I don't do a lot of videos that extend into the farther upper reaches of the individual fachs, but here's one to work on.
The first two exercises are excellent for sustained airflow, continuity of vowel sound and matching of resonance form one vowel to the next.
The third and fourth patterns extend a significant amount. The fourth pattern in particular, with the trill, is excellent for learning to retain engagement through the line. As I mention in the video, once you have that exercises sorted out by using the lip trill, rewind a bit and try it with a vowel of your choosing.
Enjoy!

This warm up helped so much, because I usually sing in my high range and I had never found a warm up that allowed me to go to rehearsal already loose for high notes. Thank you so much!

I like how you trick my mind in to singing high notes without anticipating the high notes. It is making my voice feel more free and it removed the tight choking reflex in me once I reach above the 2nd Passaggio.Im loving the thrill exercise as it feels like my throat is opening instead of choking. However my sound color above the G is like that of a Pavarotti or Opera sounding but it sounded lighter instead of fuller and louder... or it somehow lacks power...Its not breathy, but it feels like only half of my throat is working and my sound volume is decreasing. My air release is lesser than when it was below G. The area at the back of my nose or sinuses and the area above my soft palate is like vibrating that I got a little of post nasal drip after vocalizing the thrill above the 2nd passagio.... I haven't felt this before but I guess its my allergy thats causing the post nasal drip but the lip thrill is like a buzz in my pharyngeal area. Is the light buzz normal?
@JeffRolka
@JeffRolka 7 лет назад
Awesome! The buzzing is probably normal, and sometimes reported when the pharynx is involved when it hasn't necessarily been in the past. Keep practicing and keep me informed as to how things are going for you. All the best, Jeff
@AngelShadowsongWarren
@AngelShadowsongWarren 7 лет назад
Hi Master Jeff, I've been practicing this exercise as often as I could every other day. I started noticing the improvement in my volume leveling on the notes above the passagio with the exception on the last 2 notes of the scale. I tend to lose my hold on the last 2 notes of the scale. I can reach it if i push it, but it feels like my vocal chords are not yet aligned or adducting in that area. As I practiced this I noticed my vibrato on the lower notes up to A above the passaggio are getting better and consistent. I was just wondering if there is a different onset technique that you do on the notes above A. My vowels specially O and U tend to hold me back as I slide from notes B to c#/d Regards and more power, Angel

Thank you so much for this video, this was exactly what I needed, since I am a lady tenor :) My chest voice range is A2 through F5, and for the lack of male tenors and my using falsetto to reach some "normal" female tones like G5 or H5, my conductor put me in tenor section, and now I'll always be prepared for rehearsals and concerts, thanks to this video! Hey Jeff thanks a lot for your videos! I'm technically a baritone and I've been doing your baritone warm ups quite often and they work very well. However, I've recently started doing your Tenor warm ups and exercises as a follow up. Point is I can quite comfortably do all the extended baritone and tenor range on the exercises. Would you recommend I stick with one of them only? Or should I continue to do both to "unlock" my range? Thank you!

Do you have a vocal warm up or practice that helps remove interference (the stringy, unpleasant sound in your voice when you want it to be clear and crisp)?
@JeffRolka
@JeffRolka 6 лет назад
If you mean mucous or phlegm, really any vocalization can help with that. In fact, vocalizing is the recommended means by which to remove it, rather than clearing your throat or coughing. Staying hydrated will also help. The thing with mucous is that it can be really annoying and disconcerting, but it is usually harmless. You might want to try one of the gentle warm ups to manage frustration and then move on to a more standard full range warm up. Perhaps one of these: ru-vid.com/group/PL2mQP7sE6PHgeixPDzzJHElQpUDoHwvK6 Best! Jeff Shopping at Amazon? Use this link and a small portion of your purchase will be donated to the channel. Could you give us a video on how to belt? I want to eliminate strain and mix with head voice, but have it be just as powerful.
@JeffRolka
@JeffRolka 7 лет назад
Sure, though what you're saying in your comment, depending on your definition of 'belting' may have conflicts. How have defined 'belting' in the past? There are several schools of thought on this. For my part, I define belting as: entering the call of the voice; prohibiting the cricothyroid muscles from engaging in the phonation process and forcing the thyroarytenoid dominant singing voice higher than it's natural transition point. By that definition, there is no 'mix with head voice' as the cricothyroid dominant singing voice (head voice) is delayed. If what you're wanting is to have more power on higher notes, you are better served by focusing on a smooth transition through the secondo passaggio such that the resonance of your voice is maintained. I demonstrate this in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1WetqFLkcuk.html Let me know what you think! Best! Jeff

Only ting better would have been less breaks, every time I do this as I am getting a feel to properly to find my placement in the higher registers there is a break and totally throws me off

Do you mean me stopping on the piano? If so, those are intentional, but I'd be interested to hear more about your experience. Best, Jeff

Yeah I mean when you take a quick break in the exercise to allow some to take an extra breath, I feel it happens a bit too frequently . I find i tend to get a good fee for placement and how it feels to properly engage and deliver airflow for the higher registers but as I hone in on the feeling there is a break and it snaps me out of the zone. Always happens , even though I know the break is coming, knocks me out of the concentration a bit, instead of feeling it in the zone, knocks me out of it . BUT, it’s an awesome exercise, so I still come back. Thanks 👍🏽

Why is this called extended range?
@JeffRolka
@JeffRolka 7 лет назад
Because the vast majority of the videos I have done for the channel focus primarily on the transition around the secondo passaggio and this one goes beyond the next registration event in each of the fachs. It makes it easy to identify the range of any given video (as it relates to the fach in the video.) General warm up videos stay just below the secondo passaggio. If in the title it says, 'full range,' then it will go above the secondo passaggio but not to the next registration event. Extended range covers that registration event as well as the secondo passaggio. Thanks! Jeff

I think, I'm having a stroke every time someone trying to sneak to my room while I'm warming up my voice.

Seriously. Me too. If I'm practicing and someone knocks or opens the door I nearly go through the roof for fright! The janitors at University used to do that to me all the time. Every day at midnight there would be a knock on my practice room door that would scare me out of my mind. Best, Jeff

What if you are bari-tenor????

Try to narrow down the location of your secondo passaggio as much as possible. Knowing that will make it easier to decide which videos to use. Best! Jeff

I my choir the high baritones (like me?) are extending the chest voice up into the high notes e and f which sound then masculine and even brilliant while the tenors already are in head voice with a middle b or even a bit lower and they lack that volume on the high notes. It's strange because I would expect that rather the high voices would extend the chest voice much higher. But that's often what is normal in choirs. Perhaps "Italian tenors " are not wanted in little choirs for they would be too loud. But it makes that those high brilliant baritones can be confused about their fach.
