the movie but Gene Kelly plays Donald or Don in the movie. I think that Cosmo's better too, and i'm pretty sure thats what Emerald Ryder was saying- confusing haha
I think hands down Donald O'Connor takes the cake from both Gene Kelley and Fred Astaire. Love Fred and Donald, not so much a fan of Gene's style. He's still amazing, but I prefer the other two.
***** Well... true but not completely accurate. This is not filmed in one take... there are many cuts and the audio we hear is not the audio from the video recording but dubbed. Just because digital editing was not available, that does not mean that "video editing" was not available and not done. Film can be cut, spliced, etc etc. Some of the earliest video footage available is of people doing illusions of appearing and disappearing etc... They didn't have a means of electronically manipulating the images, but that doesn't mean people really vanished. ;-) That aside... yes absolutely two great and talented people doing amazing things truly in sync visually.
Gavin Morris Donald and Debbie were the ones who really had to work at it. Donald had some, but not a lot of dance training prior to this movie. Debbie had literally none. Gene on the other hand... yes, he had to practice and work at it, but he had something inside of him that just made him amazing on the dance floor and dancing in general. The way he moves is so smooth and fluid and he has such a swagger about himself, a confidence. Just watch in this video. Donald knows what he's doing but every now and again he looks down at his feet to make sure he's doing it right and he always seems to be thinking about the next step. Just watch this once and watch only Donald. Then watch it again and watch only Gene. You'll notice he gets to a point in almost any fast dance he's doing where he throws his head back and has this little smirk on his face, that's when he does his best work. He doesn't think about the next step, it's just sort of natural to him.
Hunter Mirr Donald was a tremendous dancer BEFORE this movie...see his Universal movies and his fabulous numbers....Kelly insisted on him for the role...he wanted a terrific dancer...only someone of Donald's ability could have done this number with Kelly...iin this number, Kelly said he wanted to incorporate things that Donald was so known for...Donald had tremendous athleticism. .Donald is considered one of the best dancers EVER! And, he was a terrific comedian, wonderful singer, serious actor...musician, etc... one of THE greatest and beloved talents. Make em laugh was choreographed by him - brilliant, as Kelly said. See his fabulous romantic dances with Vera Ellen in Call Me Madam and his ones with Mitzi Gaynor in Anything Goes (Bing Crosby, too...Donald made ehis first movie with Bing at age 12...he was a performer all his life...starting as a child in vaudeville, with his family...he was a teen idol in the 40's...really wonderful movies with great dancing.)..and, so many other movies of his. Debbie Reynolds was the one who had the difficult time, as she was not a dancer...she said it was daunting dancing with Donald and Kelly who were both amazing dancers.
I’m pretty sure they probably only ever wear tap shoes anywhere just in case they get the opportunity to break out into song and dance. You gotta come prepared!
I think, deep down, everybody has a hankering to just bust out and do this to someone. XD Imagine a classroom full of students doing this to a teacher.
I'm like 85% sure I could get my two theater boys to do this. I'd also like to drag them into Good Morning with me. I think Isaac would be down for it, and if Nathan isn't, I can always play Cosmo.
This was so smooth... O'Connor and Kelly had great Chemistry. Donald said he learned from Kelly a lot about economically utilizing his lower body while dancing, and in this routine it shows. You can see them looking at one another like, "Yeah, we're killin' it!!!!"... They sure did.
agree with you, wm ~ i read that choreographers in their day didn't like kelly's unconventional style, & thought he'd never make it as a dancer🕺🏽 i've never seen a better duo than o'connor & kelly, myself❕
+Katrina Bailey Without a doubt one of THE most brilliant song and dance men, EVER, was Donald O' Connor! I'm an actor and singer myself, and whenever I would do a musical I would watch this number (mainly to watch HIM!) and "Make Em' Laugh" to get revved up and inspired!
+belledejour15 I respectfully disagree! Mr. O'Connor OOZES with attitude, spunk and enthusiasm. Gene Kelly was incredible, but Donald O'Connor was BEYOND amazing!! Just my own opinion...
My third-grade teacher used to break into song and tap dance during class. The vice principal actually came into class once because he got a report that we were having "too much fun".
I'm so glad a few teachers still do things like that. My theater teacher would break into song during class (though he was a little too stiff for dance), and it wasn't uncommon for our entire lesson during the musical theater elective to be conveyed through an infamous Bob Song Break.
One of the most magnificent dances ever put to film, and the diction coach’s reactions are priceless, especially when they stop him from moving away from the curtains!
They're just SO in time, it's incredible. Even if the taps were dubbed in afterwards their leg angles almost completely match all the way through. From 2:57 it's stunning - that 2nd clap sounded like one person until I watched it again. I can't get over it.
I remember watching this the first time and crying, of how touched I was by their dance moves. Specially Donald O Conner, who is my favorite dancer and character. Perfect movie.
Just watched on Christmas day.Never get tired of it. This scene with these two genius's is just class the timing is just awesome and with Debbie in the movie too it cant get any better.
Of all the ways to be introduced to this movie, a random Japanese animation about a cute little ghost and possessed dancing shoes was among the least expected... :-D
Hank Elliott I love both La la land and Singing in the rain. I prefer singing in the rain but props to La la land for bringing back the beautiful atmosphere that Singing in the rain contained.
They do hold long shots in dance scenes and enough full body shots to see what the dancers are doing....but it's never longer than 10 seconds in the group performances and then the camera instantly goes to the next person. We get only a glimpse of what they can do, but in the musicals of the 30s and 40s and 50s, when someone on their payroll could dance they let the audience know that. The duet numbers were nice, and they danced as well as I probably could (I'm under no illusions of my dancing skills) but for the most part, the choreography of La La Land was a bit simplistic (and yes, I know that the point of it was to portray ordinary, flawed, everyday people....but it's just not the same, especially when you remember the work and effort the other dancers put into their craft for years ie the behind the scenes story of 3 numbers from this movie).
I totally agree. Musicals must be done by dancers or singer who can also act and not by actors who can sing or dance. And a great musical must also have a great choreography, so La La Land is nothing compared to Singin' in the rain and other musicals from the gold era.
Donald O’Connor deserved way more recognition and fame than he ended up getting. Either way this movie stands the test of time, and the pure athleticism and talent of both of these men is incredible.
Cosmo had such impish charm, it's absolutely delicious. Donald played it to perfection. For me the icing on the cake of this scene is the wonderful, brassy 50's jazz style of the music.
Love everything about this movie. Gene Kelly was so precise and athletic in these numbers while Donald O’Connor was more lanky and lithe. It was a very special combination that I could watch everyday on repeat.
The moves themselves are quite simple but its when you put them together and to that timing , complete with this flawless execution that it becomes one of the most amazing dances ever!! I just wish more of this kind of movie was made!!
Watching in 2022, post covid blues , this is lifting my spirits . How is it possible Donald Oconnor had no formal training and danced like this. Genius dance routine
The best part of this whole number is that it's a non-sequitur. Never have I been so enthralled by a musical number which accomplishes nothing except be spectacular. Cats eat your heart out.
I’m learning this dance in my tap class and I couldn’t be happier 🥺🥺🥺❤️❤️❤️ Gene Kelly is my hero and the reason I started taking dance. Learning what he choreographed is just an incredible experience! 💕
My kids and I got to know Gene Kelly. He was wonderful to my children-and all kids actually. He welcomed my kids’ questions and they asked him why they couldn’t see any taps on the bottoms of his shoes. He explained that he and Mr. O’Connor danced the scene without taps and then danced it all over again off camera with taps so the sound could be recorded. (My kids met Donald O’Connor as well and asked if he could make a funny face and he did. Sweet man.)
Can't get over how these 2 men could dance like that on that little desk top without stepping on each other or knocking the other over with such rapid movements! Amazing!
Broadway performers can sing, act and dance but their names won't draw a crowd. So they get A list celebrities and auto tune them to make ticket sales.
Because they fell out of favor around the 1960s with the general audience, so they didnt need actors who could also sing and dance anymore, thereby leading to it being almost impossible to make a big name musical if they wanted to since they werent scouting this kind of talent anymore. I hate the general audience that let the movie musical fall by the wayside.
I have to have to say, while both of these men are wonderful dancers, I do believe that Donald O'Conner is technically a better dancer; however, Gene Kelly has a lot of swag and attitude that is a joy to watch.
And he was the greatest comedian of all. But he wasn't Kelly - he didn't have his looks, his sex appeal and his athletic dance style. But they were a perfect match as duo - hero and sidekick.
I can't get this song out of my head; I sing it around the house all day long. I simply cannot watch this scene enough; twice a day is a minimum. This is, hands down, my favorite (duo-dance) movie scene of all time. (Of course my favorite solo dance number is the title number from this movie.) Gene was the penultimate dancer; he could do it all. But his particular style is just so appealing! He was a master and perfectionist for sure, but all the while maintaining that boyish charm and love of life. It's just impossible, at least for me, to watch him dance without having a smile.on my face. Love, love, love Gene Kelly!! Donald O'Connor was the perfect co-star for this movie. He's cute, funny and quite a gifted dancer in his own right.
God imagine the diction coach going home and having to tell his wife what happened at work today. How do you even begin to describe it? "Well I was doing the job I was hired to do with the biggest star in Hollywood until his rude friend came in and started insulting me. Then the two broke out into song and perfectly choreographed dance while manhandling me and made bedlam of my office."
Watching it 2020, can connect with characters.. The entire movie and its actors sheer class apart.. Hats off to all those involved in creating this master piece 🙏
What Frank Sinatra said in "That's Entertainment!" about Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell dancing to "Begin The Beguine" works here too: "You know, you can wait around and hope. But you'll never see the likes of this ever again."
Just watched on Christmas day.Never get tired of it. This scene with these two genius's is just class the timing is just awesome and with Debbie in the movie too it cant get any better.
I grew up watching this movie and this dance scene is still one of best ever done on screen. These guys were fantastic and pure talent together. We could use some more of this in this world again. Maybe it wouldn’t be the big seller at the movies but boy it would it be fun.
They are both so amazing! But Gene Kelly does look like hes working harder. Donald O'Connor is just so smooth! One of the best musical numbers of all time IMO
"Moses supposes", incroyable l'articulation tout en chantant et dansant. Moi, même avec les années de pratique théâtrale, j'avais encore du mal à dire : Les chaussettes de l'archiduchesse..." alors le chanter... mdr. GENE, JE T'AIME !!! Tu es le dieu de la danse avec ton pote Donald.
